Getting a haircut is a big deal for kids with autism or sensory issues. Many families struggle to find an understanding and patient barber. One who can understand the sensory sensitivities that come with cutting hair. We personally cut our boys’ house at home, but I remember how difficult those first few haircuts were when J. was a toddler and preschooler. We’d have to cut a bit, pause, and repeat over and over again. It’s much easier now, but there are still challenges we face when cutting his hair. It’s helpful to keep repeating the steps for J and telling him how long I’ll be cutting his hair. Basically we use a verbal social communication story with him these days. However, below are many options that will hopefully make the whole process easier for your child and family.

We tried many things from iPad, kids hair salons, bribery, you name it. One day we happened to meet a very young barber who took Niam under his wing. Before you knew it, he had formed a relationship with Niam, became his friend. Niam even let him wash his hair! Everything is possible. Do not give up. Every little step adds up! Use social history to teach and review important skills.
