All electrical appliances have 3 specifications: wattage, current and voltage. To understand how electricity works, imagine it is water running through a garden hose.

Ampere is the flow rate of water through the hose. For example, let’s say you have two hoses side by side, each with a flow rate of 3 gallons per minute. They have the same amperage. Tension is pressure. From example 1, imagine 3 gallons of water flowing out of hose #1 with no nozzle. The water can flow up to a few feet out of the hose when it splashes out. Imagine putting your thumb on tube #2 and applying double the pressure. You can create a jet of water that shoots across the lawn. Doubling the pressure on hose #2 equals doubling the voltage. However, the water no longer gushes out of the hose, but in a concentrated jet. With hose #2 the flow rate (amperage) is reduced to half the original flow rate, it is a narrower but more intense stream of water.

Wattage is output (power). The equation for wattage is voltage times current (Watts = Volts * Amps). In our example, hose #1 with 3 gallons of water flowing out has the same wattage as hose #2 with twice the pressure and half the flow rate (1.5 gallons). 1*3=3 and 2*1.5=3

What is the most efficient combination when it comes to infrared heaters?

The benchmark that defines the cost of operating an infrared heater is the wattage (power). You pay your electricity bill by the kilowatt (1 kilowatt is 1,000 watts) you use per hour. Think of the equation Watts = Volts*Amps. If you have a 1,500w heater at 120v it will draw 12.5 amps (1,500/120 = 12.5). Alternatively if you have a 1500W heater at 240V it will draw 6.25A (1500/240 = 6.25). The only difference is the amperage. Because the wattage (output) is the same, there is no difference in the cost of running the 1500W 120V version versus the 1500W 240V version.

The only benefit of using a higher voltage is that the amperage will be lower, and that is the limitation of your switchboard (most switchboards are 200 amps). By reducing the amperage, you can also add more heaters to each circuit. This results in a reduction in the amount of wiring required for an electrician to install the heaters and generally means lower installation costs! For this reason, when hardwiring a system, we generally recommend using the highest voltage available in your home or business. A word of warning: heaters are voltage specific; H. they are designed to operate at a specific voltage. For example, if you connect 240V to a heater that is rated for 120V, you are applying twice the voltage (pressure) you want it to operate at. While you’re actually getting double the power (3,000W), this overloads the heater and tends to fail prematurely if it’s running at all. Conversely, if you connect 120V to a heater rated for 240V, you will get half the power (750W), whereas ordering a 120V heater could have gotten you 1,500W. There is no difference in cost between different voltage heaters, so it is always best to match apples to apples and order the correct heater for your application.

Standard outlets can handle quite a few watts before catching fire. Of course, no one likes to watch a socket catch fire. That’s why we check how many watts a socket can take.

Below we illustrate how the maximum wattage is calculated for all outlets. Standard outlets can handle between 1320W and 5150W (110V 15A to 220V 30A). We show 3 examples, namely how many watts a 15 amp, 20 amp and 30 amp circuit breaker can handle. This plays a key role in determining how many watts a standard outlet can handle.

Note: For your convenience, you will also find an output power calculator; You just plug in the circuit size and voltage to get the maximum. output power. First, let’s look at the only two factors that determine how many watts an outlet can handle. These are:

Breaker size (+ NEC 80% rule). In the United States, the standard sizes for residential circuit breakers are 15 amp, 20 amp, and 30 amp. This tells us how many amps an outlet can draw. However, we must be careful. We can charge a circuit breaker to 80% of its ampere rating (example: we can only put 12 amperes on a 15 amp circuit). This is known as the National Electric Code 80% Rule, or NEC 80% Rule for short (explained in Article 210.21(B)(2) of the NEC). This is a basic safety measure that will prevent your container from catching fire. voltage. In standard sockets we usually have 110V or 120V voltage. In addition, we also do calculations of how many watts a 115V, 230V and 240V socket can handle.

To calculate max watts for each outlet, we use this basic electrical power equation:

Output Power = Max Amps Allowed × Voltage

We get the “Max. Allowable amperes depending on breaker size. It is important that we respect NEC’s 80% rule here. The “tension” is pretty self-explanatory.

Here’s a quick example before we continue: how many watts can a 110v outlet on a 15 amp circuit breaker handle?

Well, a 15 amp circuit breaker is rated at 15 amps. Applying NEC’s 80% rule, we see that connecting an outlet to such a breaker can draw at most 12 amps (since 80% of 15 amps is 12 amps are). We also know that the voltage is 110V. This is what this calculation looks like:

110V 15A output power = 12 amps × 110V = 1,320 watts

How many watts can a 15 amp, 20 amp, and 30 amp circuit breaker handle? (3 examples)

In this above equation we obviously know the voltage. What we don’t know is the maximum allowable amperage for an outlet. We need to calculate this based on the breaker size and using the NEC 80% rule.

Let’s take a 20 amp circuit breaker as an example. If we can determine how many amps such a breaker can deliver to the outlet, we can calculate (aka voltage) how many watts an outlet can handle on a 20 amp circuit.

We know we have 20 amp rated amps because this is a 20 amp circuit breaker. Here’s how we apply NEC’s 80% rule:

max. allowable amps (20A) = 20 amps × 0.8 = 16 amps

This means that an outlet on a 20 amp circuit breaker can draw 16 amps (or less). Now, to calculate the wattage of such an outlet, we just multiply the 16 amps by the voltage.

Here are the calculated maximum wattages of 110V outlets on 15A, 20A, and 30A residential circuits:

At 15A 110V we have max. allowable output current of 12A. Therefore, a 110V, 15A outlet can deliver 1,320 watts of power.

, we have max. allowed output current of 12A. Therefore a 110V socket with 15A to 20A can supply 110V, we have max. allowed output current of 16A. Therefore, a 110V, 15A outlet can deliver 1,760 watts of power.

, we have max. allowed output current of 16A. Therefore a 110V socket with 15A to 30A can supply 110V, we have max. allowed output current of 24A. Therefore, a 110V, 15A outlet can deliver 2,640 watts of power.

For comparison, if we use a voltage of 220V, the max. The socket ratings would be 2,640W, 3,520W, and 5,280W for 15A, 20A, and 30A circuits, respectively.

What does 16a 250V mean?

So 16 A / 250 V basically means that unless your laptop’s power supply consumes over 16 amps of power and unless the electricity company provides over 250 V, your socket is guaranteed to not catch fire.

This question consists of two parts. The first part questions the connector labeling, the second the labeling of the computer power supply.

About the plug: (16A) This is the rating of the outlet. The outlet must function safely when this amount of current flows through it. It can be safely used for any current below this maximum.

(250V) The voltage written on an outlet is the maximum rated line voltage. In industry practice, it is common for wiring devices designed for 220-240 VAC to be tested at 250 VAC to allow use in any electrical system (at least that’s what I and my competitors have done). You don’t want to pay for separate tests at 220 VAC, 230 VAC and 240 VAC.

This tells you that the outlet is acceptable for the purpose you are using. It doesn’t tell you what the nominal voltage is (220, 230, 240 VAC).

And to answer John Dvorak’s question, devices around the world are tested to standards and the one I used was ANSI C84.1 ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT – VOLTAGE RANGES which sets the nominal (Range A) and temporary (Range B) limits for voltages indicates.

For 120 VAC this gives a maximum continuous voltage of 127 VAC and for 240 VAC systems 253 VAC. This would be consistent with other standards. Again, most device manufacturers would never pay for separate tests and would only test at that maximum voltage.

The EU voltage of 230 VAC +/- 10% is actually written to allow for 220, 230 or 240 VAC distribution systems. Actual voltage will be one of these three (but should all go to 230VAC) and regulated to ANSI C84.1 levels or local equivalent.

Regarding the power supply: 100-240 VAC means that it can be used at any voltage rating between 100 and 240 VAC. If marked with the UL or CSA symbol, it must be tested to the ANSI C84.1 voltage limits, so it has been tested to a minimum of 253 VAC. The European tests are equivalent, but I don’t have access to many to get the exact values.

~1A tells me the current draw is about 1A maximum. At 100VAC, that’s 100W, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were less. 100 watts at 240 VAC is a little less than 1/2 amp.

Together these tell us that the AC adapter would have no problems with this outlet.

To answer your question directly, yes, you can use it to charge your laptop with no problem. Any problem you have is outside of this area.
