Don’t be tempted to use poly. Stick to paint-based poly, especially if one of your main concerns is fuel resistance and you’ve already started on that. A skillful brand is the way to go:
WHY?
1) Extremely hard surface
2) Yes, THIS IS FUEL SAFE-
3) No sanding between layers – lacquer base melts into itself, each layer merging with the other
4) lighter than other finishing methods.
I would suggest brushing this up rather than spraying it on to ensure consistency. And I’ll warn you in advance, some might chime in with the old argument that lacquer is heavier than others… Yes, you’ll need to use more layers to fill the glass cloth, but remember, only about 20% of the Product remain, 80% evaporate.
I then use 320 grit, then 400 grit…. Now you are ready for paint prep…

Does gas eat clear coat?
No, but it might discolor the finish if you let it spill every time you fill up and never wash/wax the car. I have never done anything more than just wipe it off and the car has not rotted away yet. Gasoline will act as a solvent and eat away at the wax.

Some colors are, some are not. Some colors are unique and the same colors in another batch are not. Sometimes it dries, sometimes it takes weeks.

Are you restoring a motorcycle or would you like to customize your current motorcycle? Painting and applying a decal to your fuel tank can certainly be part of this process. Fuel tanks can often become discolored or rust over time. Learning how to touch up and paint these tanks yourself can save you money while creating a custom look. Are you wondering what the process of painting a plastic fuel tank is like? Big! We are here today to create a detailed guide on how to paint the plastic fuel tank on your bike and more.
Follow these steps to paint your bike’s plastic fuel tank:
Remove the fuel tank, empty the remaining fuel Prepare the surface of your fuel tank Apply primer Apply paint Seal with clear coat
With these five steps, you’ll have a new-looking fuel tank in no time. Read on as we discuss the details in each step and what materials and tools you’ll need along the way.
How to paint your bike’s plastic fuel tank
Plastic fuel tanks differ from other materials because gases can permeate plastic, causing paint and other graphics to rise. Luckily, there are paints that can combat this effect, allowing you to successfully do this job. Let’s take a closer look at the steps in the painting process.
1. Remove the fuel tank and drain the remaining fuel
The first step in this process is to remove the fuel tank from your bike. Be sure to drain all fuel before removing the tank from the bike. With the fuel tank disconnected, remove the caps and valves. Protect the openings of your tank by putting masking tape over them.
Amazon offers multi-surface masking tape here.
2. Prepare the surface of your fuel tank
Next, prepare the surface of your fuel tank to prepare it for a new coat of paint. Wash your tank with soap and water to remove exterior debris and debris. Remove any stickers or other stickers that are present.
Some fuel tanks may require you to remove a thick layer of dirt. To do this, you can scrape along the tank with a knife edge or, to have fewer scratches, use different grits of sandpaper. To speed up this process, you can wet sand your tank with a finish sander.
Click here to check out this orbital sander here on Amazon.
3. Apply primer
Once your old paint has been removed and your tank surface has been prepped and smoothed, you can begin applying the new coats. First you need to prime the surface. Use a plastic-specific primer for this job. Spray an even coat or primer over the entire surface of your tank. For an even flow you can apply 1-2 coats of primer. Allow time to dry between coats.
This primer here on Amazon is a multi-surface primer, ideal for plastics.
4. Apply paint
After your primer is completely dry, you can add your custom color to the tank. Just like the primer, your colored paint needs to be plastic specific. Apply 1-3 coats of paint evenly to your aquarium, allowing time to dry in between.

What color can I use on a fuel tank?
Choosing a color for a fuel tank can be difficult. There are some guidelines you need to follow to ensure your paint lasts. Fuel tanks are often exposed to outdoor environments that the paint must withstand. In addition, the vapors from the fuel can attack the paintwork. So what kind of colors can you successfully use on a fuel tank?
Acrylic paints and catalyzed urethane paints are recommended for fuel tanks. Urethane paints have a chemical base that actually hardens after curing. Once cured, this paint does not interact with solvents such as fuel, making it the ideal paint for a fuel tank.
5. Seal with clear coat
If you used catalyzed urethane paint to color your tank, the coat does not need to be sealed. However, if you used acrylic lacquer paint in step 4, you will need to seal and protect the paint. Seal in your previous layers of color with a clear, high gloss or non-gloss finish.
Check out this high gloss permanent sealer here on Amazon.
Allow your fuel tank to dry for the next 24-48 hours. After it is completely dry, you can remove the protective film, put the tankback on your bike and enjoy the new look.

Can plastic motorcycle tanks be painted?
Plastic motorcycle tanks can be painted. Many new tanks have been specially processed to prevent gas vapors from entering the tank. In these cases, you have a wider choice of colors to use on your gas tank. However, if you have an older tank, chances are it wasn’t processed that way and fumes can get through and blow up your layers of paint.
To avoid paint bubbling or falling, you need special paints for these tanks. Catalyzed urethane paint that we mentioned above is the best option for these jobs. Instead of painting, other home improvement enthusiasts have started staining their plastic fuel tanks, another option to explore. If you are curious about the dying process, watch this video:
Where can I find my motorcycle paint code?
If you wish to paint your fuel tank or any other part of your bike the same color as the rest of the bike you will need your motorcycle paint code. This code can be based on certain information, such as B. the paint designation given by the manufacturer.
With this paint name, you can match it with online VIN decoders or go to an auto paint shop to get the code. You can also try to find this information on your motorcycle’s certification label or parts identification sticker.
How to paint a rusty gas tank
Plastic gas tanks have the problem of penetrating fumes while metal gas tanks have the problem of rusting. If you are working with a rusty gas tank, you must remove the rust before applying new paint.
Removing rust from the outside can only take time, patience, and different grit sandpaper. Also take a look in your gas tank. If you find that there is rust here, you will need to treat that as well. Rust can be removed from inside a gas tank using a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.
The video below shows the process of removing rust from the inside of a gas tank.

What is the best paint for motorcycle engines?
You can take your bike customization to the next level by painting the motorcycle engine. Painting an engine is not just for looks. This process can also help protect your engine from rust and damage.
There are a handful of paints that are suitable for motorcycle engines. Which option is best for you will depend on your budget, what type of heat resistance you need, and what color you’re looking for. The best paint brands for your engine are Dupli-Color, Rust-Oleum, and Brite Touch.
You can find Brite Touch Engine paint here on Amazon.
Dupli-Color Motor Paint is great when you are looking for a high gloss finish. The heat resistance and durability are also positives for this brand. Rust-Oleum resists moisture and rust while reducing exhaust smoke. Brite Touch brands dry quickly and offer a high gloss finish but the heat resistance is slightly inferior compared to the other brands of motor paint.
Amazon offers Rust-Oleum motor paint in several colors here.

I’ve started painting my new Dirty Birdi with two tone Van/Suv acrylic paint based on suggestions I’ve read on these boards which indicate that this paint is fuel resistant. However, after reading some older posts, I see some mixed reviews. I can see that the two tone clear motor paint is fuel resistant but can this be sprayed over the paint I have already used? For compatibility reasons – you can apply varnish to varnish, you cannot apply varnish to enamel. The paint will crack, causing the underlying enamel to crack as well.
If you are definitely going to use varnish, be 110% sure the underlying color is varnish. If you are not 110% sure of the underlying color, use an acrylic varnish.
I have used the Dupli-Color on this aircraft and can confirm that it is fuel proof.
