As told to me by my buddy doing a traditional body drop on his ’85 Toyota. “Man, get a stool, sit on the middle hump and cut the cab all the way around if the body comes off and hits the ground, grab some sheet metal and fill in the holes, easy as that!” He made it sound pretty easy, but he’s been dropping his body for about 3 months. Ensuring you have the know-how to properly cut and reassemble the body is no easy task, because once you’ve cut it, you’re in it to the end. I could never do it alone, but luckily I have a few buddies who are experts in this field.

Stock Floor Body Drop Basics

What exactly is a stock floor body drop? What is involved in the process?

Now that this is the newest way to put your truck’s rockers on the ground, we thought it was time to shed some light on the body drop mystery and answer some of those questions. We’ve teamed up with Cary Iaccino and the IF Customs crew to show you the basic process of everything that goes into the chassis and body mods of a stock body drop.

The basic idea of ​​a stock floor body drop is to put the rockers on the floor by extensively modifying the stock frame or building a completely new frame. On a modified frame, the body mounts can be moved down and the top of the frame cut away so the rocker sits flush with the bottom of the frame. This allows the floor of the truck to be modified only around problem areas, such as e.g. B. the transversal tunnel, the drive train, the firewall and possibly the fuel tank. Benefits include retention of interior space, more headroom, stock ride characteristics, stock carpet, and most importantly, a lower ride height.

This may sound like a modification that anyone who can weld can do, but anytime you’re messing with the factory frame structure, you better know exactly what you’re doing. The handling, safety, reliability and appearance of your truck are at stake when the stock frame is extensively modified. This is not intended to be a do-it-yourself how-to article. This is intended to show the basics of the process in detail to help you understand what is involved. A stock body drop is more labor intensive than a traditional body drop, and all other clearance issues have yet to be resolved. The bed is generally handled using traditional body drop methods: cut out the bottom of the bed and raise it 2 to 5 inches depending on the size of your body drop.

The main areas we will focus on are the frame mods, the cab mods, the engine bay mods and the bed. For this particular body drop, the frame was cut and wrapped, the tranny tunnel lifted and the firewall tubbed for 24 seconds. The engine bay was taken care of by relocating everything that got in the way including the brake booster, computer and fuse box, battery, wiper cover and anything else that got in the way of the wheel/tire combination.
