Imperial units[ edit ]

In imperial units, the foot has been defined as 1/3 yard, realizing the yard as a physical standard (separate from the standard meter). The shipyard standards of the various Commonwealth countries were regularly compared.[24] The value of the shipyard’s UK primary standard was set in meters by the National Physical Laboratory in 1964 at 0.9143969 m, implying a pre-1959 UK ft of 0.3047990 m.

The UK introduced international shipyard for all purposes by the Weights and Measures Act 1963, which came into force on 1 January 1964.[26]

When the international foot was defined in 1959, much census data based on the earlier definitions was already available, particularly in the United States and India. In 1799 the meter became the official unit of length in France. Almost every country in the world uses the metric system as its official system of weights and measures. Where did the mile come from?

According to Mental Floss, the modern mile has its origins in Roman antiquity. The term “mile” is derived from the Latin mille passum and means “a thousand steps”. A step in Roman times was the length of five human feet lined up from toe to heel. Romans happened to be slightly smaller than modern humans, so 5,000 Roman “feet” would equal about 4,850 modern human “feet.” This means that the entire road system of the Roman Empire (over 250,000 kilometers of roads) consists of over 1.25 billion “feet”. But that’s not the only contribution the Romans made to American life.

How did it become 5,280 feet?

While the basis of this measurement was Roman, the jump of 280 feet was clearly British. In 1592 Parliament wished to unify the measure of the mile and ruled that it should be eight furlongs. Furlongs, still used as a unit of measurement in horse racing, are 660 feet long. 660 times eight equals, you guessed it, 5,280.

Blankets for standard size mattresses

Many blankets are designed to specifically hang over one of the standard mattress sizes. The exact size of the quilt can vary, although it’s usually at least a few inches wider and longer than the appropriate bed size.

Double duvets are 85 x 90 inches and as the title suggests, they work on full (double) mattresses.

Queen blankets measure 90 x 90-100 inches. They fit best on a queen-size mattress, but you can get away with queen-size comforters on a king-size bed or a king-size skinny bed if needed.

king

King size blankets are the largest sizes, measuring 108 x 90-100 inches. They fit best on a standard king bed and a California (western) king bed. On the longer end, if you’re putting on a California king-size mattress, look for a king-size comforter, since California king beds are four inches longer than your standard king bed.

The layered look

Two plaids together result in a cozy layered look. A finer knit or weave often works well as a primary base layer, while a coarser knit adds texture and warmth. We love the simplicity of moss stitch as a base, layered with chunky ribbing, chunky cables or chunky boxes folded at the end of the bed.
