We measured the heat with a Fluke 62 Max+ IR thermometer. It is generally used in professional environments where temperature accuracy is really important. Based on that, we felt more than confident using it to measure the heat emitted by a gaming console.
We know from other thermal camera tests that the temperature tends to stabilize shortly after the game starts. To be on the safe side, our test runs lasted a full hour.
Well, what the Xbox does has a big impact on the amount of heat it generates, so instead of putting on a movie or streaming content, we played the graphically rich Watch Dogs 2.
ON THE TABLE (BEST CASE SCENARIO)
We have created a “best case” situation for the table layout. There was nothing on the table but the console. Typically, a coffee table has drinks (which could spill), papers, games, and many other items that would restrict airflow. We also kept a room temperature of 72 degrees.
The starting temperature of our Xbox was 80.8 degrees, after 30 minutes the temperature was 101.4, and after 1 hour the Xbox had only risen to 102.2 degrees. More than just a baseline, this test gave us an idea of how the Xbox would perform under ideal circumstances.
DISPLAYED ON THE WALL
We recorded a launch temperature of around 83 degrees Fahrenheit. After 30 minutes, the Xbox hit 102 degrees, and we found that it hadn’t climbed at all past the hour mark. This test shows that the temperatures are about the same when you have the console mounted on the wall or when you leave the console on an open table at best.
BEHIND THE TV
We have done our best to make this a “worst case” situation, to reflect a domestic situation and to give you the most unbiased perspective. Before starting the test, we left the TV on to keep it as warm as possible.
The starting temperature was around 81 degrees. The temperature climbed to 106.4 degrees after 30 minutes, or about 4 degrees higher than our best-case setup. By the time we hit the hour mark, the temperature had stabilized because the Xbox stayed at 106 degrees.
IN THE MEDIA CABINET (MOST COMMON LOCATION)
We have a relatively open media cabinet with a TV stand on top. The starting temperature was 79 degrees, the coolest starting point from all our tests. After 30 minutes, the Xbox warmed up to 102.8 degrees. Once the hour mark hit, the Xbox was up to 106.4 degrees. The temperature didn’t stabilize like it did in tests where the Xbox was wall-mounted, and would likely continue to rise as more heat built up in the air around it.
SUMMARY
Overall, the One S is a very cool console (literally). Our tests on the PS4 Pro show that the Pro performs 10 degrees warmer. Compared to the original Xbox One, which averages around 110-115 degrees, the One S is also noticeably cooler.
The Xbox 360 has been known to come into the 170’s and even the solder inside is melting. The Xbox One S was well within the safe zone (about 60 degrees of buffer before you’d worry about overheating) in all of these setups.
