Creating matches at the top is unlikely to have this effect. Don’t follow suggestions blindly. If you don’t move for a while, the game will look for a match and then show you by shaking the candies. This is especially useful for younger and newer players, but don’t automatically use these matches. In most cases you will be able to find a better match yourself. Try to think ahead if possible. If you just do every match you can see without thinking, you won’t pass the harder levels. Here are the top combos in Candy Crush and what they do:

Striped Candy + Wrapped Candy: This combo erases three lines horizontally and vertically, instead of erasing a single vertical or horizontal line, or just erasing the surrounding eight candies.

Candy Crush Saga only gives you five lives. That means if you lose 5 times you can’t play anymore. You can buy extra lives, pay for unlimited lives for a limited time, or even beg your friends for lives. But if you don’t want to pay and you’ve already asked for your friends, the only option is to quit the game and wait for some time.

If you’re playing on the Android version or the iOS version of Candy Crush Saga, you can cheat a little and make the game think that time has passed when it hasn’t. It involves changing the time on your phone, but you don’t need to root, jailbreak or even install anything on your phone.

Since the ubiquitous app launched in 2012, it has been downloaded a staggering three billion times, making it one of the most requested games of all time – about as ravenous as Zucker itself.

However, it’s not just Americans who are hooked on Candy Crush Saga – the app is played across all seven continents, including Antarctica, with avid gamers entertained everywhere from the doctor’s office to the church. The players also put a lot back: every day eager fingers cross more than 146,000 miles within the app. That’s the equivalent of more than 52 trips from Florida to Washington State.

Candy Crush Saga has been downloaded more than 3 billion times – why are we all so addicted to it?

What exactly made Candy Crush Saga such an immersive sensation? “That’s the million-dollar question,” Rasmus Eriksson, Candy Crush’s senior level designer, told Yahoo Life. “In short, I think it’s the old saying of ‘easy to play, hard to master’. You can really play the game however you want.”

Eriksson says this style of tailoring is intentional. He and his team of more than a dozen designers may create levels and bubble witches, but they certainly don’t create Candy Crush Saga in a bubble. They intentionally created a game that appeals to players of all styles and skill levels by listening to what players have to say and taking their feedback to heart.

Are you the competitive type? Born to strategize? Or would you rather just sit back and relax, kill some time? Perhaps you are amused by captivating images and cute characters? Casual gamers and Candy Crush Saga connoisseurs all have one thing in common – you want to learn how to sail through levels and lick the competition (you know you’re keeping an eye on that leaderboard!). So here are Eriksson’s top tips for beating the game’s most notoriously challenging levels.

Get ready newbies: The eleventh level in Lemonade Lake is your first chance to experience just how intense Candy Crush Saga can get. The way to complete this conspicuous obstacle is to get your paws on as many special candies as you can – and then match them up to trigger seismic blasts.

“Special candies, or boosters as we like to call them, are very beneficial,” says Eriksson. “For example, you have the color bomb, the brown candy with the colored dots. This can affect the entire board. It can pick up candy from anywhere.”

And if you combine a color bomb with another special candy? Well, then you’re in the business of explosions galore.

Pro Tip: Try pairing Color Bombs with Striped Candies – or double down on Color Bombs alone.

Level 62: Clear a path and dash away!

Strategy will earn you the best rewards when it comes to playing Candy Crush Saga – whether it’s that twelfth level of Minty Meadow or beyond. And an important step is to line up as many identical candies as possible, also known as cascading.

“If you learn how to craft a lot of special candies — or we call them cascades — the level can play itself a little bit,” Eriksson says, describing how cascades set off explosions that automatically start sweeping the game board. “As a good player you learn to build cascades and you get a lot of freedom of movement.”

Match two candies or form cascades – you’ll know you’ve made them when words like ‘sweet’, ‘delicious’ and ‘divine’ appear on the screen – to set off a chain reaction involving powerful ingredients like cherries and hazelnuts causes fall. Cherries and hazelnuts bring you lots of points at once and are needed to pass the level. The faster they fall, the faster you win.

Pro tip: don’t focus on clearing all blockers – focus on clearing a path instead. Your path should be a few tiles wide under the ingredient. Once a cherry falls, aim to clear all of the candy in that column – then things should be smooth from there.

Level 190: Turn your strategy around and focus on squashing spawners

The fifth level in Caramel Cove is a sucker. The regular rules don’t apply on this devilish level. Regular games don’t bring you the amount of candy you need, so you need to improve your strategy in this case.

First create color bombs and try to combine them with other special candies. For example, try combining a striped and a wrapped candy.

Second, make sure you unlock all of the spawners above. Spawners are items that spawn other ingredients – and not necessarily the desired ingredients. Spawners can introduce frustrating blockers like jam and chocolate – delicious if you’re making recipes from the Candy Crush cookbook, but less than appetizing if you’re trying to beat this challenging level!

Pro tip: The easiest way to unlock spawners is to use the special candies placed at the bottom of the board.

You only have 13 moves to complete the tenth level in Fudge Islands, so use them wisely. Color Bombs alone won’t help you obliterate this one, so mix them up with Wrapped and Striped Candies and you’ll be golden.

Then keep an eye on those nasty spawners. “Make sure you always remove chocolate and magic blenders and dark chocolate, all those things that can multiply or grow on screen. Always try to get rid of them as soon as possible,” says Eriksson.

Pro tip: Don’t remove the frosting from under the bomb spawners. These candy bombs have very few ticks, so they explode very suddenly.

Level 1945: The key to mastering this expert level? Get the keys!

That’s right: your primary focus on the fifth level in Spicy Shop should be getting the keys. These are the keys to success in this almost impossible level of Candy Crush Saga.

The next thing you want to do is detonate the cake bombs by making – you guessed it – special candies. “It’s a very explosive level,” says Eriksson. “Create a ton of special candies and it will explode and it will be awesome.”

Pro tip: Don’t worry too much about getting rid of the jelly. Most of that is taken away by all the delicious explosions you ignite!

Level 5359: Get to the bottom of it – that is, the lowest level of blockers

If you’ve made it to the fourteenth level at Cocoa Courtyard, congratulations – you’ve arrived. Yes, you’re in the premier league of Candy Crush Saga players, which means you’ll need to pull out all the stops to secure a win here.

First, use the striped spawn candies, especially by combining them with other candies – aka those special candy combos that can be your best offense. Then be sure to remove that bottom blocker layer.

Pro tip: “To clear every type of blockage you can, you want to have no space, as much space as possible, and do it as quickly as possible,” says Eriksson. “This could mean not betting on low hanging fruit, instead focusing on getting as much out of the level as possible as it makes the later part of the level much easier.”

An interview with Simon Leung

Candy Crush is definitely taking the world by storm, with more than 66 million players worldwide.

But some guys may have reservations about delving into this colorful candy world because they see the game as “girly” and female-dominated.

This is indeed true, as a study by newzoo.com (2013) found. According to this, 60% of candy crushers are women.

But there are actually guys who have fallen prey to the colorful charms of the Candy Crush Saga game.

One of them is award-winning internet entrepreneur and internet keynote speaker Simon Leung, who actually managed to complete every single level of Candy Crush Saga on his Android smartphone.

I spoke to Simon and asked him a few questions about his passion for Candy Crush Saga. Read on to find out why this high-flying internet entrepreneur loves the game.

Would you consider yourself a “typical” Candy Crush player? Why why not?

I’m not really sure what makes a “typical” Candy Crush player, but I’ve noticed that a lot of people tend to play the game on the street, on the MRT, or on the bus, and even with their friends when they should really socialize. If that’s a typical player, then I’m not. I usually play Candy Crush when I’m alone and bored to pass the time – definitely not in public. I then try to be more sociable.

Why did you start playing Candy Crush? What made you keep playing the game?

I originally started playing Candy Crush in the fall of 2012 before it became popular. I stopped when I hit level 35 and it required payment to continue. I continued in Hong Kong in April this year when my sister and brother-in-law asked me to connect the game to my Facebook to give them tickets. At this point I started playing again after finding out that you can request tickets instead of paying to get to the next levels. I kept playing because for me the challenge of completing each level represents the daily challenges we face in life. Sometimes you fail because you made a bad choice or move. If you are persistent and don’t give up, even some of life’s most difficult periods can be overcome in the end.

How long did it take you to complete all levels?

There are currently 365 levels in the Android version. Starting with level 36 in April it took me about two months while playing the game in my spare time to complete all 365 levels. I don’t play it on Facebook but I heard there are about 100 more levels if you play on computer.

Have you spent money on Candy Crush in-app purchases?

No, I never spent money on Candy Crush.

How long did it take you to complete each of these levels?

I don’t remember which were the hardest, but the most time it took me to complete the hardest levels was probably about a day.

Any useful tips for those struggling through the game?

The best tip I can give is quite simply, don’t give up. Each level may have its difficulties, but they are all very passable. Sometimes it depends on luck how your candies are shuffled, but none of them are impossible. Just keep at it and you will get the victory!

What types of levels do you find the most difficult and why?

Every type of stage has its challenges. It all depends on how difficult the stages themselves are. Once you get close to the end, you’ll have to think your way through all the levels. Your challenge isn’t necessarily the type of level, but your patience is important to figure out how to complete each stage.

And what kind of obstacles were the most difficult for you and why?

While each obstacle has its own level of difficulty, I’ll probably vote for the chocolate machines as the most annoying simply because you can’t get rid of them, and they always seem to have a way of covering your planned next step in chocolate!

Now that you’ve finished Candy Crush, what will you be doing in your free time?

Getting back to running my internet marketing business, I may start a few more websites and projects with a few partners. I’ve also been busy with events and travel lately and have a few more countries to visit in the coming weeks. Of course, I could wait for some new levels to be released in the game, but I’d probably prefer to use my time more productively than playing the new Candy Crush levels, at least for the next few months.
