‍‍Here is the basic process:

Step #1: Screening interview with HR or internal recruiter

This takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. The HR department or recruiter spends most of their time asking questions about your career. They usually start in chronological order from your first position to your last position. You will be expected to answer questions in the

STAR format (click here for detailed instructions).

You’re unlikely to get too much feedback during this conversation, and it may seem rather “informative” or casual — but it rarely is. Job seekers tend to come out of the interview feeling good, which is odd because you have no indication of whether or not you’ve made it to the next round! I believe the reason for this is that the recruiter/HR lets people talk without interrupting most of the time. People like to talk but don’t know if they’re saying the right things or not. Here’s the best way to approach that first conversation and make sure you’re saying the right things: 1) Practice talking about your career from start to finish. There will inevitably be bits and pieces that you’ve forgotten, including why you left certain jobs and so on.

The reasons for our decisions are often lost in the mists of time, so you may need to review and brainstorm them. Typically, the last five years of your career are considered the most relevant. 2) Go deep. You will probably be asked about your greatest failure and greatest success in your career. Choose your samples wisely. It’s better to have one or two very detailed and relevant examples (in the last five years) than ten superficial answers. 3) Don’t talk too much. We tend to be overly descriptive with our answers, but it’s usually best to be brief. I recommend keeping each answer to a minute or less. If the interviewer wants more details, they will ask. Overall, be honest about your job search and explain why you’re interested in joining Amazon and the specific role.

Step #2: Interview the hiring manager

This part is done either in person or via a phone call with the HR manager, who would be your line manager. The hiring manager is on your side. They have the biggest pain point, which means they really need to hire someone. It’s in their best interest to be nice to you, and they usually are. That doesn’t mean you won’t get tough questions. However, I find that this first meeting with the hiring manager will be one of the most important opportunities for you to ask specific questions about the position.

For this interview, you should be ready to sell yourself. Prepare fewer questions about the culture and more questions about what kind of goals the manager has, what projects you would work on right away, and what expectations they have for the role. The hiring manager is usually the “easiest” interviewer you come into contact with. Your conversation will likely revolve around the role itself and your career goals, along with your relevant experience for the job. You should use this meeting to learn as much as you can about the job. You want to find out: What would I do on a daily basis and what will it be like to work with this manager? Here are some good questions to ask them when they first meet:

What are the three most important leadership principles for this job? How do you define success for this role? What metrics do you use to measure my performance? What specific tools will I use at work? What does a typical day look like? What opportunities for advancement and development are there in this role? Do you have any concerns about my skills or experience for this job?

The best Amazon interview questions

For behavioral questions, interviewers are free to choose their own question, regardless of role. Each role at Amazon typically has 3 or 4 leadership principles that are critical to the role. You need to find out what those are, and then you can adjust your answers to make sure you meet those principles. For a data analyst role, the key principles are probably 1) dive deep, 2) learn and be curious, 3) insist on the highest standards, and 4) invent and simplify. Or, if you’re applying for a sales leadership role, “Hire and develop the best” will likely be one of them.

A good way to find out the key principles is to ask the in-house recruiter or hiring manager when you meet/speak to them on the first call. “What leadership principles are most important for this role?”

To prepare for the behavioral interviews, have the answers to all of these questions ready in the master list and focus on the key principles relevant to the analyst role.

An example of behavioral questions they will ask you:

Describe a difficult interaction you had with a customer. How did you deal with it? What was the result? How would you handle it differently? Tell me about a time when you did everything for a client. Why did you do that? How did the customer react? What was the result? Give me an example of how you were able to anticipate a customer need with a solution/product that he/she didn’t yet know he/she needed/wanted. How did you know they needed this? How did you react? Tell me about a time when you were trying to understand a complex problem on your team and you had to dig into the details to figure it out. Who did you talk to or where did you have to look to find the most valuable information? How did you use this information to solve the problem? Tell me about a situation where you had to dig deep to find the cause. How did you know you were focusing on the right things? What was the result? Would you have done something differently? Tell me about a problem you had to solve that required careful thought and analysis. How did you know you were focusing on the right things? What was the result? Would you have done something differently? Describe a time when you refused to compromise your standards of quality/customer service etc. Who was your customer? What was the result? Tell me about a time when you were unhappy with the status quo. What did you do to change it? What was the impact? Would you do anything differently in the future? Tell me about a time when you worked to improve the quality of a product/service/solution that already had good customer feedback. Why did you think it could be improved? How have customers reacted?

Step #3: Write Test

Certain roles require you to submit a writing test of approximately two pages that you must fill out yourself so you can do it at home. The best way to write this is using the STAR format which I will explain in the following section. My recommendations are: 1) Limit the length to two or three pages – no more than that. 2) Make your sample writing as logical and concise as possible. 3) In the story, always give reasons for decisions you have made. 4) Add numbers/dates where you can.

This writing sample will be taken seriously in the context of the interview, since as an Amazon employee you will not be using PowerPoint presentations. In fact, PowerPoint presentations are not allowed on Amazon. Instead, you often have to write reports and explain your thoughts in a detailed written format. This is a two-page essay written at home on a topic of the hiring manager’s choice. You usually have a week to complete it. Depending on your level and role, this step may not be necessary.

Engineering and technical interviews

Leadership principles and your cultural fit are critical to getting hired, but the greater your technical prowess, the more flexibility Amazon has in terms of “culture.” Amazon offers you either a surprise test during the interview or an actual engineering/coding test (with advance notice). If you’re applying for a job that requires the use of Excel (as the job description says), your pivot table skills will likely be tested for 20-30 minutes as part of the interview. Be prepared. For example, if you’re applying for a job as a business analyst, they probably won’t tell you if there’s a test, but depending on how technical it is, you can at least expect them to test your SQL skills at the interview .

This may not necessarily require you to use a database management system, but will come in the form of a question like, “If you have two SQL database tables that are not related, how would you create another table to connect them?” For any position that requires programming skills, you can expect the programming test to be the beginning of the process. This means it will be either your first or second interview right after you have spoken to an HR/recruiter. This will not be an extremely complex test that will take hours of your time. Remember that there is no rush to go through all the interviews. If you feel like you need 2-3 weeks to brush up on certain skills or can’t answer some of the questions above, then be sure to practice ahead of time before applying for the position. If you have already applied and are feeling overwhelmed and unwilling to respond, then request a postponement of the meetings.

Interview preparation checklist for technical interviews

With that in mind, here are some tips for the technical interviews.

Always bring a pen, spare pen and paper, even if it is a “programming interview”. Don’t be afraid to repeat the question/problem. You may have a certain time limit (an hour), but it makes sense to make sure you fully understand the question, then figure out the best way to solve it, and finally spend a fraction of the time actually doing it. Understand the properties of data structures and how to use them. Understand how your language uses internal structures to manage the code/objects you write. 5. As with all Amazon interviews, conciseness is key. That means not talking too much, but not skipping important points. The interview should never be a monologue.

Your technical skills are an important part of the hiring equation, but it’s also important for the interviewers to know what you did, how you did it, and in what context. The STAR method is best suited for this (see Chapter 7). Amazon hiring managers in particular want to know a few things about your technical expertise. Be ready to tackle these two big questions. 1. How to work in a team. Are you a strong communicator? Did you work cross-functionally? What examples do you have of this? 2. Successes + Impact. You may have created a great system, but how was it used? What impact has it had on the business? Can you speak in terms of speed, efficiency, ROI, sales, revenue, marketing, etc.? Step #4: Final “loop” interview

These are the final rounds of interviews. It can be anywhere from two to nine interviews, usually back-to-back. The number of interviewers correlates with the level of the role. So a Level 7 (L7) role would have a total of seven interviewers; an L5 would have five and so on.

(Click here to see salary ranges for Amazon.) The rest of the Loop interviewers will be grab bags. Some interviewers will be related to your role and others will be from completely different teams. Which teams they come from depends on the role. In fact, it’s likely that you won’t even work with most of them in your actual job, or they may not know what job you’re applying for. You will simply be included in the hiring process to test your cultural fit. If you know their names in advance, it can be helpful to quickly check them out on LinkedIn to get an idea of ​​their background. All Loop interviewers are there to provide a more objective assessment, and at the end of the day they look at one thing: your alignment with leadership principles. The top questions bar raisers will judge you on relate to their leadership principles. But which? “You could be interviewed about anyone, but more about leadership principles that have less to do with functional aspects of the role,” says the former Amazon career coach

Suppose you are applying for a job in marketing. The bar raiser is not the one to ask you a functional question about how you would approach a marketing campaign, what data you would analyze and how you would plan for the results. Instead, the bar raiser might ask you something like, “Tell me about a time you made a bad decision” to assess your behavioral skills in decision making and course correction.

Also, in most of my interview loops, the bartender typically asked behavioral questions. So I would recommend preparing for your background and talking about why it prepared you to be successful in this role.”

Step #5: Schedule a meeting

After you have finished meeting all the interviewers, the people you met with come together in a room to discuss whether you are the right candidate for this role. As a rule, you will find out the result within a week of the conclusion of the final talks. There’s not much you can do at this point, but if you haven’t already, be sure to send a thank you message to the people you’ve met. Sit tight!

Step #6: Offer to meet

If everything is positive, HR will ask for your current and expected salary. Based on this information and the level of the position, they will send you a written offer. Sometimes the HR department invites the interviewee into their office to explain this in person in a “suggestion interview” instead of in a phone call. This meeting is not a place where you will negotiate. Any negotiation should take place prior to the bid meeting. In this case, they may need to meet again, or they may invite you to another interview, a “last, last” interview. You can contact the internal or external recruiter and simply ask them, “When is the interview date?” Once you get the interview date and time, 99% of the time it means you won’t get the job if you don’t hear from them that day.

Unfortunately, it may take a while for them to give you the negative feedback. However, if the feedback is positive, they will be happy to contact you that day to share the good news with you. How to Get an Amazon Referral

The most powerful way to stand out in the application process is to get a referral from someone at Amazon. Of course, getting a referral from someone in the business helps, but here are some factors that can reinforce your referral signal.

So how do you actually get an interview at Amazon? The most important step you can take is an internal recommendation from a current employee of the company. Here’s a guide on how to get that recommendation and why it’s so important.

Why referrals matter

Getting a referral on Amazon may affect or affect your ability to make the interview round.

LinkedIn has a powerful advanced search feature that allows you to search people who work at the company you are applying for, in addition to people who have previously worked at the company.

In addition to LinkedIn, let your personal network know that you’re applying for a job at Amazon (as well as other companies you’re applying for). This helps your friends and network search on your behalf. A simple text message or email can do wonders when it comes to using your weak bonds to make a connection.

Ask for recommendations

Asking for a referral can feel awkward and daunting. What if the person doesn’t know you that well? What if they don’t respond?

Remember that employees generally want to recommend you – Amazon employees receive thousands of dollar rewards for successful recommendations, so they’re motivated to work with you and recommend you if they think you’re a good fit.

Let’s take a look at how to compose a cold email to different types of contacts.
