Wax Additive
description
Wax additive is added to the last layer of gelcoat (without wax) or polyester lamination resin (without wax) on the last layer of a wet lamination to create a tack-free surface and allow the material to cure to a hard finish. If you are building up the layers in a wet layup application, you don’t want wax in the polyester resin because you want the layers to chemically bond, resulting in a stronger bond. It is only the last coat that needs wax additive to cure. The wax forms an air barrier, allowing the resin to cure to a tack-free state, ready for grinding and finishing.

Advice on using wax additive
This additive contains paraffin and styrene. When adding to the gelcoat, the hardener MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) must also be added.
The table below shows how much additive to add to wax-free gelcoat or polyester resin. Avoid using too much wax as it will create fish eyes and other undesirable results.

Important NOTE
At temperatures below 70°F, the paraffin component may solidify in the container. To return it to its liquid state, place the container in the sun or in front of a lamp. PLEASE USE CAREFULLY – WAX SUPPLEMENT IS FLAMMABLE!
