What does an installation appointment include?
At your installation appointment, your natural hair and hand-tied strands will be colored according to the goals we discussed during your consultation. Your custom colored hand tied wefts are then installed, blended and styled. We will also take before and after pictures!
How is the maintenance?
Service visits are required every 6-10 weeks and cost $200 per row. At a maintenance or relocation appointment, I completely remove all weft and old beads and stitching. Everything is then freshly crimped and sewn back in place. Please come to your moving appointment with clean, dry hair. Blowouts and/or paint are available at an additional cost for moving dates and must be planned for in good time.

Can I go swimming in the pool or ocean with hand tied extensions?
Chlorinated water and salt water will ruin your extensions! At the very least it will dry them out, at worst it can cause tangles, tangles and breakage. When swimming or going to the beach, please take every precaution not to get your hair wet. If your extensions get wet, shampoo them thoroughly and use a deeply conditioning hair mask as soon as possible.

Adding extensions is always dependent on your own natural hair. Hand tied shots require more planning to ensure each shot is placed in the best spot, so it takes time. The entire installation process for hand-tied extensions takes at least five hours. We know that’s enough time to see at least half a season of Friends, so this is fair warning and something to be expected.
When it comes to what is applied to your hair, 2-4 wefts are usually sewn into each row. Sometimes one row is perfect, but sometimes you need two or three. This all depends on what kind of look you are going for. During your hand tied hair extensions consultation, your stylist will discuss your specific hair goals and what it will take to achieve them.
After the initial installation, you can expect to use the same extensions for around 6-8 months. However, you should return to the salon every 6-10 weeks to move up the extensions depending on how fast your hair is growing.

These are very rough estimates based on Babes hair extensions (we can’t speak for other brands). Every hair is different, so the actual amount needed may vary.
Remember that unless you’re just using volume or color, matching the thickness at the bottom of the hair to the thickness at the top will make a client’s hair grow longer. Adding too many extensions will strain the client’s hair and create a triangle effect where the hair flares out towards the ends compared to the roots. Adding too few extensions (the more common problem) results in a mullet — or, worse, flimsy strands peeking out from under the natural hair base.
As you gain experience with hair extensions, you will develop an eye for estimating how many hair extensions are needed for a full head. An experienced stylist can also advise you. How many tape hair extensions for a full head?
20 pieces pack
Many people often ask for a 20 piece pack as this is the cheapest pack available. This is ONLY considered a “booster” pack for those who already have tape extensions and would like some new parts or need extra volume. A pack of 20 will NOT suffice for every hair type as this only makes 10 sandwiches of hair. When using tape extensions, 2 pieces are placed over sections of your hair at the root. As you can probably imagine, a 20-piece set will definitely not be enough for a full head of hair.
40 pieces pack
Are 40 pieces of tape in extensions enough? Yes it is! The minimum quantity we recommend to all customers is our 40 piece packs. This pack is suitable for thin to normal hair types and is ideal for ladies with fine hair. A pack of 40 pieces is considered the standard quantity of tape hair extensions as many people find that they use between 30 and 40 pieces. This, of course, creates 20 sandwiches with hair. 60 piece pack
Finally the 60 pack. This amount is perfect for those with thick hair or who want to add a lot of overall volume. For those whose natural hair is medium/thick or has a fairly coarse hair type, this pack is perfect. We usually recommend this option when asked how many pieces of tape hair extensions are for a full head of hair. This obviously creates 30 sandwiches, which is plenty to hold on to unless your hair is super thick. Our 60 piece sets create a complete total look with added thickness and super volume.
Remember that your hairstyle and cut are very important when mixing tape hair extensions. It’s not just about how many pieces you buy for a full head. If you’re looking to add length, 100-150 Grams should be good for a full head. 20″-22″. Again 50-80 Grams should be good to thicken hair or add that pop of color for hair that is already this length. 120-160 Grams is usually good for this length for a full head.

How many grams of hair do I need? That is the question . The other question is, is it possible to have too much hair – and the answer is YES.
Here is a guide to how many grams of hair you need when buying hair extensions:
16-18″ extensions you will need 50-80 grams of hair if you are just looking for fuller hair or want to add highlights or lowlights. If you want to add more length 100-150 grams should be good for a full head.
20″-22″. Again, 50-80 grams should be good for thickening hair or adding that pop of color to hair that’s already that length. 120-160 grams is usually good for this length for a full head.
24-26″. If you are buying hair that long, you are probably buying for the length. Typically 160-240 grams of hair is good for this length. for a full head.
Hair 28 inches and longer should weigh 200-300 grams of hair. Anything else is difficult to blend and you should make sure that the ends of the hair are thicker. Nobody likes thin, stringy ends.
This is an idea of how much hair you need. If you add a lot of hair, you risk not taking care of the hair as well as it should. Too much hair can be more difficult to wash and remove, properly moisturize with conditioners and masks, and dry each of the strands thoroughly. Thick hair that is at least shoulder length can easily be lengthened with 175 – 225 pieces
Keratin Extensions. The thickest hair needs the higher amount the most. It is very important to match the thickness of the client’s hair with the thickness of the hair extensions you are using.
Use 175-225 Keratin/I-tips (808 I-tips are thin so use 200-250 strands)
35-45 Tape-Ins one-sided application (one-sided is not recommended for thick hair)
60-80 tape-ins double-ended application (the shorter and thicker the hair, the more extensions needed).
#4 – Extend short hair 5 inches long
It can be very difficult to lengthen hair shorter than 5 inches – not recommended!
(If you need to go shorter, don’t go shorter than 3 inches and add more extensions at the crown).
Short hair is the most difficult to lengthen. Shorter than 4 ½” – 5” at the crown is not recommended. We do not recommend I-Tip extensions for short hair due to the large amount of beads. An exception are flat I-Tip extensions from Euro SoCap/Seiseta. These flat I-Tips are wider and hold up much better than regular I-Tips. Donna Bella also makes a flat I top.
Thin short hair needs 150-175 pieces of keratin extensions or
For medium thickness, 200-225 pieces of keratin extensions are needed
thick hair need 250 pieces or more.
For thick hair, you need to add more rows than average. We had hair that was so thick that it required 14 bundles of thick hair extensions, which equals 350 pieces of keratin. This is rare, but be aware that this can happen. People can get upset when you run out of hair.

Always make sure you have enough hair to finish the job.

Fasten the first row at the nape of the neck, then brick the next 2-3 rows.

Generally, you’ll need between 4-8 wefts if your objective is volume, and those with finer hair types can expect to use up to 10 wefts (meaning you’ll likely need to purchase two packs of hair).

How many grams should I get for hair extensions?
For fine to medium hair, 100 to 125 grams of hair extensions will do the job, with medium to thick hair looking at around 125 to 175 grams. If you have very thick hair, around 150 to 200 grams will be necessary for adding up to 12 inches in length.

The industry standard
Let’s take a look at what the industry says is the norm. For a quarter length hair extension we see about 25 grams of tied hair with two or three rows. That means half a head in three or four rows weighs about 50 grams and a three-quarter head in five or six rows weighs about 75 grams. If you are looking for a full hair extension or an extra full hair extension, this is about 100-125 grams weaves in seven or eight rows.
This will give you an idea of what standards to expect so you can compare salon hair extension prices. Some places even take into account the added length or weight of the hair as well as the rows applied to come to a conclusion about coverage. So let’s look at these in detail so you can make an informed choice when it comes to hair extensions and to ensure you’re getting what you pay for.
Every salon is different and you’ll find that some will say that creating just a few inches of your hair is a full head and they won’t even consider how many bonds are applied.
When it comes to the weight of hair applied, things get complicated. Hair extensions range in weight, depending on the length and even the ethnicity of the hair itself. For example, you will find that Indian hair weighs more than European hair, and that a longer hair extension is heavier than a shorter one. In other words, it’s very difficult to know where to start when it comes to weight unless you have experience in that area or in the salon.
Again, every salon can be different when it comes to rows of hair extensions, and you’ll find that some places think six rows is for a full head. However, depending on the density of your hair, some people may need less than six rows for coverage, e.g. B. People with fine or thin hair. Alternatively, in some cases, six rows is a three-quarter head for people with average or thick hair.
So how many hair extensions do you need?
First, you need to consider hair density to figure out how many hair extensions you need. With this we are talking about how much hair you have rather than the thickness of the hair strands. For example, you may have thick hair but not very much, meaning you will have fine to average hair density. You can find out your hair density by noticing how long it takes to dry after washing and how it looks once styled.
Thin to fine hair usually takes a minute or two to blow dry with a blow dryer. In addition, when the hair is tied back, the ponytail appears very sparse and thin. Fine to medium hair can take about three to four minutes to dry if it was wet, and while the ponytail may appear fuller than very thin hair, it’s still not as thick as you’d like. If you have normal to thick hair, you can take five minutes after your shower to blow dry it. Also, the ponytail will be heavy and look the way you envision it. In comparison, very thick hair can take up to 10 minutes to dry after washing. Additionally, tying your hair back will make your ponytail look thick and heavy.
Next you need to think about the length of your hair. If you would class yourself as very short haired, you need at least one full hair extension. This is the case if you have thin or fine hair, as well as average and thick hair. This is because it takes more hair extensions to fit into short hair. Otherwise you will end up with an uneven and unnatural look where people can see where the shortest layer is.
If you have shoulder length straight hair, a different number of hair extensions will be needed depending on the thickness. To achieve a length of up to 12 inches, you will need between 75 and 100 grams of thin or fine hair extensions. If you’re looking for extra volume, consider getting 100-150 grams. For fine to medium hair, 100 to 125 grams of hair extensions is enough, for medium to thick hair about 125 to 175 grams. If you have very thick hair, about 150 to 200 grams is needed to add length up to 12 inches.
Again, if you go for the long and luscious look of up to 16 inches in length, the number of extensions you need will depend on the thickness of your natural hair. If you have thin and fine hair look for around 100 grams of hair extensions and if you have fine to average hair choose between 100 and 150 to add length. If you have average to thick hair and want to enjoy a style that goes beyond shoulder length, go for 4 to 6 ounce hair extensions. If you have very thick hair, you will need about 175 to 200 grams to reach 16 inches in length.

There are a few options for high-quality synthetic hair extensions, like Kanekalon and Toyokalon, but human hair extensions are generally the best choice. In fact, human hair extensions last about 3x longer than synthetics – so if you do the math, they’re a much better value!

Even the best hair extensions need replacing, especially if you want to avoid sad, shaggy strands. How often you need to replace extensions depends on what type you have: fusion extensions (every 3-4 months), tape-in extensions (4-8 weeks), or hand-tied extensions (3-4 months).
How long do permanent hair extensions last?
One of the most common questions our hair extensions specialists in Scottsdale hear is, “Can you get permanent hair extensions?” Technically, the answer is yes—but “permanent” may not mean what you think. Hair extensions that are labeled “permanent” are those that can work continuously for several months, meaning you don’t have to put them on and take them off regularly.
When you have a full head of fusion hair extensions, tape ins, flat tip hair extensions, or hand tied wefts, you have permanent hair extensions. But if you’re elevating your everyday look with small sections of tape-ins for added volume, or even clip-ins for special occasions, don’t do that. On average, you can enjoy up to 4 months of permanent extensions before having to replace them with a new set.

How many lines do I need?
1 ROW adds fullness and fills in your ends, making your hair look a little longer.
If your natural hair is already close to your hair target length and you want volume and fullness, 1 row should be enough.
2 ROWS add length and fullness. If there is an extreme difference between the length of your natural hair and your hair goal, in some cases you will need 2 rows or more.
During your consultation (either in person or via digital consultation) we will determine exactly how many rows you need based on your existing hair and your hair goal.
How are they installed?
The extensions are attached by creating a row of beads from your own natural hair and then sewing the hand tied wefts onto this row of beads. I am certified in 3 different hand tied extension application methods and will select the method that works best for your natural density and desired result.
What does an installation appointment include?
At your installation appointment, your natural hair and hand-tied strands will be colored according to the goals we discussed during your consultation. Your custom colored hand tied wefts are then installed, blended and styled. We will also take before and after pictures!
How is the maintenance?
Service visits are required every 6-10 weeks and cost $200 per row. At a maintenance or relocation appointment, I completely remove all weft and old beads and stitching. Everything is then freshly crimped and sewn back in place. Please come to your moving appointment with clean, dry hair. Blowouts and/or paint are available at an additional cost for moving dates and must be planned for in good time.
How often do I need to buy new hair?
New hair should be bought every 6-9 months
I have curly hair. Are there textures that suit my natural curl pattern?
Yes! Hand tied wefts come in a range of curl patterns
Which products can I use?
Hydration is KEY to keeping your extensions in tip-top shape. You need to invest in a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, and a hair serum or oil.

Can I go swimming in the pool or ocean with hand tied extensions?
Chlorinated water and salt water will ruin your extensions! At the very least it will dry them out, at worst it can cause tangles, tangles and breakage. When swimming or going to the beach, please take every precaution not to get your hair wet. If your extensions get wet, shampoo them thoroughly and use a deeply conditioning hair mask as soon as possible.
Can I put my hair up?
Yes! Ponytails, topknots, braids, half up/half down styles are all doable with hand tied extensions!

When we receive an inquiry from a new customer who has had hair extensions before, we typically ask, “Do you know how many hair extensions you need?” Some know exactly what insurance coverage they have, others have no idea or what they actually need , is very different from what they think they need. It’s really no surprise since salons and freelance hair extensions use many different methods of calculating coverage. So, whether you’re just considering getting hair extensions fitted or you’re an experienced wearer, if you want to know how many hair extensions are right for you, read on…
When looking at the price of hair extensions, the word “coverage” comes up a lot – it just means how many individual hair extensions to put on to achieve the look you want.
NuTress follows the industry standard
A quarter head is about 50 micro-ties (2-3 rows)
Half a head is about 100 micro-ties (3-4 rows)
A three-quarter head is about 150 micro-ties (5-6 rows)
Full head is about 200 micro ties (7-8 rows)
Failure to meet these standards makes it impossible for you to compare prices. Some salons use the length added or the number of rows applied or the weight of the hair to calculate coverage.
Added Length – Some salons are considering adding just a few inches of length as a full head, no matter how many bindings are applied. And because as little as 100 weaves can be enough to add a lot of length to longer, thin/fine and fine/average hair, some salons refer to what is actually about half a head as a full head.
Rows Applied – Some salons consider 6 rows of hair extensions as a standard full head. However, far less hair is needed to build 6 rows of hair extensions for fine/thin hair density clients than for average or thick hair density clients. In fact, we usually find that about 150 micro weaves are needed for 6 rows, which is actually a 3/4 head, while our full head of 200 hair extensions is usually enough to attach up to 8 rows.
Weight of applied hair – let’s face it, how do you even know where to start with that? The weight of each hair extension varies by ethnicity and length i.e. length. H. all micro bond hair extensions are about the same density, but Indian hair is heavier than European hair and an 18 inch hair extension weighs more than a 10 inch hair extension. As a result, a 100 gram bundle of 10 inch hair will produce many more hair extensions than a 100 gram bundle of 18 inch hair. Unless you work in the hair extensions industry, how do you even know where to start? We’ve seen examples of just 30 grams of 10 inch hair called a half head. 30 grams of 10-inch hair creates approximately 65 micro-bonds, a third fewer than the 100 bonds standard in the industry. Do you know how to calculate that? Of course not.
Not using the industry standard prevents you from making an informed decision. Prices often appear to be lower than they actually are, only on consultation, customers with average/thick and thick hair are presented with a much higher price. Worse still, some customers pay for what they believe to be full hair extensions when in fact they have applied much less.
How many hair extensions do you need?
This really depends on the density and length of your natural hair and the look you want.
1. Hair Density
First you need to know what type of density your hair is. This doesn’t mean how thick each individual hair is, but how many hairs you have. We have clients with very coarse and thick hair, but since they don’t have much of it, their overall hair density is fine/average. We also have clients with very fine individual hairs but lots of them which makes their overall hair very thick and dense.
Medium-Length Thin/Fine Hair Medium-length, thin/fine hair takes only a minute or two to dry, is “see-through” at bob length, when tied back in the ponytail is very sparse. This type of hair is often unmanageable and when it grows to shoulder length it is very thin and stringy. Ali Larter’s photo was the best we could come up with to show off this type of hair. On the snaps of every other celebrity we found with thin/fine hair, they were either wearing hair extensions to add volume or sporting the shortest of all pixie cuts!
Medium Length Fine/Average Hair Medium length fine/average hair like Cameron’s takes about 3-4 minutes to dry and can be pulled into a respectable but not very weighty ponytail. When this hair type grows past shoulder length, it lacks weight and volume
Medium Length, Average/Thick Hair Medium length, average/thick hair takes about 5 minutes to dry. Tied back, the ponytail is heavy and tight. Hair like Rosie’s is very versatile and suits a variety of cuts. It tends to be strong and durable.
Medium-length, very thick hair Medium-length, very thick hair takes up to 10 minutes to blow dry. Tied back, the very heavy ponytail is thick and tight. Clients with hair like Mila’s often complain that it’s too thick.
2. Hair Length
Next you need to look at the length of your natural hair.
Very short hair If, like Danni, you have very short hair
To increase the length you will need – Thin/fine hair – need up to a full head Fine/average hair – need up to a full head. Average/thick and very thick hair – requires a full head plus even if you only have your hair lengthened to your shoulders it takes a lot of hair extensions to blend with very short hair. If too few extensions are used, the result will be stringy, unnatural and could leave a ‘cap’ – this is where the shortest layer of natural hair does not blend and is clearly visible.
Chin to Shoulder Length If your hair is chin to shoulder length like fern, thin/fine hair – about 75-100 hair extensions will be required to add hair up to 12 inches in length. For longer lengths and lots of volume, 100-150 hair extensions are needed. Fine/Medium Hair – To add hair approximately 12 inches in length, approximately 100-125 hair extensions will be needed. For longer lengths and lots of volume, 125-175 hair extensions are needed. Medium/Thick Hair – About 12 inch hair can be added with 125-175 hair extensions. For more length and lots of volume, 150-200 hair extensions are needed. Very Thick Hair – About 12 inch long hair can be added with 150-200 hair extensions. For longer lengths and lots of volume, 200 or more hair extensions are needed.
Above Shoulder Length If your hair is above shoulder length like Jennifer Thin/Fine Hair – Up to 16 inches of hair can be added with about 100 hair extensions. Longer lengths and lots of volume can be added with around 100-125 hair extensions. Fine/Average Hair – Hair up to 16 inches in length can be added with 100-150 hair extensions, lots of length and volume can be added with 125-175 hair extensions. Average/Thick Hair – Hair about 16 inches in length can be added with 125-175 hair extensions, lots of length and volume can be added with about 150-200 hair extensions. Very Thick Hair – About 175-200 hair extensions would be required to add 16 inch hair, longer lengths can be added with about 200 or more hair extensions.

Even adding just 10 hair extensions will add volume to some extent. We have clients who have between 25 and 75 bonds to increase volume. The most popular amount to add is a quarter head of 50 bonds.

If you follow my work, you’ve probably heard me refer to “rows”. The number of rows and hair length (either 18″ or 22″) are the 2 factors that will determine the price of your installation. Since bead row extensions are so different from other extension methods, I thought it would be helpful to go over the basics of what a row actually is, as well as the most common scenarios in which the different number of rows is used!
So what is a series? A row is a solid line of extension hair that is placed around your head in a horseshoe shape (as opposed to individually tied strands of hair or pieces of tape). Each row consists of several hand-tied wefts (a weft is a piece of hand-tied hair), usually between 4 and 6, which are individually colored and placed for each client to create a seamless blend. When deciding how many shots to incorporate into each row, there are a few things to consider –
1. Your hair texture and density – this determines how much weight your hair can handle without risking damage.
2. Your desired end result – aka how long and how thick you want it to be once your extension hair is in place.
Now that you know what a row is, here are the basics of how many rows can be worn (between 1 and 3) and the most common scenarios where the different number of rows are typically used!
1st row
– 1 row is used exclusively to fill in or thicken your current length – zero length can be added with 1 row.
– If you love your length and wish it were a little fuller or lasted a style longer, 1 row could be a great fit for you.
