How to frame a football shirt

And as such, it would be a crime to stash it away in your closet where it will go unseen and unnoticed. These items are statement pieces that clearly deserve to be framed with care and displayed proudly on your wall.
It is possible to frame a football shirt yourself, but it is far better to hire a professional framing company to do the work on your behalf. Homemade frames can be very difficult without the know-how and tools to create a beautifully finished frame – not a risk to take with such a prized possession. Here at SohoFrames we developed our own way of framing football shirts, mainly because we didn’t really like the way most people do it. This usually involves slipping a piece of cardboard inside the shirt and holding everything in place with double-sided tape, glue, or staples. This is not for us.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how we frame a football shirt:
Step 1: Steam the soccer jersey
We steam the soccer jersey before framing to remove the creases and carefully avoid handwritten signatures. Although most of the time we just steam them stretched out, you can style them any way you wish – with your arms crossed, for example.
Step 2: Clamp on a passepartout
The next step is to mount the shirt on a sheet of conservation matboard. To ensure it holds its shape we use t-tags to hold the shirt in place. These are fine plastic stitches, similar to those used to sew together a new pair of socks.
Step 3: Design the window mount
When we are happy with the assembly and everything is in the right position, the forearm folds are neat and evenly spaced, we photograph the shirt from above. This photo is then used to create a window design in the exact shape of the shirt, sometimes with a few subtle design embellishments. This will cover the edges of the shirt, hide any visible seams and maintain a gap between the jersey and the glass as this allows moisture to collect which can cause mold.
Our methods are flexible depending on the item. For example, we can carefully sew garments like rugby shirts into shape without a window mount. This is because their collars are too thick compared to the rest of the jersey, meaning they can’t lay flat for the mount to seal the edges, unlike football shirts which typically have collarless crew necks. For thicker clothes like this, we instead opt to fold them a bit with crossed sleeves and use a spacer to keep them off the glass.
Step 4: Cut and install window mount
The custom matboard is then cut from another matboard sheet on our CNC matboard cutting machine. This process often requires several test cuts, which allow us to adjust the design so that the finished mount fits perfectly over the shirt. Once the cutting is complete, the mount is placed over the shirt, assembled and sealed between the glass and backing plate.
Step 5: Select the frame
Depending on your taste, different frames can be attached to the piece. Our methods are suitable for both flat and deep box frames, although we may recommend the latter if the shirt is particularly thick. Choosing a color the same color as your shirt can look extra striking as long as that hue doesn’t clash with your home’s decor. We can custom spray frames in almost any color.
Alongside your framed soccer jersey, you may also want to incorporate related items such as: B. engraved metal plaques or photos. Many customers emphasize the importance of the jersey by including a picture of it being worn by the player during a match.
