Cheapest airport to fly to Hawaii

The cheapest flights to Hawaii usually land in Honolulu at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Hawaii’s capital, or at Kahului Airport (OGG), on Maui. This is because it is cheapest to fly to and from the busiest airports in a region, and both HNL and OGG are accessible to Hawaii’s most popular vacation destinations.

As can be seen in the table below, airfares for US continental flights to HNL and OGG are roughly similar, so it’s worth comparing flights to both airports to find the best price.

Route fare Non-peak flight (March 2021) LAX to HNL $163 LAX to OGG $156 JFK to HNL $335 JFK to OGG $335 Peak flight (June 2021) LAX to HNL $279 LAX to OGG $348 JFK to HNL $473 JFK after OGG $474

If you don’t have a specific destination within Hawaii, you can use a flight search engine like Kayak to compare the cost of airfare from your home airport to both HNL and OGG airports to find the cheapest round-trip fare. Both Honolulu (on the island of Oahu) and Kahului (on Maui) are either home to or surrounded by popular Hawaiian vacation destinations.

Can you drive to Hawaii from Ohio?

It is not possible to drive to Hawaii from mainland United States. You can ship your car over to Hawaii using a freight service or you can fly and pick up a rental car instead. Once you get to Hawaii, there are no car ferries between the different islands.

Distance from Ohio to Hawaii

Most people know that Hawaii is an archipelago far off the coast of the United States, and unless your car can swim and sail across the Pacific, you can’t physically drive to Hawaii, but there are other options via ferries, ships, or a get there any other way?

It is not possible to drive to Hawaii from the mainland United States. You can ship your car to Hawaii using a freight service, or you can fly and pick up a rental car instead. Once you reach Hawaii, there are no car ferries between the various islands.

To find out exactly what your options are, check out the detailed explanation below.

Why you can’t drive to Hawaii from the United States

Hawaii is a small group of islands located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It’s about 2,400 miles off the California coast — that’s almost as wide as the Lower 48 States, so it’s a long way if you want to bring your own car.

Given the distance, there are obviously no land connections between the mainland United States and Hawaii, no bridges, and no ferries. The Pacific Ocean is tough enough for merchant ships to cross with huge storms and big waves, and ferries wouldn’t stand a chance.

Even if there were a ferry, at a typical average speed of 25 knots (29 miles per hour), it would take three and a half days to get to Hawaii, even if the ferry had enough fuel for the long trip — that’s a long ride by the ferry!

As a result, it’s incredibly rare for anyone to bring their own car to Hawaii. There are no easy ways to do this, and the expense makes it a relatively pointless exercise.

When you travel to Hawaii and see cars with plates from other US states, it’s usually for one of two reasons: The main reason is that the US military often transports private cars for its personnel so the troops can use their car where wherever they are stationed.

They even ship cars as far away as Germany and other foreign outposts, confusing locals with American-registered cars cruising their streets.

There are also a small number of wealthy people who may have extra expensive exotic cars where money is not an issue and they can ship their cars to go on vacation although these often arrive by air.

Your options if you want to ship and drive your car to Hawaii

The road to Mana on the island of Maui is a spectacular drive and well worth renting a car. MNStudio/Shutterstock.com

If you really need to get your car to Hawaii and drive there, your only real option is freight shipping. The way it works is that you need to find a shipping company that will ship goods between the mainland United States and Hawaii and buy a container or part of a container.

The cost of shipping a 20-foot container from the West Coast of the United States varies by company, weight and other factors, but expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500 each way. If you plan to come back, it will be an expensive process. If you have an extra large vehicle like a Ford F-350, the 20ft container is too short, so you have to pay a hefty premium to upgrade to a 40ft option.

The above does not include transportation of the car from your place of residence to the Port of Long Beach or anywhere else in California. If you live on the east coast, this shipping can cost even more than shipping across the ocean.

The shipment usually takes 5 to 7 days after the car arrives at the port and loaded into the container. So you have to plan in advance how to get the car to the port and pick it up at the other end.

Another important point is that you should contact specialized car transport companies. These cost more than your regular container shippers, but often have specially designed car seat belt systems in the containers, which can be much gentler on your car when loading and unloading from the cargo ship.

You can also have no belongings in the car at all – almost every cruise line insists that the car is completely empty for the journey. So if you’re thinking of packing all your luggage in there, this plan won’t work.

Alternatives to driving your own car in Hawaii

Roads in Hawaii like this one on the island of Oahu are spectacular, but you can’t drive your own car here. Malgorzata Litkowska/Shutterstock.com

If you are traveling to Hawaii and plan to drive, flying over and picking up a rental car upon landing is by far the best option.

In fact, public transportation in Hawaii is limited, so you should have a car when you’re there, and that’s what a large number of tourists do all the time.

Almost all major car rental companies can be found at the Honolulu Airport or in the city itself, including Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Alamo. A little further outside of the terminal building and in the city of Honolulu are a few other local businesses that may be able to offer lower rates.

If you’re traveling from O’ahu, the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai each have a dozen or so rental locations with many big names. Just remember that you need to rent a car on each island separately as there are no ferries between them, which brings us to the last point.

You cannot drive the same car on different Hawaiian Islands

Although the larger islands in Hawaii are not too far apart, people travel back and forth between the islands primarily by air.

When I say air, I don’t mean big jumbo jets that take 2 hours to board – many of the planes that fly regularly between the islands have less than 10 seats and some of the local airports are quite small.

Air travel has become popular and affordable as three local carriers have competed with Hawaiian Airlines.

Ferries in Hawaii tend to be small and do not carry cars. EQRoy/Shutterstock.com

This has resulted in ferries never becoming anything in Hawaii. There are only two ferry services that operate between Maui and Lana’i and Maui to Molokai, but these are for passengers only and do not carry vehicles. All other islands are only accessible by private boat or plane.

That means that if you ship your car to Hawaii, want to pick it up in Honolulu a week later, and then drive to one of the other islands, you’re going to have a whole lot of headache arranging transportation to get it there. It’s really not worth it.

Even if you love driving fast cars and have a supercar parked in your garage at home, a quick search on the Hertz website for Honolulu rentals will bring up options like the Chevy Camaro SS (which comes in a distinctive Hertz yellow). Porsche Macan (in the Hertz Dream Car series), Dodge Challenger R/T and a Range Rover Sport. Jeep Wranglers, full-size SUVs, and everything in between are also available.

You can see that you would have to be very picky not to find anything that works for your vacation.

A 2 week rental of anything from Hertz’s Adrenaline collection, which includes the Fort Mustang GT, costs less than $1,200 all told – less than the shipping cost of your own car one-way from California.

The state consists of a volcanic archipelago made up of eight islands: the island of Hawaii (often referred to as the “Big Island”), Oahu, Lauai, Malokai, Kahoolawe, Niihau, Kauai, and Maui. All islands except Kahoolawe are inhabited. Hawaii is the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands and is the 50th and most recent state to join the Union, becoming a U.S. state on August 21, 1959. As an island archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii has no land borders and therefore does not border with any US state.

Geography of Hawaii

The state has a total area of 28,311 square kilometers and a population of approximately 1.4 million people, which ranks the 8th smallest by area and the 13th most populous in the United States. Geographically, Hawaii offers diverse natural landscapes, a warm tropical climate, and active volcanoes in the southern part of the state. Emergence of Hawaii

Hawaii sits over a volcanic hotspot where hot molten rock is pushed up from the sea plate to the Earth’s surface, resulting in volcanic activity. In fact, Hawaii was created millions of years ago by this volcanic process. Several volcanic eruptions led to the formation of a series of islands that now form Hawaii’s archipelago of islands. Geologists believe the Hawaiian Islands will continue to change as the Pacific Plate is still in motion, moving a few centimeters each year. The tallest volcanic mountain in Hawaii is Mauna Kea at 13,796 feet above sea level.

Brief Political History of Hawaii

The first people to occupy Hawaii between 124 and 1120 were Polynesians. Before the arrival of Europeans in 1778, Hawaii was a monarchy led by King Kamehameha III. A constitution was later passed and adopted in 1950, outlining three branches of government: executive, judiciary, and legislature. The Hawaiian Constitution was amended in 1959 and 1968. Hawaii later joined the United States and is currently governed by a governor and a lieutenant governor. These executives are elected collectively for a four-year term.
