But does a water dispenser mean a fridge needs a water pipe? We asked home appliance experts what you need to know.

Not all refrigerators require a water line. If your fridge doesn’t have a water/ice dispenser or doesn’t want to use one, you don’t need a water line. You can also find refrigerators that dispense water from a tank and similarly require no plumbing.

However, if you want a standard plumbed ice maker, then your refrigerator will need a water line.

Read on, and we’ll cover all of these options in detail. We explain some reasons people don’t plug in their water and ice dispensers and why your fridge might not need a water line. Does a fridge need a water pipe?

While water and ice dispensers are becoming more popular, some still prefer not to have them. If you don’t run a water/ice dispenser, your refrigerator doesn’t need a water line.

Fridges without a dispenser are not only cheaper, they also save you the hassle of another broken part. Because a refrigerator without an ice dispenser will never bother asking yourself, “Why isn’t my ice dispenser working?” If you don’t need or use the part, then why have it in the first place?

These parts also come with some inconveniences. They take up space in the door and make less room for groceries. Models with dispensers may not have doors that are easily reversed, meaning you cannot change the door hinge to suit your kitchen layout in the future. And a water pipe can lead to water leaks and subsequent water damage.

How much does it cost to install a water line for a refrigerator?

You can expect it to cost anywhere from $70 to $130 to install a water line for a refrigerator. However, if your old fridge already had a working ice maker, you might be able to skip that expense. It is a one time cost based on hiring a plumber.

Once you’ve installed an adequate plumbing line, swapping out an old hose for a new one can usually be a relatively easy task. A new hose costs between $15 and $30.

How to install a refrigerator water pipe yourself

If you do not want to hire a plumber, it is possible to install the water pipe yourself. This project is for the intermediate DIYer – if you’re having trouble using a screwdriver, it probably isn’t for you.

Check the fridge and kitchen first to make sure there isn’t already an accessible water line somewhere. If you haven’t lived in the house for a long time, it’s possible that an old refrigerator has already been installed by the previous owners. If you already have a water pipe, save yourself some work! It can extend up from the wall or from the floor.

If there is no water pipe, you need to find the nearest water source. It’s probably whatever is feeding your sink or dishwasher. Find the nearest connection on a vertical water pipe. Record the shortest and easiest path the water has to travel to reach the refrigerator.

You’ll need to add 6-8 feet to this, and that extra length will curl up behind the fridge. This gives extra wiggle room so you can move the fridge around if needed without having to pull out the cord.

Once you have the correct length of hose, turn off the water supply and run the faucet to drain the pipes. You then add a valve or fitting to connect the hose to the pipe. After routing the hose along the path to the fridge, fastening it every few feet, use a wrench to tighten it at both connectors.

When it’s connected and secure, run the line to flush it out. Discard the first few gallons from the water cooler and the first few batches of ice.

Do all refrigerators with ice makers require installation?

Most refrigerators with ice makers require a water line—but not all. There is another option, which is commonly called a non-water connected refrigerator. These have a storage tank in the fridge or freezer which then dispenses cold water or ice. While you don’t have to worry about the cost and hassle of installing it, you do need to top up the tank yourself on a regular basis.

An advantage of a fridge without a water connection is that you have more freedom in placement. You don’t have to choose a place for the fridge based on the available plumbing. You can place it where it works best for your layout.

Some disadvantages besides refilling the tank manually are:

Do new refrigerators have a water pipe?

Most new refrigerators do not have a water line. You need to buy a hose for installation. Metal hoses for a refrigerator have a standard 1/4 inch connection and are available in different lengths. The length you need depends on the distance between your fridge connector and the flush valve you are connecting to.

If you’re replacing an old refrigerator, you might be able to reuse the water line. However, be careful when doing this. If the hose is calcified and restricting the water flow, you may not get the best results.

Also, a worn and old water pipe is more likely to rupture. A leaking water pipe can be a real headache. Water damage to the floor or refrigerator can be more expensive than a new hose.

Which material hose should I use?

Fridge hoses come in copper, stainless steel, or plastic tubing. There are pros and cons to each:

Plastic or PVC hoses: The cheapest option and the one that comes with most DIY ice maker installation kits. It is not very sturdy and is most likely to leak or eventually break. Also, some people think it leaves a strange taste in the water.

Copper: This is the option most professionals use. It’s durable and affordable. The downside of copper is that it isn’t as flexible as plastic tubing and kinks more easily.

Stainless Steel: Like copper, stainless steel is durable and strong. However, it is less prone to kinking and easier to handle. Many “DIY” installers prefer this option.

Refrigerators without ice or water dispensers do not require plumbing. You can skip the dispenser altogether if you don’t want the hassle of adding a water line. It’s also possible to find non-water hooked-up fridges that dispense water and ice from a tank in the fridge or freezer.

In theory, tap water kept in a clean container and then refrigerated should last forever. But just because you can drink old water doesn’t mean you’ll want to. Over time, small air bubbles will escape from stored water, leaving an unpleasant taste. To avoid this problem, discard your stored tap water supplies and replace them every six months so you always have fresh water if your local water utility’s supply becomes contaminated or is otherwise unavailable.

Preparation for storage

When storing tap water, it is important to use the right container. Glass, enameled metal, and fiberglass containers all work well for this task. You can also use plastic containers, but make sure they’re food-grade. These containers are often marked “HDPE 2”.

Clean the bottles thoroughly before filling them with water and make sure they are in good condition. Avoid the temptation to recycle old milk jugs or water bottles. Once you open a water storage container, aim to use it up within two to three days. It keeps a little longer in the fridge and you can extend its shelf life there to about three to five days. After that, the water will remain drinkable, but it may not taste as good.

When in doubt, throw it away

Unless you are in a survival situation like an earthquake, flood, or zombie apocalypse and you have no other choice, avoid drinking water you are unsure about. Do not drink stored tap water if it appears cloudy or has particles floating in it. It’s also best to avoid water that has been exposed to sunlight and algae has started to grow.

Even if the water looks good, throw it out if it smells strange. If you’re still not sure, take a little taste. If in any doubt, discard the water instead of consuming it. When water is scarce and throwing it away is unwise, be sure to boil or otherwise purify suspect water before drinking.

Running a water line to a refrigerator to power its ice maker and drinking water dispenser has never been easier. In the past, this was typically done with a bendable 1/4-inch copper pipe that snaked its way from the refrigerator to the nearest water source and tapped into the water line with a saddle valve or other type of fitting.

Now there are convenient (and less kinky) flexible 1/4-inch water supply hoses in lengths from 1 to 20 feet, as well as handy Add-A-Tee adapters that can be installed pretty much anywhere there’s an existing shut-off valve. This type of fitting is easy to install and less prone to leaking than a saddle valve.

In most cases, the water line can be routed from a kitchen faucet water supply line, through the kitchen cabinets and over to the refrigerator. If it’s not possible to run the line through the cabinets, you may need to run it through the floor and up to the refrigerator.

Tip Before you begin, look behind your fridge to make sure there is no water pipe or shut-off valve – either sticking out of the wall or sticking through the floor. If this is the case, all you need to do is connect a 1/4 x 1/4 inch flexible supply hose to the shut-off valve and the refrigerator.

before you start

Before you gather supplies and begin this project, it helps to become familiar with the items you will be using.

An Add-A-Tee adapter is an ideal plumbing fixture for this purpose. It simply screws onto the outlet of a standard shut-off valve, like the one you have under the kitchen sink. The faucet has a 3/8″ outlet connection for connecting the faucet line and a smaller 1/4″ connection for connecting the flexible water line to the refrigerator. Add-A-Tee fittings are available in a variety of sizes and connect to 3/8″ or 1/2″ water supplies. For a standard kitchen sink shut off valve you will need a 3/8 x 3/8 x 1/4 inch Add-A-Tee.

You’ll also need a 1/4-inch flexible water supply hose long enough to run from the Add-A-Tee to the fridge, and several feet so you can pull the fridge out without pulling on the water line. Measure the distance carefully and purchase a supply hose of sufficient length for the task.

Flex water supply hoses are available in either a heavy duty plastic nylon mesh or braided steel. Although braided steel is significantly more expensive, the extra strength it provides is worth the investment. Water leaks can cause significant (and very costly) damage, so buy the highest quality water supply hose you can find.

No, you don’t have to lay the water pipe. The ice maker itself doesn’t take up too much space in the freezer, so you can just turn it off and pretend it’s not there.
