I recommend Genshin Impact the same way I used to recommend Black Desert Online: with huge caveats that don’t really matter unless you become an endgame goblin like me. The basic experience is incredible and couldn’t be more accessible. Genshin Impact is totally free and available on PS4, PS5, mobile and PC. It’s getting harder for me to remember with every update. Every breathtaking view, every fully voiced quest line, every intense boss fight – all for free. It’s witchcraft. The free-to-play games featured in those obnoxious commercials wish they were that good.

Just as Black Desert is a fun, cheap single-player RPG nested within a comically unbalanced MMO, Genshin Impact is an amazing open-world JRPG with a gacha monetization system that doesn’t spoil the new player experience. If you take something away from this article, let it be this: you don’t need to spend money on Genshin Impact to have a great time with it. One of the game’s biggest content creators, Enviosity, has built an entire brand around this fact. You get more than enough free resources and characters to advance your adventures and clear all base content. I spend a little on the game each month because I love it and want to support it, but we’ll talk about that later.

Genshin Impact is a third-person action game in which you quickly switch between a party of four characters to perform combos by combining elements like fire and water, ice and lightning, and so on. There are ranged and melee fighters, some dedicated healers and supports, selfish damage dealers and some that sit in between, and they’re all too good for this world. The combat is great, but it’s only half the fun at most, and I mean that in a good way. Teyvat, the world of Genshin Impact, is the real headliner. It’s loaded with secrets, treasure, resources, time trials, mini-bosses, puzzles, and other organic points of interest that give it an infectious energy and appeal that other open-world games would kill for. The many Breath of the Wild comparisons thrown out at Genshin Impact’s launch – some of them mine – were deserved, but it has outgrown this design shorthand. You could rightly compare it to many games, but there is no other game than Teyvat. You’ll come and stay for the breathtaking sights once you realize you can go there if you can see it and there’s probably something cool waiting to be found. Between the wanderlust and the irresponsibly beautiful soundtrack (please god give us a vinyl LP, MiHoYo), just walking around is a constant pleasure.

It’s meat and potatoes, and over the past year Genshin Impact has added so many fun side activities to the mix it’s hard to keep track of at times. There is an island builder that you can use to build houses for your favorite characters and build entire cities around them. You can now actually fish instead of catching salmon out of lakes with your bare hands. Events regularly feature platforming challenges, wobbly game modes like Tower Defense and Prop Hunt and Straight-Up Fall Guys, and optional bosses that can crush even experienced players.

Why I play Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact has become enviably dynamic, and I know that because I’ve experienced it all firsthand. I’m nearing 100% exploration in all regions, I’ve beaten every combat challenge in the game, completed every quest, enjoyed every song – and that stuff alone can last you like 100 hours, all for free. But I still jump into Genshin Impact every day, even if there’s nothing brand new to do. There’s a lot to be said for the catharsis of a relaxed everyday life, but for me it’s more about the satisfaction of seeing progress build up.

I get a few weird looks when I say Genshin Impact is like gardening for nerds, but it’s true. I put in a little time (or occasionally a lot) every day and spend a little money every month, and every few weeks or so I get to step back and admire what I’ve accomplished. The only difference is that I’m raising valuable anime characters instead of growing plants, but that’s really just splitting hairs. It’s fun to see my favorite characters getting stronger. I can decimate challenges that previously seemed impossible or experiment with party compositions that weren’t available to me in the past. Every day brings a bit of progress – better gear, more XP, upgrade materials collected – and that’s enough to keep me going until the next big update.

Update day is always a joy. It’s like a little party. Gamers are hyped, Reddit and Twitch are buzzing, incredible fan art is everywhere. The launch of Inazuma, Genshin Impact’s first new region, is one of my fondest gaming memories. New things to explore, new characters to meet, new characters to wish for…

Oh yes, wishes. Now we’re getting into a bit of gacha stuff, so let’s address the elephant in the room.

How much I spent on Genshin Impact – and what I got in return

Aside from being a good video game, Genshin Impact has made over a billion dollars in a year because it’s funded by the power of RNG (and waifus). You can spend Primogems to get specific characters and weapons in limited-time banners that are basically glorified loot boxes, and you can buy more Primogems with real money if you want to keep the proverbial dice rolling. If you’re unlucky, buying a single five-star character outright can cost over $250 worth of Primogems. With a five-star base rate of 0.6% per roll, you’re going to be very unlucky. If that sounds like gambling, it’s because it’s like gambling. Remember the loot box blowback from a few years ago? Yes, gacha games have been lightening wallets long before that, and they just weathered that storm unchanged. Gacha is the original loot box, baby, and it doesn’t care about you.

That’s the ugly part, and it’s important to acknowledge it. Here’s the good news: I spent well under $250 on Genshin Impact and I have every character and weapon I’ve ever really wanted. You can get a lot of Primogems just by playing the game, and if you’re looking to spend it, a little money and patience can go a long way. Earlier this year, I totaled what 100 days and $60 in Genshin Impact got me. The short version is: much more than I would have thought. Now that a year has passed, let’s check in again.

By purchasing the $10 Battle Passes and $5 Login Passes with every update, I’ve now spent $150 on the game, which is a little over $12 a month on average. In that time, I’ve drawn a total of 19 five-star characters and four five-star weapons. My luck was above average so someone with the same investment could have gotten less five stars but still more than enough for a healthy collection.

I will continue to buy both passes – and not buy clumps of Primogems for the foreseeable future. They’re both good deals on different things. If you want more new characters, purchase the Welkin Login Pass for the additional Primogems. If you need more resources to level your characters, buy the Battle Pass to grease the wheels.

But if you just want a great JRPG that gives you enough cool characters to try out different playstyles, you don’t need to buy anything, because that’s Genshin Impact – and as we’ve discovered, it’s free. Believe me, the salesman, the leprechaun, the gardener. Do yourself a favor – fuck it, do me a favor – and give it a try.

All of this suggests that the plan is to keep Genshin Impact alive beyond 2030, as many people return every time there is a new update. And this at the expense of updates with less content than initially intended and the repetition of banners of very popular characters such as Ventis, one that they put at the beginning of Genshin Impact’s life. They could also repeat events like stars that don’t return.

The first Anemo Catalyst user in Genshin Impact literally punches beyond his weight, harnessing the power of wind to smash the hell out of enemies and adding elements to cause explosions with his wind pattern kick. Like Bennett or Xingqiu, Heizou is a four-star hotel that truly offers five-star value.

This five-star hydro-archer is Teyvat’s closest thing to being a secret agent, running around wrapping evildoers in with her Lingering Lifelines. Yelan really shines as a sub-DPS. Basically a better version of Xingqiu’s Raincutter Burst, her Exquisite Throw can combine with other characters to deal some serious damage.

The Chief of the Kamisato Clan is a strong damage dealer, thanks in large part to his fast Shunsuiken Hydro attacks and the Namisen effect that boosts them. One of the most powerful Anemo characters in the game, this deadbeat bard uses his Elemental Burst to summon an AoE hurricane that sucks in enemies and absorbs other elements to trigger Swirl. This makes Venti a versatile support for most damaging characters. Also, it levitates, which is cool.

As a Geo Archon, Zhongli is understandably a bit of a rock. His buffing shields are the best in the game and he gets increased damage based on max HP. His stone steles also resonate with other geo-constructs and deal damage. A good pairing for Ningguang’s Jade Screen ability, Albedo’s Solar Isotoma, or even Itto’s bull Ushi.

The Dandelion Knight is incredibly versatile and that’s what makes her such a strong character. First, her healing is based on her attack stat, meaning she can be a good support and sub-DPS rolled into one. Her elemental ability can also be used to rally enemies and blast them off ledges while giving her a hefty charge of energy.

As the highest physical DPS character in Genshin, Eula is very strong. But where other characters deal elemental AoE damage, Eula’s powerful Icetide Vortex and Glacial Illumination abilities make for more of a one-shot playstyle, as she collects stacks of Grimhearts to increase her damage output.

This canine general is extremely good at what he does – he provides strong banner-based buffs to groups made up mostly of Geo characters. While he’s still usable without a Geo party, that’s where he really shines as a supporting character.

This Tengu Archer can be powerful if you activate her constellations, and the ambush based attack buffs from her Tengu Juurai are a very cool concept. In actual gameplay, however, they’re much more cumbersome to use, and that makes Fischl a more consistent Electric Archer for your party.

While this housekeeper for the Kamisato Clan can be pushed towards damage, he’s mainly good at one thing: shields. Both Thomas’ Elemental ability and Burst offer Pyro Shields that stack, meaning he can offer some pretty wild damage resistance to your party.

Genshin Impact’s first pint-sized Claymore user is a fun support character. Fuuin Dash transforms her into an elemental chariot that dashes back and forth over enemies while triggering reactions, and her Muji-Muji Daruma can heal and deal Anemo damage. Still, Sucrose is probably a more solid support choice unless you like their somewhat fiddly playstyle.

Mondstadt’s first and only idol is a great healer, but she lacks the added utility and damage of Jean and Bennett. Still, she’s very good for a character that Genshin gives you for free after the quest The Song of the Dragon and Freedom.

While a solid Electro damage dealer, this Pirate Captain is generally considered less preferable to Razor due to their primarily defensive elemental abilities. However, her burst is very strong and she makes her a decent tank sub DPS.

Chongyun is a great Cryo DPS when paired with characters like Bennett and Xingqui for Melt, Freeze, and Shatter reactions, but can be somewhat overshadowed by Genshin’s other amazing Cryo characters.

As a free character you get for completing early story quests, Kaeya will most likely be your source of Cryo in the early game. But it’s hard to recommend investing in him when there are so many stronger Cryo characters out there (unless you think he’s hot, that is).

As you can imagine for a killer nun, Rosaria is all about quick and deadly strikes to increase critical hit rate with her passives and attack speed with Constellation 1. She pairs well to further increase the effectiveness of a high damage character like Diluc.

This zombie herbalist is an incredible healer, and since her talisman-based healing scales based on damage, like Jean, she can be an effective sub-DPS. This heal can often feel overdone, however, and as a four-star Cryo support, Diona is often preferable in terms of both versatility and rarity.

As a four-star Pyro character, Xinyan is easier to draw than Diluc, but she’s actually better as a physical DPS support than in her original damage dealer role. Her passive “…It’s Rock ‘N’ Roll” increases physical damage by 15% for characters protected by her shield skill.

Although she’s a good source of Electro and useful in some party combos, Lisa’s Elemental Skill doesn’t persist after she switches, making her less effective than other four-stars like Fischl.

The Traveler is a decent early-game character and relatively strong, but he’s outclassed by Genshin’s other five-stars in terms of Anemo and Geo. Genshin is a game about trying new characters, so it’s not surprising that the first character we get is one of the least used.

New Genshin Impact characters

The latest new Genshin Impact character is Shikanoin Heizou, a four-star cop who uses the power of wind to kick and punch criminals. Heizou is the first melee Catalyst user in Genshin, and it gives him a truly unique playstyle that’s far more aggressive than regular Catalyst users.

miHoYo also revealed three characters coming with Sumeru in version 3.0. Tighnari (opens in new tab) and Collei (opens in new tab) are both Dendro Arc users, with the former being a five star and the latter a four star player, so they could be the update’s first banner characters be .

There’s also electro four-star Dori (opens in new tab); a Sumerian merchant who has a spirit that she uses to regenerate energy and health. The approximate release date for Genshin Impact 3.0 is August 24th, and while we don’t know when exactly the three characters will launch, we do know their abilities.

What is pity in Genshin Impact?

To get Genshin Impact characters, you must use the game’s gacha system to “wish” on a banner. You use Genshin Impact Primogems to purchase Intertwined Fate or Acquaint Fate, which grant a single wish and can be used individually or in packs of ten for a guaranteed four-star hero.

Different banners offer different characters and increased pull rates. So if you want a specific character and don’t want to spend money, it’s better to save up your Primogems and wait for them to be featured. It’s also important to understand the Genshin Impact Compassion and Gentle Compassion systems:

After nine wishes without four stars, the tenth wish is guaranteed four stars.

After 89 wishes without five stars, the 90th is guaranteed to be a five star. From 75 wishes, the chance of drawing a five-star value increases with each wish until it reaches 100% on the 90th.

After 79 wishes on a weapon banner without five stars, the 80th is guaranteed five stars. From 65 wishes, the chance of drawing a five-star value increases with each wish until it reaches 100% on the 80th.

Dragging someone you already have will convert them into an item that you can use to unlock a Constellation upgrade for your current version of the character.
