It is true that no e-cigarette is completely risk-free, but due to the strict controls involved in their manufacture, e-cigarettes are generally considered safer.

E-cigarettes do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, both of which are the most harmful particles in tobacco smoke. The liquid and vapor contain some potentially harmful chemicals (particularly liquids flavored with a “cream” theme), but they are at far lower concentrations than tobacco smoke.

Public Health England’s independent review of evidence in 2015 found that vaping is around 95% less harmful than smoking.

The Royal College of Physicians reported similar findings in a recent report, and the NHS has even suggested making e-cigarettes available on prescription.

There have been cases of e-cigarettes exploding, but luckily these are rare occurrences. As with all rechargeable electrical devices, if you practice safe charging and use the device judiciously, the risk of something going wrong is minimized.

You should buy your e-cigarette products from a reputable retailer. Regardless of which dealer you use, UK safety regulations should be followed.

Vaping vs smoking

In 2016 there was a study by German researchers that compared the health risks of vaping and tobacco smoking. The parallel study concluded that e-cigarettes are much safer than smoking.

The only issue raised in the study was the presence of formaldehyde in some of the e-cigarettes tested. Researchers concluded that this chemical was formed during the manufacturing process by heating propylene glycol.

There is little choice between the big brands of e-liquid. The main differences appear only in the flavors (some are better than others) and the proportions of the ingredients mixed.

In some flavors the amount of propylene glycol is higher than in others.

Juul launches its first Bluetooth-connected vape in the UK after testing the device in Canada. The Juul C1 connects to an Android app that allows owners to monitor how much they’ve been vaping, lock the device so no one can use it, and locate the device if they misplace it. Juul told the Financial Times that there could be the ability to set usage limits and limit usage in areas like schools in the future, but both features aren’t available yet.

The C1, which retails for £24.99 (about $30 USD), is far from being the first Bluetooth-connected vape. Pax, the big name in weed vapes, already has a couple of app-connected devices, one of which offers controls that allow you to limit the strength of the vape.

Although e-cigarettes have been around for more than a decade, vaping rates have skyrocketed in recent years, particularly among teenagers. E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco product among young people – around 2.1 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in 2017 – far surpassing traditional combustible cigarettes.

Of particular concern is JUUL, a popular vape device that comes in fun flavors, looks like a flash drive, and charges in a USB port. JUUL delivers a high level of nicotine, making the product extremely addictive. The company that makes and markets JUUL recently surpassed a $10 billion valuation faster than any other company, including Facebook. JUUL sales now account for more than half of the vape market.

The FDA announced that it would not only take action against the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors, but also against the “kid-friendly marketing and attractiveness of these products”, because “we see clear indications that the use of e-cigarettes by young people is decreasing And after recent unexplained illnesses and deaths attributed to vaping, the CDC and the American Medical Association are raising serious concerns and recommending that people avoid vaping altogether.

Teachers, health professionals and parents are alarmed by the growing popularity of vaping among young people and attempts to educate not only teenagers but themselves as it is all so new.

What is vaping?

Vaping is the inhalation and exhalation of the vapor produced by the heated nicotine liquid (often referred to as the “juice”) of an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette or electronic cigarette), vape pen, or personal vaporizer. It’s also commonly called JUULing (pronounced jewel-ing).

What began as a smoking cessation aid has quickly grown into a popular – and addictive – product in its own right. Sarper Taskiran, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Child Mind Institute, attributes the recent surge in popularity to packaging and advertising. “Teens are looking for innovation and are attracted to sleek design and ease of use,” he says. “You look like an Apple product.”

Although vaping companies strongly deny that they are marketing to young people, critics mention such features in their advertisements as youthful images and colors, animations, actors who appear to be under 21, and suggestions that vaping will make you happier and your social status improved.

Although some of the health risks associated with vaping appear to be less serious than with traditional combustible cigarettes (there is no tar, for example), there are still risks.

Some known risks of vaping are:

E-cigarettes contain a lot of nicotine. According to the company’s website, a JUULpod’s nicotine content is equivalent to a pack of cigarettes.

Because of these high levels of nicotine, vaping is extremely addictive – and teenagers are already more prone to addiction than adults as their brains are still developing, making them more likely to get used to drugs and alcohol.

Addiction can impair the ability to concentrate. dr Taskiran has observed this in the teens he works with, who report that vaping initially increases their alertness and alertness, but then experiences a decrease in attention span. For example, one student was able to pass the ACT exams for practice, but after six months of JUULing, “she can’t sit still because she starts to crave, runs out of questions and just starts fidgeting.”

E-cigarettes and similar devices contain carcinogenic compounds, and a recent study found significantly elevated levels of carcinogens in the urine of teens who vaped.

One study found that vaping actually causes lung irritation similar to that of smokers and people with lung diseases, and damages vital immune system cells.

There have been several deaths and hundreds of cases of lung disease attributed to vaping. It is currently unclear whether the cause is pirated products containing THC or CBD oil, or legal nicotine cartridges. The CDC and American Medical Association recommend people to avoid vaping completely while this is being investigated.

Taskiran points out that vaping increases heart rate and blood pressure, which can increase circulatory problems. A teenager he works with started vaping and found his swim times decreased because he could no longer maintain the heart rate needed for swimming.

Leaving little odor, e-cigarettes are particularly easy to hide and use discreetly even in public places, including schools. Children are also increasingly vaping marijuana, which brings its own health risks.

Why Parents Should Worry

One problem with vaping is that teenagers hear that it’s not as harmful to their health as smoking cigarettes, and many think there’s no harm. “They really believe that it’s mostly aromas and that they’re breathing a comfortable gas,” says Dr. Taskiran.

A study of 12th grade students found that children who vaped (but had not previously smoked) were more than four times more likely to “move away from the perception that cigarettes pose a major risk of harm.” The study and others like it have shown that teens who vape are much more likely to start smoking cigarettes.

The packaging does little to convey the risks. “They are very alluring the way they look. It’s not transparent at all. It says 5% nicotine, which doesn’t sound like anything, so teenagers think 95% is water weight or vapor,” laments Dr. Taskiran.

Plus, he points out, smoking never stopped being cool. It’s still portrayed positively in movies, and JUUL in particular has rebranded it to make vaping an even cooler alternative. But vaping isn’t just for the cool kids – lots of teenagers are curious (with flavors like mango, cucumber and cream, who wouldn’t be?) and given the opportunity, they’ll give it a try.

Sarah, a mother of two in Ann Arbor, MI, was shocked when she recently received a call from the principal of her son’s middle school, urging her to get him immediately for “an emergency removal and suspension.” “. He and two friends had been caught vaping around the school grounds after school, and a passing parent snapped photos and sent them to administration.

Though they found no equipment on their son — a straight A-grade student with no criminal record — the school, like many others, is taking a tough stance. “The director knows that vaping is rampant and shared that downtown Ann Arbor stores sell to teenagers without asking for ID,” Sarah shared. “But she feels the need to let my son and his friends know it’s a really, really big deal.”

At this school, students caught vaping are required to sign codes of conduct, attend a teenage drug class, and are banned from participating in sporting events, clubs, or special events for the remainder of the year. If the kids had been across the street, not on school property, it would have been a different scenario. But the principal said if they had been in high school and not middle school, she would have called the police.

Sarah remembers what it was like to be a teenager so she doesn’t think it’s a big deal to try, but she worries about the addiction. “Addiction runs in my family and I worry about my son. Of course, I’m also concerned about the damage the chemicals can do to his lungs and body,” she says.

Although some places are tightening on-site restrictions, children can still go to a website, click a button that says they are at least 21, and shop online. “The majority of young people I see are buying JUUL over the internet,” says Dr. Taskiran.

How to talk to kids about vaping

dr Taskiran advises parents to educate themselves first so they know what they’re talking about and have an inquisitive and inquisitive approach to their teen’s experiences. “The most important thing is to keep the dialogue going,” he says. “Declarative statements like ‘It’s bad for you’ just end the conversation.”

dr Taskiran recommends starting the conversation more generally by asking if a lot of kids vape at school. Once the conversation has started, you can slowly move on to asking things like, “What’s your experience with this? How are the flavors?” He also suggests getting a picture of what they know (or think they know) about the product, which gives you a chance to start educating.

The silver lining of Sarah’s experience with her son is that he actually did tell his father about the experience even before he knew he’d been caught. “They talked about it for an hour after I fell asleep. He told my husband that it was the first time he had tried it and that it hurt his throat and he didn’t like it.” The next morning, she got the call from the director before her son had a chance to tell her himself . “He’s a great kid and doesn’t really get into trouble except when he’s talking in class because he’s bored. My goal has always been open communication and keeping him talking. He has!”

Of course, while parents must educate themselves, the responsibility is not solely theirs. “Schools need to do the same and provide educational strategies for teachers and students,” says Dr. Taskiran. Prevention is much easier than treatment later, he says, noting that peer education can play a particularly important role.

If you are concerned that your child has become addicted, there are many treatment options. dr Taskiran recommends seeking advice from a clinician knowledgeable in addiction treatments. “It’s a real nicotine addiction,” he says. “People usually think this is different than cigarette use – but it can be more serious than cigarette use.”

What are the risks for teens who vape?

While it may be true that vaping is less dangerous than smoking cigarettes because the vaporized aerosols contain fewer toxic and carcinogenic chemicals than cigarette smoke, the aerosol from vaping is not benign. In addition to nicotine, some dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde are formed when nicotine liquid is heated to high temperatures. Vaping is linked to adolescents being more likely to try cigarettes, which causes more harm. Last year we learned that vaping was causing an outbreak of severe lung injury linked to vitamin E acetate, which is found in vaping devices that emit tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. How do I know if my teen is vaping?

Unlike cigarettes, which come in standard forms and have a distinct smell, e-cigarettes are harder to spot. Some vaping devices look like everyday objects like USB drives, clocks, pens, and markers. Keep an eye out for parts like refill pods that contain the vape juice, atomizers, batteries, and chargers. Most kids prefer sweet flavored vapes. Catching fruit or candy-like smells could be an indication of vaping. Vaping also makes users’ mouths dry, causing your teen to drink more than usual. If you are a parent of a school-age child, chances are your child has been exposed to teen-targeted vaping ads. Your child also probably knows someone, even a friend, who vapes. Get the facts before you have a conversation.

Many teens who vape think they are just using harmless water vapor. In order to understand what they are using and what they are going through, it is important to educate yourself about vaping before talking about it.

Most vapes contain nicotine. Many even say “nicotine-free” on the label. Most teenagers initially think they can quit whenever they want and will never get hooked. And many more are starting to smoke cigarettes, a product that kills half of its users. In fact, a teen who vapes is four times more likely to start smoking.

Additionally, teens who vape nicotine or THC from marijuana may experience learning and memory problems. And the chemicals used to create vape flavors can damage the lungs, heart, and immune system, whether nicotine is present or not.1

Invite your child to speak, be patient and listen.

If your child is caught vaping or admits to vaping, try to remain calm and nonjudgmental. Listen, don’t lecture.

Try to understand her feelings.

Avoid showing judgment.

Keep asking questions and checking that you understand everything.

This is an excellent opportunity to talk about it and learn why they did it. Say things like, “Tell me more about what got you into vaping.” and “What are some of the reasons?” Let her know you’re concerned about her vape use increasing, but try to encourage her to keep talking by asking open-ended, nonjudgmental questions.
