“I don’t like to overly moisturize my hands, I just do it when I feel they need it. I usually put it on after a bath or shower and always after swimming. It depends on the seasons, in winter your hands get moisture drier because of the central heating and the cold weather, so I’ll moisturize them more then and take a little hand cream with me when I’m out.

“Before a shoot I use a scrub on my nails to just refresh them, it cleans them and makes them whiter. It is good for yellowed, dirty nails or to remove paint. i use this . If people want to make their own hand scrubs you can use castor sugar and any type of oil, rose, almond, coconut. If you’re really desperate, you can even use olive oil or something. ”

“I suffer quite a bit from ‘hanging nails’, which is a tough piece of skin/cuticle that grows next to the fingernail. I clip them back as close to the nail as possible and then use something like CND Solar Oil, Leighton Denny Cuticle Oil or Almond Oil to condition the cuticles. The result? It’s like the hanging nail never existed.”

“Fortunately I have a dishwasher so washing up is not a big problem. However I would never wash pans or clean without gloves, they may not be the prettiest things to wear but they are great for your hands and nails.”

“As hand models, we just don’t have shellac. Manicurists have said to me, ‘I can remove it as safely as possible.’ It will still never be as safe as not having it. Since our nails are our livelihood, we simply cannot afford to damage them even slightly.

Nina Taylor has spent the last two decades modeling her hands for some of the biggest brands in the world.

The UK-based model started when she was enrolled at university and has since carved her way to the top of the competitive industry, working with the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Karlie Kloss. She’s even known as “One-Take Nina” among her peers, as she’s able to get the job done with just one shot of the camera.

Insider recently spoke to Taylor about her career, what it takes to break into the industry, and the artistry of hand modeling.

Speaking to Insider, Taylor said she “never thought” she could make a career out of her hands, but was inspired one day by her cousin.

“She’s only a few years older than me — she wasn’t in the business,” Taylor said of her cousin. “I don’t know how she found out about it. She was basically just complimenting my hands and saying, ‘I wish I had your hands! Straight fingers, even skin tone, those nail beds.’”

“She’s said it over and over again,” she continued. “At one point I thought, ‘Wait a minute, maybe there’s something to it.'”

At the time, Taylor was enrolled at university, where she had received a photocopied list of top modeling agencies from other students.

“No one would ever dream of ever calling her — it was just a dream — but I had that list,” Taylor said. “I remember coming across an agency fourth on the list, which happened to be the top agency at the time. I called from my parents bedroom phone and they invited me to their central London office for an interview.”

The interview went much better than Taylor expected. She left with an embossed portfolio and confirmation that the agency was willing to work with her.

“I walked out there and I was like, ‘I’m a model! It’s amazing!’” she said. “But of course I haven’t worked in ages because other models were so much more established than me.”

According to Taylor, many aspiring hand models struggle with rejection and “give up at the first few hurdles.” When she first started, however, she took a very different approach.

Still, Taylor says there’s “a whole different aspect to this industry and it makes a success out of it,” which comes from experience. For example, when shooting photo campaigns, Taylor says you have to be able to “hold still” and “move millimeters.” TV shoots require more movement, according to Taylor, while beauty campaigns are also complicated.

“Whatever it is, you have to remember you have about 100 people watching you,” Taylor said. “It’s up to you to make sure none of these people are working overtime and costing the producer tens of thousands of pounds, so you want to do the job right.”

“People forget that as a hand model, all they want is your hands,” she continued. “So what happens to the rest of the body? What’s happening to your head? What if your head reflects a shiny object you’re modeling or interacting with?”

“Not only do you have to be in those awkward positions and make sure your body isn’t in the way, but you also have to be able to move your arm smoothly and in control,” she said. “You have to become an expert on everything else that’s around you — not just putting on a little bit of nail polish or whatever. “What a hand model does — which I would do — is moisturize about twenty or thirty times a day,” Taylor said. “It’s standard. Using a nail oil is also standard.”

And while many assume Taylor spends much of her free time at a nail salon, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“I will never go to a salon and get my nails done,” she said. “I wouldn’t dream of that. I only work with the top nail techs on set because they understand what it’s like working with hand models who have their nails done all the time.”

“A client who goes to a salon hasn’t touched their nails and hands for a week or two, and they need a full blown manicure,” she continued. “I don’t do it because I take care of it every day. I work on my cuticles and I use hand scrubs to remove any dead skin cells that can get stuck on the skin and look dull and gray.”

As a hand model, Taylor isn’t always recognized for her work. While some might see that as a disadvantage of the job, Taylor actually sees it as an advantage.

“People always ask me, ‘Don’t you feel bad that it’s not your face?'” Taylor said. “The thing is, I don’t sculpt my face and if I did I probably wouldn’t make a lot of money doing it. I wouldn’t be called a supermodel while I’m a hand model.”

“I’ve been very fortunate to work with the crème de la crème of the photography and film world,” she continued. “You work with the top level of people who just do covers and Vogue and all the big stars – and you’re kind of there. For some reason you find yourself in that zone when you work with these incredible people.”

Taylor says she’s “very proud” of the hand modeling industry and would like to “take the freak show aspect out of it.” Instead, she prefers to focus on the artistry of hand modeling.

“I’m happy to try to explain that this isn’t just a flash in the pan — it’s a real career,” Taylor said of hand modeling. “I’ve been involved in multi-billion dollar campaigns throughout my career. What I do is part of this huge world of advertising, building and ultimately selling.”

She added, “I have my own column, I’m a brand ambassador, I’m a beauty judge, and that’s where hand modeling can take you in this industry.”
