Episode 173: Tiffany Jenkins on Mental Health and Addiction
This week I have an incredible and inspiring interview with Tiffany Jenkins. Tiffany is a wife, mother, author, content creator and recovering addict. She is the face behind Juggling the Jenkins and the author of High Achiever: The Incredible True Story of One Addicts Double Life.
Meet Tiffany Jenkins
Tiffany begins by telling us a little bit about her life, where she grew up, where she’s from and what her family circumstances were. Her mother was a bartender and her father moved furniture. Her father had substance abuse problems and her mother divorced him when Tiffany was 7 and married a police officer who they both moved in with when she was about 9 years old.
Tiffany describes how she and her sister grew up as latchkey kids, spending a lot of time alone and having no one around to tell her when to eat, when to do her homework, etc. Because of this, Tiffany started gaining weight and became constant smiled at. During this time, Tiffany describes how she began developing a sense of humor and making fun of herself from a young age. “I realized that no guys wanted to date me, no one wanted to be my boyfriend” – Once she started making people laugh, they started to be attracted to her.
Tiffany talks about how, looking back, she can see that her parents unwittingly neglected something growing up. She gives some examples and describes how many unanswered questions she left behind due to the death of both of her parents, which means she can no longer ask them about their childhood. Tiffany goes on to talk a little bit about her relationship with her parents, how she was a very defiant child who suffered from anxiety and depression. At age 12, she went to her mother, who was doing her best with Tiffany and her sister, for counseling. She saw her father less often, but when she did it was usually in a bar surrounded by people drinking and partying – she was exposed to this from a young age and knew little else – it became the norm.
high school life
Tiffany talks about how things got better when she went to high school. She started exercising, lost weight, joined the cheerleading team, and grew in popularity. On the outside, everything seemed perfect, but Tiffany constantly put on a show. Inside, she still felt like that “weird, overweight, nerdy kid.” Still, she thrived in her senior year — she hadn’t smoked a cigarette, skipped school, or done anything to break the rules.
Everything changed for Tiffany one day after a high school basketball game when someone offered her a sip of alcohol. It wasn’t unusual, but Tiffany had always refused. But for some reason that night she said yes and accepted. “That sip of alcohol changed my life forever.” Tiffany describes how, for the first time in her life, she didn’t feel out of place — she didn’t worry about anything and loved the feeling of numbness so much that she started to feel it to hunt. We talk more about the anxiety and depression that Tiffany had experienced for so long and how much relief that feeling of numbness brought. She had never known how to talk about the dark thoughts and feelings she was having and was holding them back. The numbness made it go away.
Three months later, Tiffany dropped out of school. During that time, alcohol evolved into marijuana, but never beyond. Tiffany opens up about how many of the people she started drinking and smoking with had already graduated and she wanted to be with them — she wanted to be somewhere other than school. After three months of skipping school and working with the system, she dropped out altogether, and around that time she found opiates – prescription painkillers. She describes how her life changed during this time, how the people she surrounded herself were a bad influence, and how she came to be addicted to opiates. She had a stereotypical view of an addict and never thought she would become one – it started out as fun and another way for her to feel numb.
And then the fun stops
In the midst of addiction
Tiffany goes on to talk about the moment when it went from fun to a way to stop the pain. She woke up in agony and realized it was because she hadn’t taken any drugs that day. As soon as she took a pill, the pain stopped – she had become physically and psychologically dependent on opiates. She describes what life was like, how the drugs became more and more difficult to obtain and more and more expensive, which finally caused her to switch.
Tiffany initiates this by delving more deeply into the events leading up to the switch. She tells how her mother was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 23 and died 5 months later at the age of just 46. After that, Tiffany went to rehab, but not because she wanted to, but because she felt she should. The night she left rehab, she suffered an alcohol relapse. In her eyes, the problem was the pill, not her, so alcohol was fine. Shortly thereafter, Tiffany began dating a cop – she says how much he accepted her past and how for a time she thought she’d found just what she needed. Unfortunately, after about 3 months of their relationship, she relapsed and went back on the pills.
Tiffany’s double life
Tiffany explains how she thought her boyfriend would tell right away just by looking into her eyes. But he did not do it. That’s when she realized she could have the best of both worlds. She could have fun on the side while keeping up appearances in her relationship. Tiffany ended up hiding her addiction from him for two and a half years. During this time the addiction intensified and she began injecting pills when the original drug became more difficult to obtain. She describes how she then became addicted to injections and the effort she went to to hide the truth. She was so scared of losing her boyfriend and the life they had that there was no limit to what she would do to hide her addiction. We talk about it at length and Tiffany tells us that she kept this secret for over 2 years and how it became increasingly difficult to tell the truth. Through fear and desperation, she continued to consume in all aspects of her life. She could not express herself or function properly without taking more pills. We also talk about how Tiffany’s addiction came at a crucial developmental stage in life and how that further complicated things. In her words, her brain only had three stops – get money – get drugs – get high. This became her focus every day and she never had time to learn everyday skills. She only had one focus in life.
Tiffany talks about how it escalated and escalated until everything started to crumble and she was arrested at her home. She began selling personal items and things from her home — which included taking her boyfriend’s guns and selling them. Eventually she was arrested by friends she knew from the force and charged with around 28 felonies. Tiffany opens up and talks at length about this part of her life. She tried to lie through it, but the police didn’t believe her. So her only option was to tell the truth.
The truth is out
Tiffany describes what happened after she admitted the truth, where she was with her addiction, and how she knew she was addicted. However, she still didn’t understand her addiction. She spent 120 days in prison and most of the time she got out with an “I’ll just drink beer and be a good person” attitude. In prison, the judge received a letter with a request to give her rehab. The judge offered Tiffany the choice and she entered rehab, where she learned the truth about her addiction and set out on the road to recovery. Here she learned that the problem was herself and her personality. She had to work on herself and avoid the aspects that would send her into a downward spiral.
While Tiffany doesn’t believe you have to hit rock bottom like her before you can move on, she does believe that you have to get to a point where you realize no one’s coming to save you and it’s on you To Save Yourself – You realize that enough is enough, and that’s when you’re ready to hear the message. In her case, she feels that if she hadn’t been caught, she would have gone into battle. But if things had been different and she had been thrown out onto the street without being able to turn around, she might have sought help. We’ll talk about that in detail.
Family Advice by Tiffany Jenkins
Tiffany offers some advice for family and friends who are on the sidelines of someone going through an addiction and may not be ready to change. “Loving an addict is the hardest thing most people ever have to go through.” Tiffany suggests learning the difference between loving and enabling because there’s a very fine line, and if you don’t walk that line, you might “Love” your addict to death. This goes back to what Tiffany talks about in relation to addicts having to realize that no one is coming to save them and they have to save themselves. This could potentially mean seeing your loved ones homeless on the streets with no support, but this could be what they need to see to help themselves. “If you do anything that enables your addict to live the addictive lifestyle a moment longer, it empowers them,” i.e., you enable them to continue their addiction.
If an addict is happy with you, you’re likely to empower them, and if they’re mad at you, you’re likely trying to save their life.
Tiffany recommends nar-anon.org, a website designed specifically for families of addicts. They have support groups, counseling and community groups where you can seek help and advice. We talk about how difficult it is for families, but how it is possible to love an addict without giving anything. It’s not an easy road, but it’s worth delivering the message of love and support to an addict, whether they’re willing to hear it or not, because eventually they will remember that message. However, Tiffany explains the importance of protecting yourself or you’ll drown with your addict. In her case, there was nothing her family could say to stop her addiction, she was distraught and “would have preferred death to rehab any day”. In these circumstances, there is little family that can do but deliver this message of love and assurance that you will be there when they are ready to accept help.
Life after addiction for Tiffany
Tiffany speaks more about her rehab journey, as she wanted to do it for herself this time and although she occasionally wanted to give up, persevered and came out the other side. She found friendship with a very strong woman and learned to talk about her thoughts and feelings, especially when she felt like giving up. After 6 months she moved to a transition home where she began learning life skills she had never learned before. Within two months she had met a boy in the transition home and then got pregnant. This motivated her to work hard and change her life. After 5 months of knowing her boyfriend, they got married. Tiffany gave birth to her son on her birthday and became pregnant with her daughter 6 months later. Shortly after their daughter was born, her husband’s daughter from a previous relationship moved in with them, and in a short time Tiffany became a married woman with three children to care for. She had to adjust to this new life of sobriety and being a mom, and then she started writing and making videos and it’s been on the rise ever since.
Tiffany has not used anything since November 26, 2012.
Juggle the Jenkins
Tiffany talks about giving birth to Juggling the Jenkins! As she began to love and appreciate herself again, she looked at things she enjoyed. After the birth of her daughter, Tiffany suffered from postpartum depression and writing became an outlet for her. So she started sharing things that were very close to her and people started reaching out and Tiffany realized there were other people like her. For the first time in her life, she didn’t feel all the things she’d always been ashamed of, but not because of the drugs…because she shared her truth and wasn’t alone. This spurred her passion to continue and she started making videos just for fun…this picked up speed and in the last 2 years Tiffany has gained millions of followers and found a place in the hearts of many. Tiffany talks more about her history with Juggling the Jenkins, including the release of her book, High Achiever: The Incredible True Story of One Addicts Double Life.
Tiffany concludes by talking about what she has learned about humanity through her life and work with Juggling the Jenkins and that there are more people than she ever realized who are open, kind and loving – she talks about it how she learned the power of empathy and how there are so many people on the internet who open their hearts and minds to new perspectives and that was a gift to learn. Tiffany gives a final message of inspiration and love – there is life after addiction and it is possible to move forward. Don’t give up and get help.
