14. EVIDENCE CONVENTION

The name

Named after the Prince of Wales (later known as Edward VII) who made the check famous, the Prince of Wales check is also known as the Glen check, Glen plaid (in the US) and Glen Urquhart check. Although the terms are used interchangeably these days, it takes a trained eye and a true tailor to know the subtle differences and understand the complex but fascinating story behind the two. The history

Glencheck dates from the early 19th century and was first developed by the Countess of Seafield in the Vale of Glenurquhart in Invernesshire, Scotland as a signature tweed of the Seafield estate. It was here that the Prince of Wales, who often took photographs at the estate, spotted the check and borrowed it to make his own variant. It was then further popularized in the US by his elegant grandson, the Duke of Windsor (formerly known as Edward VIII, Abdication Glory).

The look

The pattern consists of two dark and two light stripes alternating with four dark and four light stripes to create a criss-cross pattern of irregular checks. The Seafield estate’s original glen check was a woven twill in a repeating pattern of large broken checks in tones of black and gray and was considered highly inventive at the time. The Prince of Wales initially adjusted the plaid by simply changing the colors to brown and cream.
