How to Adjust a Fascinator
Fascinators are usually worn sideways – if you have a part, wear your fascinator there.
If you have very short hair, the easiest way is to wear a fascinator on a headband.
When fitting fascinators with a comb on, decide where to position the head piece. If you have thick hair, push the comb back through your hair about an inch (in the opposite direction your hair falls) and hold the fascinator at a slight angle to keep your teeth closed on your scalp sense. Then tilt the comb, place the fascinator on your head and push it in the direction your hair falls. The fascinator should then grip.
For fine hair (or extra security), take a small section of hair and comb it in the opposite direction that your hair falls, then grab with a bobby pin. You then have a solid base to slide the fascinator into.
For added security, comb a section of hair before grasping, then spritz with a small amount of hairspray before attaching the headpiece.
The general rule with matching combs is to slide them back on themselves to create an abrasive surface that will GRIP!
Wash your hair the day before you are going to wear your fascinator, not the day before. This helps keep it in place.

The most important thing is that you stay true to yourself and that you feel like you on the big day. Don’t think you have to wear something just because someone else tells you when it really isn’t for you… Friends can offer great advice on such occasions, but always be aware when they are imposing their taste on you and you and don’t consider your tastes. The most important thing is to feel comfortable!
hat or dress first? Again, there is no right or wrong place to start. However, if you have an awkward body shape or particularly want a statement or patterned dress, it may be best to buy the dress first so your hat can be designed to complement the outfit. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time – a clumsy colored dress or an overly flashy dress will severely limit your options for off the shelf headwear. However, accessories can make an outfit, so sometimes the simplest dress with a statement hat, the right shoes and the right bag can say more than a patterned dress. Too much going on can sometimes be distracting.
Color Matching: There’s such a thing as over-matching! Sometimes you have to decide whether you want your hat or dress to be your statement, as too much of either can be a recipe for disaster. Color matching the exact same tone for your hat, dress, bag, and shoes can be overkill, and while it all goes together perfectly, it can make an otherwise interesting outfit seem rather dull and boring. Even if you are looking for a completely monochromatic look, the different materials of your dress, hat and shoes will never be exactly the same as they are made of completely different fiber compositions and all color differently. An accent color can be beautiful, or if you’re not so bold, simply different shades of the same color add depth, vibrancy, and interest to an outfit.
Hat Styles: There are many shapes and styles to suit all face shapes, builds and personalities. At Beverley Edmondson Millinery we don’t believe very much in the “rules” that hats shouldn’t be wider than your shoulders and you should wear a round hat with a round face. Most hats will fit anyone, as long as you wear the hat, stand up straight, shoulders back, put on a smile, and believe you can wear the hat! Have you ever wondered why some people look great in all hats? That’s because they rely on wearing hats.
With that said, not everyone is going to be comfortable all the time, so it’s our job to find you a style that makes you smile, stand tall, and feel confident. Some things to keep in mind are: if you are short, a brim or trim that swings up to give you the illusion of height will prevent you from getting lost under a hat, while if you are tall, something wider can be more flattering. On the wedding day, you are expected to greet and kiss the guests. So consider whether you need something that sits on one side so you can offer an available cheek to kiss, or would you appreciate a brim that makes it difficult for you to reach out to people and keep them at a distance!
If you keep your hat on during meals, will you prevent anyone by your side from joining in the conversation, or will you end up tickling their face with a feather? In general, we don’t think these things are necessarily a bad thing. At the end of the day, if someone else knocks on your hat, at least that’s a topic of conversation!
Shoes and handbags: Shoes, bag and hat don’t all have to match, as long as your outfit harmonizes as a whole, all three can be different colors if desired. Often we recommend that two items in one color are enough to coordinate, again you can match one on top of the other! Bags are often left on a bench or under a table, so when a tint color works just as well, it’s worth considering how much attention you need to pay to the exact color. If the wedding is at your home or at a hotel you’re staying at, do you really need a bag?
However, bags can be lovely props when photos are being taken, or give you something to do with your hands when you’re nervous and fidgety, and store tissues for those tearful moments. Finding a shoe in the right colour, style and fit can be a nightmare as many people settle for two of the three.

Going for something very contemporary can go out of style…think ’80s shoulder pads and Princess Diana’s wedding dress. But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong; The event is happening at a specific time, so why not dress for the time? As I always say… in 20 years what would you like to see in that photo on the mantelpiece? At the end of the day, this will be the only lasting part of what you choose to wear, other than the wonderful memories of the wedding day itself.

How long do you keep a hat on? The tradition is that everyone should keep their hats on until the mother of the bride takes hers off… so if you’re the mother of the bride, do what you will! It’s really to each his own. We strive to make all of our hats, hatters and fascinators as comfortable as possible (the bigger and heavier the style, the harder this is as we always struggle with gravity!).
So if you want to leave your hat on well into the night, do it! If it’s a spring wedding, hats can be designed to be worn with a coat so they’re perfect for the ceremony and photos outside, but may not work if you’re inside at the reception and the coat is removed. In these situations we can make a small fascinator that complements your outfit, is easy to wear and continues your desired look into the evening. Ultimately, it’s up to you, but no one will be angry if you take off your hat after the ceremony, after breakfast, or just before bed!
Why not take the opportunity to wear a hat or fascinator and keep it on for as long as possible! Don’t worry, etiquette says women should only wear hats indoors before 6pm and men should never wear hats indoors!

During the consultation we will go through the shapes and styles, narrowing down using your input and our expertise, from there we will work on colors and trimmings until you are happy with everything from the head fit to the final quote.
For made to order hats and fascinators we ask for a minimum lead time of 6 weeks but where possible longer lead times are appreciated and will allow you to have your piece ready and safe at home well in advance of the event. All of the hats in the boutique can be bought off the shelf and taken away immediately, although many pieces can be tweaked and edited in the shop or given a secondary color at short notice to make them work for you if there isn’t enough lead time for custom orders. So don’t panic if time is short!
Once your hat is ready we invite you back to the store to try it on and make sure you are happy with everything. Once you are satisfied you can take it away, otherwise any changes or adjustments will be made until you are completely satisfied with your order.

“What makes it a fascinator is the focus on a trim,” says Gretchen Fenston, a New York City milliner and Condé Nast archivist. “The base is usually imperceptible. All you see is horsehair or veils or tulle or feathers or flowers.” It’s the disguise without the hat.

John, whose Mr. John label was a household name on par with Christian Dior. “What happened,” says the incomparable Stephen Jones, a British milliner with outlandish poetry, “was in the early ’60s when Mr. John in New York was making hats he called ‘fascinators’ on top of your beehive. In America in the 1950s, small hats were called clip hats or half hats, but “fascinator” sounds much more enticing. It was a very clever marketing ploy by Mr. John.”
