Crawlspace Jacks consist of 4 basic parts:

Top Plate (attaches to the joist with screws or nails) Spindle with a metal threaded rod (houses in the 3.5″ tube) Tube (which houses the threaded rod) Bottom Plate (fixed to the post)

The head plate and load are lowered or raised via a nut welded to the spindle/threaded rod. The nut is turned manually with a wrench until the desired height is reached.

These are easily adjustable and can even be adjusted by the homeowner a year or two after installation if additional settlement/compaction needs to be addressed.

We remove any loose dirt that could hinder our work. We need clearance, Clarence. In order for us to even take on a crawlspace jack installation project, we need 2 feet of clearance to ensure we have enough room to move.

We prepare the pad base by digging a hole that is 18 inches by 18 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

We fill and compact the excavation with gravel and level it so that we can place the slab directly under the girder.

The gravel distributes the weight evenly in the ground. The pads themselves are a square foot – ergo, without the gravel, the load would be concentrated in a square foot of dirt.

We measure the distance between the prefab slab and the joist and cut the 3.5 inch pipe.

We assemble all the parts of the Crawlspace jack and place the whole jack securely on the pad.

We install all Crawlspace jacks in front of the lift. The bushings are typically spaced 6 feet apart and at joist connections. It is imperative to support the main joints so that both sides of the beam have support and are level – no step up or down.

During the hoisting, we raise each jack a little at a time to ensure that no single jack is carrying the majority of the lift’s load. There are usually two workers in the crawl space manually tightening the crawl space wagons, while a third worker is in the house monitoring the floor levels with a ziplevel.

It’s important to note that digging and setting up alone easily accounts for 80% of the project time. Crawl spaces are small and difficult to maneuver. The confined space increases the time for digging, equipment transport and the leveling process.

Occasionally, compression piers and/or spiral piers may need to be used to address foundation settlement before the jacks can be installed. In addition, parts of the rotten beam sometimes have to be replaced.

09 of 10 Shake Your Car Gently shake the vehicle to confirm it is safe. Make sure all jack stands are flat on the ground and will not move when you shake the car. A tilted jack can collapse because it is not designed to hold a load at an angle. Once your car passed the shake test, you can safely work on your car.
