Frequent use of hairspray can cause breathing difficulties. Some of the other side effects are also low blood pressure and lung disorders. Many hairsprays contain the compound propylene glycol, which can be toxic and even cause cancer if inhaled regularly. Instead, use these natural hair tonics for longer, stronger and shinier hair. Hairspray came into vogue after World War II, when the cosmetics industry adopted aerosol spray technology developed by the Department of Agriculture for wartime use with bug sprays. This transfer of technology into the beauty business helped make women’s hairstyles such as the beehive and bouffant possible. Although the use of hairspray has declined with the popularity of more “natural” hairstyles, hairspray is now commonly used by both men and women.

Today’s typical hairspray contains polymers (chain-like molecules) in a solvent and sometimes a propellant. After spraying, the solvent evaporates, leaving a stiff layer of the polymers on the hair to hold it in place. The propellant is usually a liquefied gas under pressure that forces the hairspray out of an aerosol can and creates a mist. Sometimes the propellant is also the solvent. Due to health and environmental concerns, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned certain propellants (eg, chlorofluorocarbons and vinyl chloride) from use in hairsprays. An example of a propellant used in hairsprays today is isobutane. Non-aerosol hairsprays, such as pump sprays, do not contain a propellant. A common solvent used in hairsprays is alcohol. While the exact formulations vary by manufacturer, hairsprays often contain essential oils or fragrances, as well as conditioners and silicones.

When used as directed, hairsprays should have very low toxicity. Some hairspray inevitably gets on the skin. Some people may have an allergic reaction to the product — usually a red, itchy rash that’s uncomfortable but not dangerous. Hairspray that gets on your skin should be washed off immediately.

The FDA warns that some hairsprays contain flammable solvents or propellants. These could catch fire if used near an open flame, hot surface, or other ignition source. The user or other people in the vicinity could be injured. A woman who tried to light a cigarette before her hairspray had dried died from burns.

Accidental contact with hairspray is common and includes getting the spray in the eyes, inhaling the fumes or mist, and swallowing hairspray. Small amounts of hairspray can be expected to cause slight redness and soreness in the eyes, which should improve after thorough rinsing. In the unusual situation that the aerosol nozzle was right next to the eye when spraying the can, the force of the spray mist alone could cause injuries. Such an injury must be clarified immediately by an emergency doctor or ophthalmologist.

A research study of hair stylists found that inhaling these products often caused stylists to experience coughing, shortness of breath, sneezing, and wheezing. The most irritating products were bleach powder and hairspray. The study also found that some of the hairdressers had reduced lung function compared to people who did not use these products. So while the occasional inhalation of hairspray should be safe, repeated exposure can have negative health effects.

Accidentally swallowing small amounts of hairspray is usually harmless. The polymers and silicone are non-toxic if ingested; The worrying ingredient is the alcohol. Hairsprays typically contain around 25-50% alcohol. Distilled alcoholic beverages like vodka or whiskey contain around 40% alcohol. Just like with alcoholic beverages, anyone who consumes too much hairspray containing alcohol can become intoxicated. Fortunately, accidental ingestions are usually small amounts and are not expected to cause poisoning. Even if a toddler manages to unscrew the cap of a pump spray bottle, they’re unlikely to take more than a bite or two. Not all ingestion of hairspray is unintentional. Some teens and adults intentionally swallow large amounts of hairspray to get high. This often happens when alcoholic beverages are not available or affordable. The health problems of alcohol abuse are well known. The additional toxicities of ingesting large amounts of the other ingredients in hairspray are less well known.

Another way of abusing hairspray is to inhale the fumes to get high. Inhalation of volatile substances is a major problem in some societies. These substances include liquids such as paint thinner and gasoline, and aerosols such as spray paint and hairspray. The chemicals in these products are breathed into the lungs, absorbed into the bloodstream, and travel to the brain. When the chemicals enter the brain, the user quickly feels “high” but can also develop toxicities such as muscle weakness, violent behavior, seizures, and loss of consciousness. The “high” lasts for only a short time, so users often repeat inhalations several times within a short period of time to stay high. Inhaling aerosols has resulted in sudden death because the heart suddenly stops working properly.

A. I know there are far more troubling questions for a man to ponder than whether or not he should use hairspray, but it’s just as fun to discuss as I think, and not my choice questions, but you!
