How to create a PlayStation account on a computer

PlayStation Network (PSN) is a digital entertainment service for your PlayStation. With a PSN account, you can download games to play and stream apps to watch TV and movies. To create an account on your PC:

Open a browser on your computer and go to the Sony Entertainment Network Create New Account page. Enter your personal information such as email address, date of birth, and location information, then choose a password. Select I agree. Create my account. Once you create your PSN Online ID, it cannot be changed in the future. It is forever associated with the email address you used to create the PSN account. Confirm your email address using the link in the email Sony will send you after completing the previous step. Go back to the Sony Entertainment Network website and select Next. On the next page, select the Update Account screen. Choose the online ID that others see when you play online games. Select Next. Finish updating your PlayStation Network account with your name, security questions, location information and optional billing information by clicking Next after each screen. If you’ve already played everything you want to play on the PS3, consider yourself lucky. Sony’s system from two generations of consoles ago still has an excellent library of games. But you’d never know given how many hoops you have to jump through before you can access it. After letting my PS3 gather dust over the past few years, I decided it was time to give the console another spin. After an hour of grappling with the archaic UI and arcane restrictions and barely defeating them, I almost wish I hadn’t.

There are still many worthwhile games to buy for the PS3. And if you can’t find them at a used games store or on eBay, buying them digitally is still technically an option. But if you do go down this route, expect plenty of frustration along the way.

A stay of execution

Longtime Tom’s Guide readers may recall that there was a lot going on around the PS3’s online store last year. Sony threatened to shut down the whole thing because the company wanted to focus more attention on selling PS4 and PS5 games. After a month of fan backlash, Sony agreed to continue operating the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, even though the PSP’s online store was (mostly) doomed.

The only problem is that those outdated console memories required some compromises to stay afloat. Unlike the PS4 and PS5, buying games on the PS3 has a number of inconvenient limitations:

You must purchase games through the console itself, not through a web browser

You must preload the required funds into your account

You can only download a game from its store listing, not through a web browser or app

This may not sound like a huge inconvenience. If the PlayStation Store worked perfectly on the PS3, they wouldn’t be. But each step of the process merges into itself to create a whirlpool of inconveniences that drags a five-minute process into an hour-long odyssey.

The setup for my story is simple. I don’t have anything urgent to play at the moment and have been slowly but surely working my way through the excellent Yakuza series. While most of these games are available on modern consoles, the shady spinoff Yakuza: Dead Souls is relegated to the PS3. It’s not meant to be a great game, but I’m invested enough in the franchise to see what it has to offer. With physical copies of the game available on eBay for over $80, the $20 digital copy looked much more enticing.

In hindsight I should have foreseen that this was going to be a difficult process as I booted up my PS3 and found the PlayStation Store would not load. I discovered that this was due to my system’s clock being set to the wrong time as the PS3 does not automatically adjust for Daylight Saving Time. This was also the easiest part of the process to fix, requiring only a journey through an obscure series of menus.

Next I had to find the game on the PS Store. Unlike the PS4, PS5, and web stores, the PS3 uses an antiquated system that forces you to select one letter at a time, rather than simply typing a game’s name on a keyboard. This is about as boring as it sounds.

After adding the game to my cart, I tried to check it out. When you first log into the PS3 store, a notification will remind you that credit cards and PayPal do not work and you must add funds using either your smartphone or PC. Having advance warning I couldn’t get too excited about this, but it’s still an added complication in an already complicated process.

I hopped onto my smartphone and logged into the PlayStation Store. Adding funds isn’t the easiest process to begin with, as the link the PS3 store gives you doesn’t actually take you to the Add Funds page – it’s just a two-step guide on how to do it. The actual option to add funds is in your account profile under Payment Management.

Adding funds is also not an easy process. You can’t just price out the game you want to buy and enter the exact cost. Instead, you must add funds in increments of $5, $10, $25, $50, or $60. If your game costs, say, $21 like mine, you’ll have to live with four useless dollars clogging up your PSN account until you buy some more stuff. Locking you into a digital ecosystem is an old cheap trick.

Even less straightforward were the inexplicable error messages I received when trying to actually add money. My credit card had an error; My PayPal had an error. I checked that the Sony servers were up and running, but everything was fine. I decided that maybe my PC would be a better option. But after logging in and trying to add funds via credit card and PayPal again, I got the exact same message: “An error has occurred. Please try again.”

At that point my only option was to go online and see if other people were having the same issue. I had two options: I could buy a PSN gift card and hope for the best, or I could try to add money on a PS4 or PS5. To cut out the middleman, I fired up my PS5 and hopped into the PlayStation Store.

Except, as I’ve discovered, you can’t add money on the PlayStation Store – you’ll have to dive deep into your account menu from the PS5’s home screen. It’s a non-intuitive process from start to finish, but at least it (somewhat inexplicably) worked. I finally had $25 in my PSN wallet.

That was the end of my financial troubles, but there were still a few more hurdles between Yakuza: Dead Souls and I. After finally purchasing the game, I chose the download option only to be informed that I don’t have enough storage space – 20GB to be exact.

That part was perhaps understandable. I’ve had the PS3 for well over a decade and had never really wiped out my game library. It took me a few minutes to uninstall all my digital games and saved a total of 21GB of free space. I went back to the PS Store, where I was told that my 21GB of free space wasn’t enough to install a 20GB game.

This required another foray into the internet help forums. It turns out that every PlayStation game takes twice as much disk space to install (or update) as it actually needs to run, due to redundancies in the installation process. In fact, it took me 40GB of storage to install a 20GB game on a system with 80GB total storage. The PS3’s online store never explains this part of the process, leaving you guessing how much space you actually need to free up.

At this point, I had to navigate into the PS3’s Game Data Utility menu, which contained large installation files from every PS3 game I’d ever played. I had to erase all of that data – but it was absolutely vital that I didn’t touch the Saved Data Utility menu, which is right next to the Game Data Utility, as that would have erased all of my saved files instead. Some of the installation data got corrupted when I tried to delete it, requiring a full console restart.

Finally, more than an hour after trying to buy the game, I was able to start downloading Yakuza: Dead Souls to my PS3. Due to the console’s outdated Wi-Fi connection, the process would take around four hours. I turned off my system and went to bed.

When Sony first announced the closure of the PS3 store, I argued that such practices were counterproductive to the game’s preservation. Without rehashing my whole argument, older games are already difficult to play, and removing them from digital stores makes it that much harder. While it’s admirable that we can still buy and download PS3 games, the process is so complicated that I can’t imagine many people would want that.

To be fair, Sony has a limited amount of resources, and it makes more sense to direct those resources to systems that people actually use on a daily basis. Even in its current, outdated form, the PS3 store takes time, effort, and money to maintain. It would take even more time, money, and effort to meaningfully improve the experience.

And yet people are still buying and playing old games, judging by the outcry against PS3/Vita/PSP store closures. If manufacturers can’t devote resources to improving this process, they should at least try to make sure it doesn’t get worse.

Sony is making it a little harder to buy games digitally on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. According to a support document, as of October 27, you won’t be able to use credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal to buy games or add money to your wallet on these systems. Instead, you’ll need to use a PlayStation Store gift card or top up the wallet associated with your account from the PlayStation Store on the web, your phone, or on a PS4 or PS5.

This disappointing change is the latest in an ongoing history of Sony’s support for its older consoles. In March, Sony announced it would shut down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and Vita, but reversed that plan a few weeks later, saying it “made the wrong decision”. As part of that original March announcement, Sony also announced that the remaining PlayStation Portable purchase feature will be discontinued on July 6th, which now means you will no longer be able to purchase new DLC for PSP games.

Luckily, you can still buy PSP games from the PS3 and Vita digital storefronts if you want. But from a couple of weeks onwards you should make sure to top up your wallet in advance.

UPDATE: Amid public backlash, Sony has reversed course and won’t be shutting down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita, though PSP users are still out of luck.

“It is clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I am happy to say that we will continue to operate the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices. Last week it was rumored that Sony was preparing to close the PlayStation Store for PS3, PS Vita and PSP. This week Sony confirmed(Opens in a new window) that the closures will come later this year.

On July 2nd, the Digital Store for PS3 consoles will close and the remaining PSP purchase feature will end on the same day. For PS Vita owners, the store closure will take place on August 27th, giving them a little longer to grab some new games.

No new purchases will be possible after these dates, including in-game purchases on these platforms, e.g. DLC content. Any PSN Wallet balance you have will remain, but can only be used on PS4 and PS5 products.

Sony hinted that this would happen in October last year when a new version of the web and mobile PlayStation Store was launched with access limited to PS4 and PS5 content. Now we have confirmation that these stores will almost entirely disappear. I say almost because there is good news in all of this.

While Sony is blocking access to a very extensive library of games spread across three hardware platforms, any games you own are still re-downloadable. As long as your console or handheld continues to work, you can continue to play your own games and get new copies from Sony’s servers. This news is sure to result in a rush of purchases from people who still own a PS3, PS Vita or PSP and have a list of games they still want to play.

With the entire game library remaining accessible to existing owners, the decision to close all three stores makes little sense. The games are still there, so why not resell them? As expected, Sony’s rationale for the decision is fairly general: “After careful consideration, we have decided to make these changes to focus our PlayStation Store resources on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which will allow us to enhance the customer experience even further to enhance.
