After popular public demand, Apple finally introduced multiracial emoji icons (but no redheads — sorry, folks) in its latest iOS update. But there are still times when you can’t find the perfect emoji to express yourself. Instead of waiting for the next (probably far away) emoji update from Apple, it’s time to start creating your own emoji.

With imoji, a free app for iOS and Android, you can turn any picture – even one you’ve downloaded from the internet – into a custom emoji to share with your friends via MMS.

Step 1: Choose your image

Open the Imoji app and tap the plus sign to add a new “Imoji” (emoji) or “Artmoji” (an image with emoji stamps). Tap on “Imoji” and the camera will open. If you want to use a spontaneous photo as emoji, take a photo with the camera and make sure that the emoji subject (e.g. your face) stays inside the dotted oval.

If you want to use an existing photo from your camera roll as emoji, tap Photos in the lower-left corner to choose an image. Move and scale the image as needed to ensure the emoji subject is completely within the dotted oval, then tap the arrow.

As the official name suggests, 😏 Smirking Face represents the facial expression of a smirk. It is used to communicate a range of feelings including complacency, self-confidence, self-indulgence, mischief, cheeky humor, and general contentment. 😏 However, grinning face mainly implies flirtation and sexual innuendos.

😏 Smirking Face was popularly debuted in 2010 with its approval under Unicode 6.0. However, Apple included the emoji in its initial implementation of emoji support as part of iPhone OS 2.2 in 2008, albeit on a limited basis in Japan.

As we’ve seen, 😏 Smirking Face is commonly used to communicate a range of feelings. Emoji can be just what we need to crack a joke or spice up a banter, but its ambiguity can lead to some awkwardness.

When using 😏 Grinning Face, pay special attention to its negative and suggestive connotations, especially since its appearance varies by platform. One person might see 😏 Grinning Face as an innocent smile or a friendly wink, while another might interpret it as conceited, dismissive, or even suggestive.

The smiley face emoji is a classic, at least as far as the internet is concerned.

It originated in 1993 in Unicode 1.1 as ☺, which is called white smiling face not because of skin color but because of its white background, as opposed to ☻ or black smiling face. Internet users sometimes still use ☺ to be retro, and older platforms can automatically generate ☺ when you type the smiley emoticon, :).

The white smiling face emoji evolved into the yellow face smiley we know today in the 2000s and was released in 2010 under Unicode 6.0. Not sure if this is an international experience or just something we do over here in Old Blighty, but in the UK we love putting a kiss at the end of a text message. Do they do that somewhere else? I do not know. But putting an “x” at the end of a message means a kiss. So, when your gamer girl/guy sends you 18 little crosses, what exactly does that mean? Here’s a simple guide to kissing.

This can mean one of three things. However, some people are exceptionally busy, and when that is the case, the xs are sometimes accidentally replaced with cs. Mainly because they are next to each other on the keyboard. So, roughly translated, this means that your other half loves you, but she’s busy.

A single C might be the worst “kiss” you can get. First, it means they don’t really like you and are just being polite, but it also means they didn’t even care enough about you to quickly read their message to make sure it was spelled correctly.
