The Hot Shot is one such multi-layered drink, an Italian-inspired caffeinated concoction.
The Hot Shot relies primarily on the quality of its espresso. Using pre-ground, store-bought coffee beans will not result in the best-tasting version of the beverage. Instead, it’s best to buy from a local coffee shop or roaster and grind the beans yourself. It’s also not advisable to buy an espresso shot from a coffee shop and use it to make the drink, as it will quickly lose, let alone, its crema its sharpness. However, if you don’t have an espresso machine but still want to prepare the hot shot, you should hurry. And order your espresso as close as possible to the preparation of the drink.
The only liqueur in the Hot Shot is Galliano, an Italian herbal liqueur with strong notes of aniseed and vanilla. In the late 1990’s I remember the packaging for Galliano bottles sold in my London shop including a hot shot glass and spoon to make layering the ingredients easier. At parties in Sweden it was common for guests to shout “Hot shot, hot shot, hot shot!”
