PA Turnpike reminds travelers of 2020 toll increase
New tolls come into effect early on Sunday, January 5th.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (January 2, 2020) – The PA Turnpike Commission (PTC) today reminded customers that beginning at 12:01 am on January 5, toll rates for cash, E-ZPass and toll customers will increase by six percent. The increase, approved by commissioners last July, applies to all sections and extensions except for three “cashless” toll plazas in western PA.
The most common toll for a passenger car will increase from $1.40 to $1.50 for E-ZPass customers and from $2.30 to $2.50 for cash customers. The most common toll for a Class 5 tractor-trailer will increase from $3.70 to $4.00 for E-ZPass and from $16.30 to $17.30 for cash. The westbound Delaware River Bridge cashless toll will increase from $5.30 to $5.70 for E-ZPass customers and $7.20 to $7.70 for those using PA Turnpike TOLL BY PLATE elevated.
Since 2009, the PTC has increased tolls annually to meet a funding obligation under Law 44 of 2009. As a result, the PTC has committed more than $6 billion to PennDOT over the past decade. By law, these payments support mass transit nationwide, with the bulk of the funds supporting transit in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
The PA Turnpike Commission strives to provide a reliable roadway that exceeds the national average for ride quality, safety and incident response rates. More than 85 percent of PTC’s capital plan reflects a focus on mobility and security. To date, more than 144 miles of its road system, which turns 80 this year, has been reconstructed.

Massachusetts Toll Roads
The new prices come as the state moves to an all-electronic toll collection system that will eliminate the need for drivers to stop or even slow down to pay tolls.

How do I pay tolls in New England?
Highway Tolls
Payment is either by toll-ticket taken at the entrance to the highway, and surrendered and paid at the exit from it; or by toll booths located at several points along a highway that accept cash payments, usually in coins. Toll booths staffed by humans are being phased out.
Massachusetts Toll Roads
Here is a map of New England.
Here are some travel destinations from Boston, MA and the time it takes to drive there:
speed limits
The speed limit on most dual carriageways is 55 miles per hour (mph; 89 km/h). On four-lane interstates and similar highways, speed limits vary from 55 mph (89 km/h) to 70 mph (113 km/h).
Traffic often moves at speeds several miles per hour above the legal limit. Although police patrols often allow it, a driver who breaks the speed limit will always be fined, even if everyone else is doing it too.
speed control
Motorway speed control of drivers is controlled predominantly by local and state police mobile patrols (officers in police cruisers) and speed traps – officers who cannot be seen who monitor speeds with radars and stop and fine drivers for exceeding the speed limit .
Unmanned speed cameras are rare.
Fines can be substantial, hundreds of dollars per incident.
highway toll
Some motorways and expressways are subject to tolls. Payment is made either by toll card, which is taken at the entrance to the motorway and handed in and paid for at the exit; or through tollbooths at several points along a highway that accept cash payments, usually in coins. Toll booths manned by people are gradually being phased out.
Electronic toll collection devices
The E-ZPass electronic RFID transponder, mounted on a vehicle windshield, communicates with toll tracking transceivers at toll stations to record toll transactions. It is used throughout New England, New York, south to North Carolina, and west to Illinois.
Vehicles equipped with E-ZPass transponders can pass through toll plazas without stopping, in some cases without even slowing down to pass the toll plaza.
Each state has its own E-ZPass program. To use E-ZPass, you need to register and buy a transponder. Here’s how to do it for Massachusetts.
fuel
Unleaded gasoline (gasoline) with (R+M)/2 octane ratings from 87 to 92 and maybe 93, as well as clean diesel (ultra-low sulfur diesel) for motor fuel are easy to find in New England, with numerous gas stations throughout towns, cities, towns and on highways. Fares vary from station to station and state to state due to established fares and state taxes levied. Diesel fuel is generally more expensive than gasoline.
The fuel delivered is measured in US gallons. One US gallon = 3.78541 liters or 0.832674 imperial (UK) gallons.
Most gas stations have self-service pumps: insert your credit or debit card into the pump, insert the nozzle into your vehicle’s filler pipe, and pump your own pump. You can always pay cash for your fuel if you wish.
A small number of gas stations may have full service pumps where an attendant will pump the fuel for you, usually at a slightly higher cost. If you have problems filling up, you can always ask a supervisor for help, including at self-service pumps.
Park
In inner cities, parking on the street is usually regulated by parking meters or parking ticket machines. Parking, although expensive in some cases, is the best option for longer (2+ hour) parking sessions.
Parking can be strictly regulated at busy terminal stations such as airports, bus terminals, ferry terminals, etc. For example, if you plan to drive to Hyannis MA, park your car, and take a passenger ferry to Nantucket Island in the summer, you should reserve both your seat on the ferry and your parking spot at the dock in Hyannis. You may not be able to find other legal parking near the docks.

8 guidelines for using a toll road
1 The average toll in the United States is about five dollars. This rate varies greatly depending on the type of road you are traveling on. In general, the toll you have to pay is reasonable, either because the road is smoother and faster than the alternative, or because the road offers drivers a remarkable view or experience. 2 Speaking of remarkable experiences, there are a number of spectacular toll roads in the United States: 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, California; Lake Pontchartrain Dam in Louisiana; and Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Virginia Beach, Virginia are just a few examples. Rocky shoreline along 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove, California 3 Many toll roads have multiple vehicle categories. Vehicles with only two axles such as cars, vans, small pick-up trucks and SUVs pay a lower toll than 18-wheel transfer trucks or vehicles towing trailers. In some cases, motorcycles pay an even lower fee. 4 toll roads are very useful in two specific regions of the United States. In the sparsely populated Midwest and West, toll roads are an effective means of providing modern, well-maintained roads to residents, travelers, and tourists. In metro New England, toll roads provide commuters with a faster alternate route for a small fee. 5 toll roads are generally very well advertised, whether privately owned or managed by state departments of transportation. There is no need to worry about encountering a toll road unexpectedly. In most cases, toll roads are established as an alternative to another route and are not usually mandatory. 6 drivers pay tolls at tollbooths. The type of toll booth you encounter on a toll road depends on the size and popularity of the toll road. Tollbooths usually have multiple stations for cars to pass to pay their tolls, avoiding major congestion. Turnpike tollbooths in Pennsylvania 7 Today, many toll highways offer a booth-less toll, which registers your license plates and mails you an invoice. Alternatively, you can purchase a transponder if you know you will be using toll roads frequently. The most popular toll system is E-ZPass, which is used in 15 states, but local transponders also exist. North Carolina Highway 540. If you do not have the NC Quick Pass, you will receive an invoice in the mail (Mark Clifton) 8 Most tollbooths accept multiple forms of payment. Quarters, cash, debit and credit cards should be readily accepted; However, don’t expect to pull out your checkbook at a tollbooth.
That handful of change you pay to drive down a toll road can be money well spent. You’ll likely experience less traffic, a well-maintained road surface, and possibly a nice view.

Sections 1380a and 1380E of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code
Effective August 4, 2017 under the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code if you have suffered six or more unpaid toll violations or bills, or have accumulated $500 or more in unpaid tolls and fees, or are in default on a toll and fee payment plan from the PA Turnpike Commission (PTC) may suspend your vehicle registration. If you do not respond within 30 days, the PTC may notify PennDOT and a Section 1380(a) notice of suspension will be sent to you.
An additional suspension may be imposed if you have incurred additional unpaid toll charges while your Section 1380(e) registration was suspended.
All tolls must be paid to the PTC at 300 East Park Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17111, USA. Any questions regarding these tolls should be directed to the PTC by calling 1 (877) 736-6727 and dialing option 1.
The suspension remains in effect until compliance is confirmed by the PTC and all other applicable recovery requirements are met. If you fail to pay tolls and fees by the suspension effective date, an indefinite suspension will come into effect and your vehicle registration will be administratively suspended. A restoration fee will be charged before registration is restored.
The recovery fee is paid to the PTC at the time tolls and other fees are paid. The reinstatement fee is subject to a biennial consumer price index adjustment. Refer to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Schedule of Fees Form MV-70S for the current restoration fee amount or obtain a restoration requirements letter. The restoration request letter describes all the criteria that must be met before a vehicle’s registration can be restored.

The most common toll will rise from $1.60 to $1.70 for E-ZPass and from $3.90 to $4.10 for Toll By Plate, according to the Turnpike Commission, which approved the July tariff increase.
The 2022 toll increase is slightly smaller than the 6% increase for 2021. The Turnpike Commission said this is the first time in six years that the annual increase is less than 6%.
A trip calculator with the new toll schedule will be published on www.paturnpike.com.
Tolls have increased every year since 2009. Turnpike officials say the annual increases are necessary to meet funding commitments and to maintain and improve the turnpike system.
The Turnpike Commission says it is legally required to offer PennDOT $450 million in funding each year under the terms of Act 44, a 2007 state law.
Turnpike CEO Mark Compton said annual funding requirements will be reduced to $50 million starting in July.
“Finally we see a light at the end of this very long tunnel. Not only can we breathe a sigh of relief ourselves, but we can also begin to offer customers some relief from these heavier toll increases and refocus on substantial improvements to our roadway,” Compton said in a statement.

Pros: Very good overall. Everything as expected and lucky train was on time. Cons: As a first-time traveler, it would have been helpful for clearer communication when boarding the train. It was down an escalator to the Philadelphia platforms and customers were stopped and mobbed at the door to the platforms at the bottom of the escalator as we tried to get off the platforms. Luckily, people started moving and no one fell or stumbled. Anything that makes boarding hassle free and safe would be a huge improvement. Sometimes the different stations were not announced when the train stopped and sometimes the announcements were very difficult to understand. Customer service answered my questions about where to wait, but I would like more information on what the routes would be like and where to access the routes. I also feel like there is a kind of “insane rush” of customers getting to the train and boarding. If there was a way to create a boarding experience that didn’t make people feel rushed, that would help. I think if the track area could be made safer with some sort of barrier like the one used when boarding rides at Disney World or other major parks, riders could be “staged” 5 minutes in advance and riders put in place at the track area for easy boarding without “rush”. Tips: Pack light if you can. Audio book for longer trips.
