need new pair of game shears (scissors) to clean squirrels

JFK52 said: I have gray squirrels that come en masse to my bird feeding grounds. I have a good friend whose family of two teenage girls love squirrels. I shoot 15-20 squirrels for him every year to make as a family dinner. This number hardly affects the local squirrel population as I have oak forests around my house. He absolutely loves the presents and I enjoy thinning out the squirrels. I need a good game shears or scissors to help me clean up these tree rodents. I looked on Fleabay and have several on my watch list.

Any recommendations from forum members who use scissors to clean all types of small game. It can be rabbits, squirrels, pigeons, pheasants, etc. You understand.

I have arthritis in both hands and also had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands. There are other issues with my hands that are related to aging. So one requirement would be generous grips on the scissors so I can actually use them with my hands. Good steel that retains an edge and a bone crusher are other requirements. A holster or case for storage when not in use would be nice. Finally, I need a pair that is reasonably priced. Click to expand…

There is a method of skinning squirrels that really eliminates the need for scissors, but you could certainly use them in place of a knife. We use a great video in our hunter end classes. It was formerly available on DVD from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, but I can’t find the link. I’ll do my best to describe it: They lift the tail and cut it between the bones, but don’t cut through the skin on the opposite side. They then make a small incision in the skin at a 45 degree angle from the base of the tail down on each side. Then lay the squirrel on its back on a hard surface. Step on the tail with the boot as close as possible. Grab both hind feet and lift them up. The skin should tear along these 45-degree creases around the abdomen. Skin peels off when lifted, like removing a t-shirt. You then stand on the skin hanging over your head, place your fingers under the skin of your abdomen and lift. This pulls the skin away from behind, like taking off a pair of pants. From there you break off the legs with a knife (could use scissors) and twist off the head. The squirrel is now fully skinned without being gutted. A small knife will suffice to disembowel the squirrel, but again you could use scissors. You can already use this method, but it was a godsend when I found it. It’s enormously easier than my old method of gutting the skin first, then slicing the skin around the middle and trying to pull it off each end I haven’t seen. There may be YouTube videos, but I really liked the one the department put out. Thank you Jack

Best buying guide for game shears

There is a lot to consider before you buy. This guide explains some key features and considerations to help you make an informed decision. After all, you want to be sure that you are getting your money’s worth.

type of game

When choosing a pair of game scissors, you should first find out what type of game you will be cutting. There are deer shears for both large and small game, so make sure you get the right ones for the job.

blade size

The next thing you want to figure out is what size blade you need. The size of the game scissor blade depends on the size of the animal. The blade should be tapered at the end and sharp enough to penetrate the skin but not cut too deeply.

A 2-3/4 to 4-1/2 inch blade should easily penetrate the skin of a small to medium sized animal. Larger blades cut through thicker material. For example, blades longer than 10 inches are often used for heavier tasks or larger animals.

However, for everyday use, any blade between 3 and 9 inches should suffice.

material

Blades are made from a variety of materials, each with its own characteristics and limitations of use, including sharpness, toughness, resistance to rust or corrosion, and edge wear.

The best blade material for game shears is one that doesn’t dull easily and doesn’t rust easily. For this reason, stainless steel blades are the best blade material for game shears.

Now you have a choice of stainless steel or carbon steel blades.

Choose carbon steel for a generally stronger blade that’s easy to sharpen to a razor-sharp edge. In addition, it is wear-resistant and therefore stays sharp longer.

However, if you are constantly exposing your blade to a lot of moisture, the stainless steel blade is a better choice. It is excellent, especially for cleaning fish.

In general, you can’t go wrong with stainless steel or carbon-stainless steel blades. But if you’re looking for something more durable, you might want to consider titanium-coated blades. These blades will not peel or chip and will keep their cutting edge longer.

blade edge

The best blade for game shears is a very sharp one with a narrow, straight edge. While not necessary in most cases, they come in handy when you need to cut tough materials or something that your regular scissors can’t easily cut.

Also, choose one with micro-serrations on one of the blades. A serrated blade edge for game shears is perfect for slicing through tough skin and thick fur. It avoids the inevitable need to use a knife to cut the skin off the meat.

Plus, a serrated edge is great for cutting rope, twine, and other materials. This is because it is less likely to become blunt or damaged by contact with a hard surface.

blade shape

An important consideration when buying game shears is the shape of the blades. The blade should have a curved edge. Curved edges make it easy to cut through tough meat or feathers. Straight blades are not ideal as they do not easily penetrate some foods.

weight

The weight of a pair of scissors is crucial for balance, grip and cutting power. In general, lightweight scissors are ideal for people who need to use their hands for long periods of time.

So if you want to spend more time cutting and less time lugging around heavy equipment, choose a lighter game shears. They don’t tire you out and cut cleaner than bulky game shears.

frequently asked Questions

Can you sharpen deer scissors?

Yes, you can sharpen game shears. It’s even easier if you choose one that comes with high-carbon stainless steel blades. However, always seek professional help if you don’t have the right equipment to do it.

Are game shears dishwasher safe?

All products on the listing are dishwasher safe. But before you put them in the dishwasher, try to get rid of the big residue as much as possible. The reason is not to clog the dishwasher.

Can all game shears be dismantled for cleaning?

No, but most do. Game shears with detachable blades not only ensure easy cleaning. It’s also easier to disinfect, put in the drying rack and keep safe.

Conclusion

This ends our test of the best game shears. Whether you want them for squirrels, rabbits, wild birds, or other small games, rest assured that our top picks are up for the task.
