Extensions might just be the answer for you if all the amazing mascara formulas on the market, lash lifts and false lash options aren’t giving you enough of a boost. As with any beauty treatment, it is important to do your research before booking your treatment. We caught up with Clementina Richardson, celebrity lash expert and founder of Envious Lashes in New York, to share everything you need to know about lash extensions, from how long it takes to how much it costs to expect.

What exactly are eyelash extensions?

“Lash extensions are semi-permanent synthetic, mink, or silk fibers that are applied strand by strand to your natural lashes,” explains Richardson. As you might expect, the application is quite cumbersome. “The extensions are carefully applied one at a time with a specially formulated, semi-permanent adhesive that won’t irritate or damage the natural lash,” she adds.

Unlike false lashes, where the strip or individual lashes are applied to the skin, eyelash extensions attach directly to the lash itself. The result is lusher, thicker lashes that might even make you go without mascara (gasp).

Do eyelash extensions look natural?

The final look is designed to enhance your natural lashes with added length, fullness, and lift. Whether this look is more dramatic or natural is up to the client, but in general, the more lashes applied, the more dramatic the effect. According to Richardson, a typical treatment involves between 80 and 140 individual extensions per eye with lashes ranging in length from 6 to 18 mm. “It’s not one size fits all,” she explains. “For example, if you have damaged lashes or inherently weak, short natural lashes, it’s not always possible to achieve a more dramatic look that a client with stronger, thicker lashes can achieve.”

How long does the process take?

The bad news? Expect a treatment time of one to two hours, depending on the look you want. The good news? You can use it as an excuse to lie down, relax and take a forced break from your phone.

A good lash technician will take his time, Richardson reminds. “Safety should come first. Finding someone certified to apply the lashes is a must. Depending on the state, the stylist must also be licensed,” she advises.

How much do eyelash extensions cost?

Cost varies based on location, technician and final appearance. At Envious Lashes, a starter set costs $105, and “Bombshells” — a favorite of Richardson’s celebrity clients like Mary J. Blige — goes for over $550. Longer lashes are both a time and financial investment and can potentially cost you thousands of dollars a year depending on how often you have them filled.

How do you care for eyelash extensions?

Avoid water for the first day or so until the glue is allowed to dry completely. Treat your new lashes to TLC — don’t curl them, apply mascara, or rub your eyes. As a general rule, avoid anything that involves touching your lashes, and also stay away from oil-based products and cleansers. You can apply mascara to just the tips of your lashes if you’d like, but it’s best to leave it all off. After all, your new lashes should be dramatic enough on their own.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

Because the extensions are attached to the lash itself, they last as long as the natural growth cycle, around six weeks. To extend the life of the extensions, Richardson recommends using lash conditioner (yes, there is one!) and gently combing your lashes with a dry spoolie brush. She also recommends getting “refills” every two to three weeks to fill in sparse areas.

After the first 24 hours of wearing, you cannot get Express Individual Lashes and Express Filler wet. Are you a stomach sleeper? While it’s one of the most relaxing sleeping positions, dubbed “free fall[2],” it’s terrible for the health of your lashes.

Most sleep therapists define this pose as a “free fall” because it looks like you’re free falling or falling into bed and forgetting to move afterwards. In this pose, you force your neck into a 90-degree angle[3].

Therefore, it puts a strain on muscles, joints, back and spine. Ultimately, upon waking up, you will have a stiff feeling all over your body.

The biggest contributors to this problem are abrasive cushions made from fabrics such as cotton, velvet, polyester, or linen.

Just as it’s not recommended to use cotton pads around the eyes to remove makeup, cotton pads are also a big no-no.

First of all, cotton pillows are more porous and therefore absorb all moisture. They encourage rough rubbing on the skin and hair, leading to premature loss of eyelash extensions. In addition, the rough surface of cotton is the main cause of wrinkles[6] and acne.

I’m hoping to get under the laser for my vision correction in the next few weeks, which is the only reason I didn’t sign up for a series of eyelash extensions before my Holliers late last month (you might remember (I think Amber reignited my total obsession with lashes.) Individual lash extensions generally last four to six weeks and need to be removed before laser eye surgery, so I’ve decided against spending big bucks on extensions since I wasn’t her are worn continuously for about a month.

Then I had the brilliant idea of ​​having eyelashes applied for two weeks instead. Sometimes referred to as party, flare, holiday, or honeymoon lashes, depending on the salon you choose, these are cluster lashes that are applied with a semi-permanent adhesive and stay in place for about a fortnight and then gradually fade after they should fall out, your own eyelashes are naturally shed. Because they’re clusters rather than individual lashes, they’re faster to put on (less than 30 minutes versus a few hours), and the price reflects that. The damage for two-week lashes is usually about half the cost of longer-lasting counterparts.

Applying it wasn’t exactly what I would call relaxing. I had to keep my eyes open throughout the process and focus my gaze on various points specified by my therapist as she worked along my lash line. Each cluster was attached with tweezers and I was afraid that a wrong move by my therapist would result in my going to an eye surgeon earlier than planned and my eyes watered constantly from the fumes from the glue.

Still, I ended up with a set of fabulous, fluttering falsies with a curl that looked surprisingly natural and blended perfectly with my lashes. The new additions didn’t feel natural, mind you: it took my lids three full days to adjust to the extra weight, but once that happened I can honestly say I completely forgot I was wearing them.

Until I batted my eyelashes a little too enthusiastically and accidentally caused hurricanes, I mean.

Obviously I loved waking up every day with amazing lashes and I found that they encouraged me to wear a lot less foundation than usual (I actually went to Paris one day with JUST CONCEALER AND BLUSHER. True story.) I think so was because my lashes didn’t look as obviously “dressed” as they sometimes do with mascara, although the extensions were slightly longer than my lashes and really made my eyes stand out. When I wear mascara on my fairly long natural lashes with a bald face, they look kind of OTT and out of place, and I feel like they need a more “finished” face than a touch of concealer can provide.

As for aftercare, I was warned against using oily makeup remover, splashing handfuls of water directly on my new lashes when washing my face, and rubbing my eyes; I’ve also been told to use my fingers to gently bring the curls back to the lashes if they’re a bit saggy after a shower.

About a week later, the first casualties in war clothes began to appear. The corner lashes were the first to go, but their absence wasn’t noticeable at all, so I wasn’t too upset about their demise. Between days 10 and 12, a few more tufts of lashes gave way, and I was alarmed to realize that these seemed to be taking a lot of my lashes — root bulbs and all.

When I saw this, I wanted to turn it off, and I’d do it now, if not sooner. I couldn’t get an appointment with the salon to have them removed professionally, so I drove to my local salon supplier, got a bottle of remover specifically for removing semi-permanent eyelash glue, and got to work as soon as I got home.

I gently applied the remover to the glue on my lashes with a cotton swab and tissue under my eyes to prevent excess material from seeping into my eyes, and after a few minutes and a few reps, the false lashes slipped off my own Eyelashes no resistance and none of my own eyelashes stuck to it. Result!

I can see people getting addicted to lash extensions: I’ve only been without mine for a few days and I miss having incredibly impressive lashes with no effort.

On the other hand, however, I’ve lost a lot more lashes than I would naturally do if the extensions fall off on their own, and as a result I have a few gaps in my lash line; I suspect that single extensions would pose less of a problem than cluster lashes in this regard because they aren’t as heavy.

That’s the worst feeling! You’ve worked hard to earn the money you invest in your eyelash extensions. You wake up the next morning to see those gorgeous lashes lying gracefully on your pillow.

The truth is that there are many factors that go into making eyelashes last and this blog is here to break it all down

1. The most common: LASH GROWTH CYCLE!

Your lashes fall out as part of their natural growth cycle, old lashes fall out and new ones grow through to take their place.

Anagen Phase: The first phase of the lash cycle, lashes are too short and delicate to wear extensions.

Catagen Stage: Transitional phase, the end of active eyelash growth. Perfect phase for applying extensions as it has the longest lifespan.

Telogen stage: Final stage of the eyelash growth cycle, the eyelash is loosened and falls out.

What that means:

The average lash has a life expectancy of 8-12 weeks, which means that all of your lashes will fall out within that timeframe. Luckily they don’t all fall out at once!

Hair growth is a natural process; The average person loses 1-5 lashes a day, up to 20% over 14 days.

The good news? When your old lashes fall out, new ones quickly snap up and replace them—you won’t even notice the replacement.

The bad news? When the old eyelashes fall out, your eyelash extensions will fall out too! This is when you may notice “gaps” in your lash line.

Don’t worry, there’s no need to panic!

We understand that it’s only normal for someone to be stressed when their lashes fall out fairly quickly after applying the last fill/set.

Remember that it’s perfectly normal to lose a few natural lashes every day.

If you have large, noticeable gaps, be sure to consult your lash technician to fill them.

2. Wearing oil-based makeup on your gorgeous lashes!

The oil in makeup (mascara, liquid liner, eyeliner) will break down the glue over time and eventually the lashes will just slide off.

Eyelash extensions eliminate the need for mascara, but you may still want to use them for added definition on the lower lash line.

If this is the case then it is a MUST that the makeup you use is OIL FREE and safe for eyelash extensions.

3. Do not clean your eyelashes with a proper eyelash extension cleanser on a daily basis

That’s a big NO NO! Just like your skin; Dirt and bacteria can build up on your lashes, so it’s important to keep them clean!

Daily washing removes the buildup of bacteria and ensures they stay sparkling clean, resulting in longer-lasting lashes!

4. Moisture

Every brand of eyelash glue contains an ingredient called cyanoacrylate that hardens with moisture. If the humidity is very high during your eyelash appointment, the glue may set too quickly.

If the glue sets before the extension adheres to the natural lash, adhesion will be poor and the lash will eventually just pop off after a day or two.

Most lash technicians monitor humidity and have equipment to correct for it, although it can sometimes be very difficult to adjust.

5. Poor quality application

Your eyelash technician may have used too little adhesive and the eyelash extensions may not adhere properly to the natural lash. When this has happened, the eyelash extensions will just pop off.

Make sure to research your lash extensions and make sure you have your lashes applied by a qualified lash technician! Don’t compromise on the quality of your eyelashes!

Solution: Next time, ask for shorter lashes in the inner eye area. If your lash technician doesn’t want to do this for you, then find another.

4. Your extensions are all one length from the inner to the outer eye

This happens when the lash technician hasn’t thought about the shape of your eyes or what will suit you best when applying your lashes. Use a mixture of 2-3 or more lash lengths to avoid making your lashes look like you’ve applied a cheap fake lash strip. Your eyelashes should always match your eye shape.

Solution: Personally, I would look for another eyelash stylist – a lack of attention to detail when styling my eyelashes would be a deal breaker for me!

5. The application process burns your eyes long after it’s over!

Many new customers have told me that they have had bad experiences with adhesive fumes that burn their eyes severely during and after application. One client told me she got into her car after her lashes were applied and had to sit while she blew on the air conditioner to stop the stinging. That’s not normal! Slight tearing of the eyes may occur, but constant discomfort afterwards is uncommon – the process should be relaxing, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Solution: Always let your eyelash extension technician know if anything bothers you during the application. It may be that your eyes are not closed properly, the eye pad is rubbing against your eyes, or the adhesive is not of good quality.

6. Your eyelash extensions only last a week!

This often happens when not enough eyelash extensions have been applied. If you think you’ve found the cheapest technician, then chances are they won’t spend enough time during the appointment to create a long-lasting, full lash effect. A good lash application should last 1.5-2+ hours. A full set of lashes should mean applying them to all of your natural lashes (those that are long enough).

An application of less than 1.5 hours and you are likely to get a quick treatment that will show wear and tear within a week. After 2 weeks all your lashes will be gone. Remember that you will naturally lose 2-5 lashes a day, so do the math.

Keep in mind that if your natural lashes are very sparse, delicate, and fragile, your extensions may not last as long as other people’s. Unfortunately, lashes can only accentuate what you naturally have.

Eyelash extensions can last more than 3 weeks with proper care and great application. Refills are recommended every 2-4 weeks to keep your lashes looking full. The time between fills always depends on your lash care routine, your natural lash cycle and the number of lashes you have to work with.

NOTE: Following the at-home care instructions is key to the durability of your lashes. Always follow this advice.

Solution: Book a longer appointment/refill or select a new technician who will give the time spent on their appointments.

7. Your lashes aren’t extensions, they’re lash extensions or cluster lashes

This is the worst kind of “eyelash extensions”. Clusters or flares should never be applied with permanent eyelash glue. Eyelash breakage and infection are common when eyelash flares are applied, not to mention the appearance is not desirable since your lashes will look more like spiders than the pretty, luscious lashes you are supposed to have.

In general, losing between 3 and 5 lashes a day is only normal. Your natural lashes fall out and regenerate at a reasonable rate. When you rub your eyes, some of your natural lashes twist off. But if you lose most of your eyelash extensions within the first week, that’s not normal. Before you pick up the phone and consult your lash stylist, it’s a good idea to check if your lashes are falling off on natural lashes (you might see a white tip) or just on the extension part. The former could indicate a few things:

Generally, if you lose a lot of natural lashes to extensions, the problem lies with your lash technician. Or it could be a problem with the glue quality. Beware. They ended up pulling out eyelashes with their bare hands. In most cases, you would end up tearing off your natural lashes as well. We strongly advise against this. It’s best to have them professionally removed or wait for them to resolve on their own. Keep your lashes strong and healthy.

Aftercare for eyelash extensions

Eyelash extensions are a high-maintenance beauty treatment. They require very gentle care in order for the lashes to last longer and stay in good condition.

You can wash your face in the sink with a washcloth, avoiding the eye area.

Your hands can get dirty and dirt is oily, so you should keep your fingers off your eyes unless you’re cleaning them.

No saunas, facials or swimming within 4-6 hours of application.

Don’t stick your head in the oven while baking! It can singe your extensions! Turn your head away from the oven when putting something in or pulling something out.

Do not use an eyelash curler.

You should be careful and pay special attention to makeup and remover.

Do not use cotton for your eyelash extensions.

Wash your lashes daily (after the first 4-6 hours). Apply the oil-free makeup remover with your fingers and gently rub over the lashes.

Or you can apply oil-free makeup remover to your lashes with a disposable wand of mascara. Spray onto wand, brush gently through lashes and rinse with warm water.

Mascara should be washable and not waterproof.

This is perfectly normal, and alternating between full sets and refills regularly and in a timely manner will ensure your lashes are always looking their best.

The health of your natural lashes is important

To keep your eyelash extensions looking their best, it’s important to keep your natural eyelashes in the best possible health as they form the foundation on which your extensions are built. As your extensions grow out, the point where your extensions connect to your natural lashes will weaken. To prevent bending and breaking, once the extensions have grown too far, we recommend removing them and attaching a new set to protect your natural lashes.

The condition and fullness of your extensions must be considered

Refills are designed to fill in any obvious gaps left when extensions fall naturally. The point where your real lashes merge into the lash extensions will weaken over time from oil or other contaminants. After about three weeks, the connection begins to become unstable and can become loose. For this reason we prefer not to replenish after the 3 week mark as it is very likely that a large number of your renewals will be canceled over the next week.

For this reason, we recommend that you schedule a refill appointment within the first three weeks of fitting your new kit to get the most out of your extensions and get the best value for your money. After 3 weeks we recommend a new set to ensure your eyelash extensions last and always look their best.

We want to avoid having too much glue on your lashes

When we apply new eyelash extensions, we do so on clean, adherent, and residue-free lashes. This is the ideal scenario for effectively binding the extensions. When applying fillings, we use glue on the already existing glue. This means the bond isn’t as strong and residue builds up on the hair follicle, which isn’t ideal for the health of your lashes.

To maintain a full, soft and luscious look, we recommend only 1 set of refills (or in rare cases an absolute maximum of two) between each full set. Think of it this way: if you applied hairspray to your hair too often between washes, your hair would be stiff and clumpy. Nobody wants lashes that look like this!

Refills are for maintenance only

Refill packs are designed as a maintenance procedure, not as a replacement for periodic replacement of a full set. The number of refills applied in a procedure is fixed and increases the amount of lashes from a full set by 50%. Because of this, this service costs less. Refills are there to fill in gaps created by the natural shedding of lashes between full sets. As long as you follow the time guidelines between a full set and a refill appointment, your lashes should have a density of between 70-100% and more compared to a full set after that appointment.

For best results, we recommend applying refills within three weeks of the original full set. Outside of this three week period, a full kit is better value.

Refills are carried out with four objectives:

1. Clean and clean any eyelash extensions that are still on your eyes

The curing speed of the adhesive can be influenced by 2 main factors: pre-treatment and humidity.

A good pre-treatment has a very positive effect on the curing time and the longevity of the eyelashes. Lash extensions are made of PBT material, which is difficult to bond with cyanoacrylate. An accelerator greatly reduces the surface energy and increases the quality of the adhesion promoter.
