There are many variations and protocols for performing an effective stone massage. There are also many opinions about important basic facts to offer safe treatment. My many years of experience teaching hot stone massage gives me the opportunity to express my opinion.

The temperature of the water is one of the key factors for a safe stone massage. Not only is this extremely important for the safety of the client, but also because stone massage entails more insurance claims than any other modality. The therapist should be able to handle the stones with her hands and not burn them. The stones should be at a temperature that is comfortable for the customer and if handled properly they will not burn.

Also, the therapist should be able to reach into the water with her hands to retrieve the stones. If the stones are too hot for the therapist to hold, then they are also too hot to apply to the client. Time should be spent massaging the client, not retrieving stones, so no extra time should be spent using a fishnet, spoon, or gloves.

At Nature’s Stones we recommend working at a temperature between 120 degrees Fahrenheit and 130 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the modality and the condition or age of the client. In general, the best temperature for a full-body hot stone treatment is between 127 degrees Fahrenheit and 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If working below 127 degrees Fahrenheit, give a “warm” stone massage, not a hot stone massage; Therefore, the massage is not as effective. Massaging with stones heated to a temperature greater than 130 degrees Fahrenheit is too hot for the therapist to safely handle.

If it is necessary for a therapist to use rubber-insulated gloves to retrieve hot stones, then the water is too hot. Using insulated gloves is not good practice for three reasons:

Performing a hot stone massage:

Place your 5 stones in your crockpot of heated water. Have your participant lie face down on a table or bed. Make sure you have access to his entire back and arms. Starting at the neck below the occiput, place the flat side of the stone on either side of the spine (NEVER directly on the spine), begin applying pressure and move down either side of the spine to the sacrum. Once you reach the sacrum, move outward along the hip bones and then draw your stones along the side of the body and back to the starting point at the base of the neck. Our next move starts by turning the bricks sideways so we can use the edge of the brick. Start just above the sacrum with the edge of the stones on either side of the spine. Apply pressure straight down, moving the stones outward from the side of the spine in small movements. Continue this movement up your back until you reach the base of your neck. This works the erector spinae. While you still have the stones in this position, our next step begins by placing the edge of the stone along the outside of the shoulder blades. Starting below the shoulder blade, apply outward pressure in small, even movements, moving along the outside edge of the bone. Repeat this movement, only this time inwards towards the shoulder blades. Be sure to move around the entire shoulder blade. Turn your stones flat again and place them on the shoulder blade. Using light pressure, move the flat stones over the bones in a circular motion. After that, begin moving the flat stones onto the arms, moving down the back of the arms, raising slightly above the elbow joint (ALWAYS apply light pressure to the joints), down the forearm and end in hand. Bring the stones back up the arms and end at the base of the neck.

If your stones get too hot, turn them over to the other side and continue massaging. When they get cold, put them back in the water and get your other two heated stones. Please check with your participant about the pressure and temperature of the stones during the massage.

Repeat these movements as often as needed to relieve stress and tension, release tight muscles, and encourage a deeper sense of relaxation.

Place rocks 5 to 10 inches from the campfire, depending on the size and strength of the fire. Turn them every now and then to make sure the center gets heated from all sides. When rocks are just too hot to touch, you know the center is being heated to the extent necessary. It should take about 1.5 hours for them to be fully heated. Pull the socks over your hand and reach to your toes. Grab the bricks, flip and wrap the socks. Place them wherever you like: 4 of them on each corner or all in the middle of your tent, around your sleeping bag or even inside your sleeping bag if you are comfortable with that, just like boiling water.

2- Prepare a hot water bottle

This works best if you plan to sleep in a sleeping bag.
