Dozens of men before Prince Charles have borne the title of Prince of Wales throughout British history.

Charles, who also holds the title Duke of Cornwall, is the 21st Prince of Wales and was the first since 1936.

The title of Prince of Wales dates back to 1301 when King Edward I gave it to his son, the future Edward II.

Since then, many of the monarch’s eldest sons have received the title.

Who was Prince of Wales before Charles?

The title of Prince of Wales was vacant for several years before it was bestowed on Prince Charles.

The last Prince of Wales was Prince Edward, who was bestowed the title seven weeks after his father’s accession to the throne. He was only 16 years old.

After the death of his father, King George V, he became King Edward VIII in 1936.

Edward had one of the shortest reigns in royal history, abdicating less than a year after becoming king to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

After the abdication, Edward’s brother ascended the throne as King George VI.

But George’s daughter, Princess Elizabeth, future Queen Elizabeth II, would not hold the title of Princess of Wales.

The title of Prince of Wales can only be bestowed on the heir apparent male.

Because of this, Elizabeth was known only as heir presumptive until she became queen in 1952.

When did Prince Charles become Prince of Wales?

Prince Charles was bestowed the title of Prince of Wales in 1958, but he was not officially invested in the role until 1969.

Prince Charles was installed as Prince of Wales by Queen Elizabeth II in a televised ceremony at Caernarfon Castle.

Prior to the event, Charles spent a semester studying Welsh at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Charles pledged allegiance to his mother during the ceremony, saying: “I, Charles, Prince of Wales, will be your liege man for life and limb.”

He is the longest-serving Prince of Wales – but also the longest-serving heir apparent to the British throne, the longest-serving Duke of Cornwall and the longest-serving Duke of Rothesay.

Who will be Prince of Wales when Charles becomes king?

Many believe that Charles’ eldest son, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, will be made the next Prince of Wales when his father becomes king.

However, the title of Prince of Wales is not automatically passed down the royal family, the Express reports.

Only the reigning monarch can bestow such a title, meaning the decision will rest with Charles when he takes the throne.

Charles could choose to make William the new Prince of Wales immediately or at a later date.

The future king would also have the power to bestow the title elsewhere.

Glen plaid (short for Glen Urquhart plaid), also known as Glenurquhart plaid or Prince of Wales plaid, is a woolen fabric with a woven twill design of small and large plaids.[1] It is typically black/grey and white or more muted in color, specifically with two dark and two light stripes alternating with four dark and four light stripes, creating an intersecting pattern of irregular checks.[2] Glencheck as a woven pattern can be extended to cotton shirts and other non-wool fabrics.

The name derives from the Glenurquhart valley in Inverness-shire, Scotland, where checked wool was first used in the 19th century by the New Zealand-born Countess of Seafield[3] to outfit her gamekeepers,[1] although the name Glen Plaid does not appear before 1926.[4] Glen Plaid is also known as the Prince of Wales Check because it was popularized by King Edward VIII as Prince of Wales.[5]

In 1994, Jonathan Dimbleby published his Authorized Life of Prince Charles. Though Dimbleby was occasionally reserved in his remarks, he was essentially expressing Prince Charles’ feelings toward the world — as they stood in 1994. The prince opened files, authorized access, and hoped that through this approach he could put much of the past behind him and move forward unencumbered into the future.

We must therefore take seriously everything that Dimbleby wrote about Camilla Parker Bowles, now the Duchess of Cornwall. There is a line in that book that sums up the relationship: “In Camilla Parker Bowles, the Prince found the warmth, understanding, and stability he had always craved and could not find in any other person.”

Parker Bowles has always been considered the only non-negotiable element in the Prince of Wales’ life. They met each other when they were both in their early twenties. As Camilla Shand, she was something of a girl in town, more worldly than Prince Charles, free from his shyness and enthusiastic about outdoor pursuits. She smoked, which he reportedly disliked but, in her case, was willing to overlook. She had an earthy quality. She had the confidence of her class that can best be summed up as the Gloucestershire hunting set (although she was from Sussex). Her friends neither spoke to gossip columnists nor bothered to appear in Tatler. If her pictures got published, it wasn’t because of her maneuvering. They were introduced by Prince Charles’ Cambridge friend Lucia Santa Cruz, who pointed out that Edward VII and Camilla’s ancestor, Alice Keppel, were quite close.

According to Dimbleby, she was “pretty, vivacious and she smiled with both her eyes and her mouth”. When he wrote that “she didn’t dress up,” he meant that she hardly cared about her looks or her clothes. Apparently, they enjoyed the no-frills humor, the Goons, and “silly accents and goofy looks.” Apparently, Prince Charles “lost his heart to her almost immediately.” With heart lost, he arguably fell into a long romantic saga, frustrated by outside events, which was only resolved by his marriage to her in 2005, some 33 years later.

As early as 1972, the public image of the Prince of Wales was in sharp contrast to the man himself. He was considered the most eligible bachelor in the world, a kind of royal action man with the world at his feet. But the truth was different. He was rocked by a lot of inner turmoil, for one he never believed anyone he wanted to marry wanted to marry him or take on the responsibilities the position demanded, not to mention the relentless media scrutiny. For his wife would one day be queen by his side.

There was another problem. The Prince was in the Navy and was scheduled to depart on HMS Minerva in January 1973 for an eight-month stint at sea. He last saw Camilla in December 1972 and then sailed away. They broke up without certainty that the relationship would survive the eight-month separation. This would greatly regret the prince in the years that followed.

It seems that Camilla felt she could never become Princess of Wales as she would not be considered suitable. She returned to Andrew Parker Bowles, who had been in her life prior to her brief encounter (roughly six months) with Prince Charles. Parker Bowles was a handsome cavalry officer in the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues), a man without the prince’s inherent timidity who did not hesitate to strike out in affairs of love. He was to prove himself a womanizer with numerous conquests in society, and before his marriage he had dated Princess Anne. He was in every way a more dashing suitor than her withdrawn prince. In April she was engaged to him.

Prince Charles was devastated. He said he enjoyed “such a blissful, peaceful and mutually happy relationship.” Now he felt an acute sense of emptiness, made worse by the unwelcome news that his sister, Princess Anne, was marrying Lieutenant Mark Phillips, which he denounced as a serious disparity.

Prince Charles left the Royal Navy at the end of 1976. By now, the press was hot on the idea that he should find a wife. This intensified when he turned 30 in 1978, having unwisely stated that 30 was a pretty good age for a man like him to take a wife. His 30th birthday passed and there was no bride.

Andrew Parker Bowles was close to the royal family. His parents were close friends of the Queen Mother. The Queen Mother frequently invited Parker Bowles’ parents, Derek and Dame Ann, to stay and later the names of Andrew and Camilla Parker Bowles appeared in the guest book of Castle of Mey, the Queen Mother’s home in the far north of Scotland.

Parker Bowles rose through the Household Cavalry. He had played polo on Prince Charles’ team and was on his way to becoming commander of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment from 1981 to 1983 and a Silver Stick from 1987 to 1990. He was one of the royal family’s inner circle of guests, and so was Camilla.

It’s hard to delve into the private marriages of others. There is no doubt that Andrew Parker Bowles was a popular figure in royal circles and on the London social scene. This may have prompted Prince Charles to resume his friendship with Camilla, now mother of two children, Tom (born 1974, a godchild of Prince Charles) and Laura in 1978. Certainly she was his closest female confidant in 1979, and despite rumors they were having an affair, he refused to sacrifice her to convention. He told Dimbleby that she was his “touchstone” and his “sounding board”.

I remember being told at the time that Camilla Parker Bowles played a prominent role in sanctioning Lady Diana Spencer as the Prince’s bride. Everyone was aware that he had to marry for dynastic reasons. Diana was perfect on paper, a flawless aristocrat who had grown up practically within sight of Sandringham, the scion of a well-known family, the Spencers, and very strong in the form of the Queen Mother, or so it seemed. In fact, her two grandmothers and four of her great-aunts were ladies-in-waiting to the Queen Mother. Lady Diana Spencer was no stranger to royalty.

Although contemporary sources, even within Clarence House, give conflicting versions of the circumstances of this marriage, one thing is certain: Lady Diana Spencer was in love with Prince Charles. History would confirm that he wasn’t in love with her. I remember a courtier at the time saying, “Nobody told her love wasn’t part of the deal.” The prince remained devoted to Camilla, but he realized he had to marry. In doing so, he had to give up on Camilla — and he famously presented her with a bracelet with the initials ‘GF’ standing for ‘Girl Friday’. Unfortunately, Lady Diana Spencer found this gift and was deeply upset by it. The balance of evidence is that the prince barely saw Camilla for the next five years.

Meanwhile, his young bride, who wed in July 1981, made him proud by producing two beautiful sons, Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984. She became immensely popular in the media and introduced Prince Charles to his public engagements in the shadows. Shortly after, one commentator wondered if Prince Charles was in fact the only man in London “not in love with her”.

But the Princess of Wales was convinced that her husband would continue his affair with Camilla. It wasn’t until 1986, after the marriage had irretrievably crumbled and Prince Charles left himself as “in some kind of cage pacing in it, longing to be free,” that he returned to Camilla. The twice broken love affair was resumed.

It would therefore be fair to say that despite the vast amount of prose that has been written about the so-called love between Charles and Diana, the real love affair at the end was between Charles and Camilla. The Princess of Wales was not unaware either, when she said in her Panorama interview in 1995: “There were three people in this marriage.”

Matters between the Waleses were getting worse and, regrettably, both sides were trying to present their side of the story – the Princess working with Andrew Morton on her 1992 book, the Prince speaking to Dimbleby on TV and Camilla confessing to his adultery , and then The Dimbleby Biography. The final straw in this unpleasant process was the Princess’s Panorama interview, in which she went so far as to suggest that he would make a bad king. At this point, the Queen intervened and insisted that the formal separation, which had taken place in 1992, become a divorce. They divorced in 1996 and the princess died in a car accident in Paris in August 1997.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles had fretted over how he could get Camilla Parker Bowles to be accepted by a hostile British public.

Little by little, Camilla was brought out of the shadows, seen with him at public events, reintroduced to the Queen, and finally, in early 2005, it was announced that the couple were getting married. All sorts of troubles beset their plans. In April they were married in a civil ceremony at the Guildhall, Windsor, with a blessing service at St George’s Chapel.

Some of her old friends say she was dying to marry Prince Charles. Others detected a touch of laziness in her character, meaning she would not hold grudges against those who had slandered her in the past. She had royal duties and responsibilities to shoulder, and even her harshest critics would find it hard to blame her for discharging those duties. In the 10 years of their marriage, she has not made a single inappropriate comment or stepped out of line. In fact, she’s expert at saving the day when the prince shows signs of irritation himself. She covers well for him.

Though he will never be anything but a slightly troubled soul, he has been more generous in support of Camilla than he ever was to his first wife, referring to her in speeches as “my beloved wife”. The Queen clearly likes her and she has been awarded both the Royal Family Order and a GCVO (Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order). She frequently wears the Queen Mother’s most extravagant jewels, including the five-strand diamond necklace (bequeathed by Mrs. Ronald Greville in 1942). She wisely kept her own home in Wiltshire, which occasionally serves as a retreat from royal life.

So what kind of king will Prince Charles be? The answer is that we don’t know. But when he becomes king, he essentially becomes a new man. Bertie, Prince of Wales was considered a spendthrift until he became Edward VII and was soon one of the most respected diplomatic monarchs in Europe.

Frances Donaldson wrote that the Duke of Windsor was made up of three different men – a very popular and popular Prince of Wales, an irritable king with a big problem on his mind, and an embittered ex-king as the Duke of Windsor. The qualities of George VI, formerly a timid Duke of York, were not fully demonstrated until he presided over a nation at war with Germany between 1940 and 1945.

Then watch the transformation of the Duchess of Cornwall. Literally up until the day of her marriage to the prince in 2005, she was portrayed by the media as the hated lover. Immediately thereafter, she was considered a supportive wife.

Prince Charles often feels that he has missed out in life. His mother, the queen, will find it difficult to follow. His son, Prince William, is popular, and young Prince George’s every appearance is greeted with sticky glee. Prince Charles is held in high esteem by many who have worked with him on his projects. He is a man of taste and culture and his reign could prove extremely interesting. Its potential can have an intriguing bloom in late life.

It is extremely unlikely that Prince Charles will behave as ‘King Charles III’ in the recent West End production – he had to abdicate because he was too political and refused to sanction legislation passed by Parliament. He is well aware of the constitutional restrictions placed on a monarch. He has long known that his most important contribution to this country is as the Prince of Wales.

A creature of habit, the prince loves a good routine, including his never-changing breakfast, his favorite cocktail, and his scornful lunch. Prince Charles is considered one of the best dressed men in the world

If you want to be the crowned king, casual wear is not really part of your repertoire. Ever since he was a little boy, the prince has always dressed formally, with suits, ties and smart shoes. Now in his seventh decade, the prince is considered one of the best-dressed men in the world.

The prince has landed on GQ’s Best Dressed list multiple times. When he was recognized for his style in 2013, he said of The Telegraph: “GQ’s recognition was heartening to say the least. I took it very much as a vote for what is perhaps best described as the classic and timeless look of British style.”

Prince Charles didn’t win his Best Dressed title in typical suits, his tailored suits are designed to fit him like a glove. According to biographer Sally Bedell Smith’s book Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, via USA Today,

[He always wears] a double-breasted suit with no pocket flaps, a handkerchief bulging from the breast pocket, a flower in his buttonhole, and Turnbull & Asser shirts with French cuffs.

Prince Charles takes great care of his shoelaces

Not only is Prince Charles keen on having perfect suits, he even saves scraps of fabric if they need to be mended, he’s also reportedly obsessed with his shoelaces.

Nothing about the Prince of Wales’ outfit can be out of place. In his book Not in Front of the Corgis: Secrets of Life Behind the Royal Curtain via Daily Mail, Prince Charles’ former royal servant Brian Hoey claims that the prince requires his shoelaces to be ironed when he removes his shoes.

We have no idea who would keep an eye on the prince’s shoelaces so closely, but anything is possible.

Prince Charles is known for his relentless schedule. He is often way ahead of his family members when royal appearances and duties are counted each year.

The name

Named after the Prince of Wales (later known as Edward VII) who made the check famous, the Prince of Wales check is also known as the Glen check, Glen plaid (in the US) and Glen Urquhart check. Although the terms are used interchangeably these days, it takes a trained eye and a true tailor to know the subtle differences and understand the complex but fascinating story behind the two. Allow us to give you the 101…

The history

Glencheck dates from the early 19th century and was first developed by the Countess of Seafield in the Vale of Glenurquhart in Invernesshire, Scotland as a signature tweed of the Seafield estate. It was here that the Prince of Wales, who often took photographs at the estate, spotted the check and borrowed it to make his own variant. It was then further popularized in the US by his elegant grandson, the Duke of Windsor (formerly known as Edward VIII, Abdication Glory).

The look

The pattern consists of two dark and two light stripes alternating with four dark and four light stripes to create a criss-cross pattern of irregular checks. The Seafield estate’s original glen check was a woven twill in a repeating pattern of large broken checks in tones of black and gray and was considered highly inventive at the time. The Prince of Wales initially adjusted the plaid by simply changing the colors to brown and cream. As he continued to adjust the check, he later scaled it down to the smaller size that is better known today. Following in the footsteps of his well-dressed grandfather, the Duke of Windsor made his own modifications, boldly adding overchecks in red and blue.

Today the names Glen Check and Prince of Wales Check can be used to refer to any textile with the signature boxy graphic pattern of the two original styles in muted colors and on a smaller scale…resulting in a fabric that is classic and contemporary at the same time . The result: a sleek modern look with an undeniably sophisticated European tone.

The Icons

There is no doubt that the Duke of Windsor quickly established himself as a style icon thanks to his daring tailoring instincts, his avant-garde pattern play and of course his undeniably elegant Prince of Wales suits. But although the material is of royal origin, it still causes a sensation in pop culture to this day. The dos and don’ts of Glen Plaid

Glen plaids are this spring/summer. The Glen check (from the original Glenurquhart check) is made up of smaller and larger checks to create a pattern. Native to the Scottish Highlands, it was popularized among the British aristocracy by the Prince of Wales, Edward III.

Glen plaid (short for Glen Urquhart plaid), also known as Glenurquhart plaid or Prince of Wales plaid, is a woolen fabric with a woven twill design of small and large plaids.[1] It is typically black/grey and white or more muted in color, specifically with two dark and two light stripes alternating with four dark and four light stripes, creating an intersecting pattern of irregular checks.[2] Glencheck as a woven pattern can be extended to cotton shirts and other non-wool fabrics.

The name derives from the Glenurquhart valley in Inverness-shire, Scotland, where checked wool was first used in the 19th century by the New Zealand-born Countess of Seafield[3] to outfit her gamekeepers,[1] although the name Glen Plaid does not appear before 1926.[4] Glen Plaid is also known as the Prince of Wales Check because it was popularized by King Edward VIII as Prince of Wales.[5]

In other words, the Prince of Wales fabric pattern, despite its internationally known name (French Prince of Galles, Spanish Príncipe de Gales, Italian Principe di Galles, etc.), is not a Welsh pattern, but a Scottish one.

Notable bearers[ edit ]

Pee-wee Herman is famous for his light gray Prince of Wales check suit, and US President Ronald Reagan was considered “non-presidential” in a gray and blue Prince of Wales check suit on a trip to Europe in 1982.[6] Cary Grant wore an iconic gray Glencheck suit in the 1959 American spy thriller North by Northwest.
