Function of the mechanical governor

When the engine starts, the weights take a position to maintain a stable idle speed. When the accelerator pedal is depressed against the spring, the weight moves inward, and since the weight is connected to the control rod, fuel delivery is increased, which in turn increases engine speed.

The increased engine speed causes the pump camshaft to rotate faster, which moves the weights outward against the action of the control springs, reducing fuel delivery until the correct balance is reached for a given engine operating condition.

Thus, the accelerator does not directly increase the delivery, but rather delays the regulator’s action. The relative location of the governor weight and control rod positions when the engine is in the idle and full load positions.

Pneumatic regulator

Pneumatic governors are most successfully used in small and medium sized engines. They are sensitive to fluctuations in torque load and ensure stable idle control. As with the pneumatic intake manifold control, the air supply is throttled at light loads by a throttle valve located in a throttle.

This valve is operated directly by the accelerator pedal. The throttle unit is placed between the air cleaner and the inlet to the intake manifold. This leads to reduced air pressure at the end of the intake process.

Injection is then into less dense air than with unrestrained induction, and control thus becomes a matter of quantity rather than quality control. Fuel injection is controlled by the vacuum at the choke to a diaphragm chamber mounted at the end of the injection pump.

The diaphragm plate is mounted at the end of the pump’s control rod. It is pushed to the full load position (to the right) by the main control spring. Again, the increased depression of the throttle valve occurs when the accelerator pedal is released. This pulls the diaphragm and control rod to the left, reducing fuel delivery.

An auxiliary spring is also used to compensate for the drop in height when idling. It is gradually set in motion by the action of a cam.

hydraulic regulator

Hydraulic controllers eliminate the high mechanical forces, bearing loads and possible torsional vibrations in the drive. And therefore they are preferred to mechanical regulators.

In a mechanical governor, the operative agent is centrifugal force, which governs speed. In a hydraulic regulator, it is the pressure difference across an orifice that is required to direct oil flow from a positive oil pump driven by a motor.

The pressure difference changes with the square of the engine speed. And it is determined in balance by the pressure of the driver’s foot on the accelerator pedal.

A hydraulic governor, like a mechanical governor, is an all-speed governor, meaning the governor has control of the entire rack, which is operated by the governor rather than directly by the accelerator to supply to maintain speed regardless of the power requirements may of moment to be moment.
