‘Help is in Your Hands’ — A great resource for families with young kids on the autism spectrum!
Help is in Your Hands is an excellent new resource for families with young children with symptoms or diagnoses on the autism spectrum, as well as early intervention providers. It is a free website with 16 web-based video modules designed to help parents incorporate simple intervention practices into their daily lives at home. It also offers several webinars for providers to coach parents to support their young children with autism or with social communication problems. Child plays with provider
Sally Rogers and Aubyn Stahmer, both clinical psychologists and faculty members at the UC Davis Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the UC Davis MIND Institute, developed these modules based on their outstanding research on how parents and parenting coaches use the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) use effectively). ESDM, developed by Sally Rogers and Geraldine Dawson, is a Naturalistic Developmental Behavior Intervention (NDBI) to help children with autism connect, communicate, and learn through a variety of activities and play practices.
“Families with a child who has been diagnosed with autism or is at risk should take comfort in knowing that early treatments like ESDM are now widely available and making a difference,” Rogers said. “At ESDM, we focus on the learning opportunities that exist in social interactions between children and adults in everyday life to accelerate children’s learning
Interactive online resource for parents and providers
The website features videos of very young children with autism and their parents engaging in purposeful ways at home with everyday routines that embody ESDM practices. For example, one module focuses on drawing children’s attention to people by placing people “face to face and close enough to touch” with toys or objects between the child and the adult. Simple but important strategies like these are shared in the video lessons to enhance children’s learning opportunities in everyday parent-child interactions.
The site also includes materials for early interventionists who are not autism experts and who wish to support families with young children with social communication difficulties they work with through evidence-based practices. The program provides handouts and videos for families and tools for providers to track the progress of parents and children as they work with their providers using those tools.
“This resource will support families and early providers who do not have access to training in evidence-based interventions,” Stahmer said. “They can access these resources anytime, anywhere, whatever works for them!”
All Help is in Your Hands modules are accessible via smartphones, tablets and computers. The materials for this online resource were originally created to support low-income families through a US Department of Education grant (grant R324A150211).
