Little did I know that they DO NOT clean their own designer handbags. After discussing options with the very pleasant and informative Gucci Sales Consultant, he provided the name and phone number of a local shoe and luggage repair store that cleans and repairs luxury designer handbags.

I am a true luxury lover when it comes to high end quality, but you will very rarely see me paying full price. I have a small collection of designer handbags and a lot of them are made out of canvas material which, well, if a mother of four gets so dirty the beige color started to look black. Oops! In order to get them back in ‘like new’ shape and condition (and to take preventive measures to avoid damaging these vintage pieces), I’ve looked around Gucci and Louis Vuitton retail stores in hopes of checking them out to have their chains cleaned. Little did I know that they do NOT clean their own designer handbags. After discussing the options with the very pleasant and informative Gucci sales consultant, he provided the name and phone number of a local shoe and luggage repair shop that cleans and repairs luxury designer handbags.

What I didn’t tell the Gucci sales representative was that the price I paid for these designer handbags was 20% of retail value ($200 for the handbag and $50 for the Louis Vuitton wallet). I had no idea how expensive these shoe and luggage repair shops were! The offers ranged from $150 for a handbag (no leather/canvas) to the $200 range! Ouch! I honestly found it hard to swallow such a large amount. We started calling various dry cleaners and it turned out they also offer luxury handbag cleaning and repairs!

The winner: Eldorado Cleaners at Eastern/Windmill in Henderson! Not only can you have your garments cleaned for $1.75 each (with coupon), you can also have your designer handbags cleaned and/or repaired at an extremely reasonable price! I had both my Louis Vuitton handbag and wallet cleaned AND the straps on my Gucci handbag repaired. Prices start at $45 and increase depending on a variety of factors.

It was a very simple process:

1. Go to the dry cleaners and let them know what specialty items you want cleaned.

2. The dry cleaner calls the seller or specialist who handles these items to get an initial quote

3. Pay a deposit equal to half the estimate.

4. The seller or specialist will call you to confirm whether the price is still the same, lower or higher before performing the services. Once you have authorized the price and services, they complete the order.

5. The seller or specialist sends it back to the dry cleaner

6. The cleaner will call you as soon as she arrives.

7. Pick up and pay the balance! * Always check your items first before paying or leaving the dry cleaners!

Total cleaning and repair cost was $120 (1/3 the cost compared to other dry cleaners and leather shoe/upholstery shops). So next time you decide it’s time to have your luxury handbags cleaned, be sure to call your local dry cleaner and of course always try to negotiate the best price possible.

During lunch two friends exchanged stories about the last successful shopping sprees. One, a young professional who had just started in fashion, told her friend about a score she felt was too good not to share.

The woman explained how she bought a Gucci SoHo disco bag for hundreds less than she otherwise expected. A source close – very close – to the author reported:

“I could not believe it. I was going back and forth and had saved for the bag anyway, but the discount was too good to pass up. The seller told me, “You know, if you have relatives in another state, you can send the bag to them. That way you don’t pay New York sales tax! It will save you a lot.”

The woman said she was quick to agree to the deal, excited that she could more easily afford the designer bag.

But there’s a catch to the story: preoccupied with thinking about outfits to wear with her new handbag, she didn’t realize that she’d only casually agreed to dodging taxes.

“Yes, it’s illegal,” James Gazzale, spokesman for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, confirmed to Yahoo Style. “In most cases, when the seller purchases a taxable item or service in the state, or when it is delivered to you in the state, the seller will collect sales tax from you. The seller then pays the tax to the tax office,” Gazzale explained.

It’s not exactly within the law, but sellers can shift the responsibility onto the buyer to take care of paying the tax, even after the sale. When a seller makes a sale without collecting sales tax, the buyer must pay what is known as a “use tax” on their annual tax return.

That seems like a lot of effort to make savings on a luxury item. New York State’s sales tax is among the lowest in the country at just 4 percent; However, when combined with New York City’s local sales tax, consumers pay a total of 8.875 percent on clothing and accessories over $110, making it one of the highest combined sales tax rates in the country. So, for this $975 used Gucci disco bag, you’ll avoid an extra $110 on your bill.

“We don’t accept cash and we don’t play with taxes,” says Tammy Gates, Michael’s vice president. “Are people trying to charge discounts based on New York sales tax? Maybe, but certainly not one of our regulars as we don’t play in that game. We collect a tax on everything purchased from our store, whether you live in New York City or not.”

Of course, finding ways to cut costs isn’t limited to shopping in the US. Shoppers have tried to take advantage of the US dollar – which has strengthened since the financial crisis – when traveling abroad. With some currencies weaker than the US dollar, like the British pound following the Brexit referendum, buying luxury items (e.g. a Burberry jacket) while you’re in London means saving on the exchange rate.

As Racked explains: “A pair of Gucci heeled loafers currently available at Net-a-Porter are currently £420 – $580 at current exchange rates. A month ago they would have cost you about $613. A selfridges Mary Katrantzou metallic jacquard dress that retails for £1,785 is $2,468 right now – down from about $2,606 last month.”

On that, Gazalle says that if New Yorkers buy this Burberry trench coat in Europe, they’ll owe the use tax when they return to the US, something that’s not included in the price if the person carries the item back in their luggage.

Good news for anyone — especially the source close to this author — who’s worried about an IRS audit or fine: you haven’t committed tax evasion until you file your taxes this year, assuming you skip shopping for which You owe the consumption tax. As if tax season wasn’t stressful enough…
