Why do you cross horse blanket straps?
Leg straps can be dangerous if the horse lies down and a hock gets caught in them. So, adjust them to cross through each other and hang about six inches above the hock. 1. The strap
Broncos rage over a tight belt around the flank. When you undo the front buckle of a sheet or blanket, the horse reacts involuntarily. The skin on the withers trembles, pushing back the clothes. At this point straps that have been fitted with a lot of slack meet the bulk of the barrel and become a buckle strap. There is NO WARNING. The horse becomes blind ballistic. I’ve known them to run through tied tent flaps, through a wooden wall, and even into a pool to drown. In earnest. This is very serious and quick.
2. Determination of comfort
If a horse sweats in his clothes, he is likely to develop colic. Therefore, determining a horse’s warmth is crucial. All horses are different. Stallions tend to overheat, mares can be unstable. First feel his ears. If they are cold, the horse is already frozen through. It’s good when the chest and shoulder are roasted but not clammy. Also check the kidneys across the flank. Other ways to reduce rubbing include: keeping horses clean, using a shampoo that does not remove oil, using plenty of curry to bring out protective oils, and not fastening the lower chest buckle. However, you need to be very careful with the latter. If the stitching of the top buckle is damaged, don’t risk it. It’s not worth letting go in front. A bib can take a little pressure off your shoulders and keep your chest nice and warm.
8. Wash
Try to use the same detergent. So if there’s a skin problem, you know it’s not the soap. It’s always a good idea to give things that get on horse skins a double rinse.
9. Consistency
Not all horses are covered. Whatever you do, be thoughtful. When you cut, you have to dress. Adapt to the weather of the day. When dressing your horses, make it a routine. Don’t get lazy and let your horse suffer. be alert. Ask for help when you need it.

You told us you live north of Seattle where winters are wet but not that cold, with average lows in the 30’s. While your clipped horse is living outside in a shabby stable, he should be fine with a good turnout blanket and inner layer (see Blanketing Guide temperature chart). The exception might be if you want this neck cover for maintenance reasons, but in mild winter climates it’s overkill.
Also, we don’t like the idea of a horse being displayed in a hood. There are too many ways he can hang all those straps and buckles on things. If his enclosure contains an electric fence, he can start pushing his way through right away. A stretchy face covering added to the mix can pull over his eyes, effectively blinding him.
A better strategy might be to make a trail clip that leaves some of the neck and body hair behind and pair it with a high neck blanket that has a snug neck/chest closure like the Rambo Wug (www.horsewareireland. com ) or TurtleNeck Ice Turtle (www.turtleneckinfo.com).
If you really want to stick with one neck cover, use a system where the cover and blanket are the same model and manufacturer to ensure stability. Groom and wash the mane regularly (easier said than done in winter) to keep it free of dirt and scabs and spray with Show Sheen before replacing the neck cover.

The front of the rug should sit approximately 2-4 inches in front of the withers so it doesn’t apply unnecessary pressure or rub and cause sores. You should also be able to fit your hand down the front of the rug; if not, it is too tight and will restrict your horse’s movement.

One size bigger or smaller?
If your horse is between sizes, unless your horse is particularly petite or narrow-chested, it is generally better to go larger than smaller. When choosing a rug for your horse, the build and shape of the horse should be considered; A broad and stocky horse may need to go up a size to accommodate its width, a very narrow and fine horse may need to go down a size, and a horse with large shoulders may need a gusset for freedom of movement.

The blanket should reach the tail end when the horse is grazing with its head down. If the blanket doesn’t reach the tail, it’s too small and doesn’t provide the protection your horse needs; This is especially important with a turnout rug as horses turn their backs on inclement weather and you don’t want your horse getting a cold and wet bottom! If the rug hangs over your horse’s tail, it is too big and could cause injury.
Step 3 – Check the straps and straps
