The Best Way To Clean Squonk Bottles – Vapouround
In many ways, squonk mods offer the ultimate compromise between flavor potential and e-liquid capacity, but they do require a little extra maintenance, especially after heavy use.
Some users may notice an aftertaste when a particular squonk bottle has been used for a long period of time, and while the obvious solution is to replace it with a new one, they can be difficult to source for some proprietary bottles and in other cases, are just pretty expensive. Luckily, there are ways to significantly extend the life of any bottle.
As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure. For this reason, we recommend thoroughly soaking your bottle in warm water and then letting it air dry each time you want to switch flavors. This isn’t always practical, but it’s a good habit to get into and minimizes the need for thorough cleaning methods.
Let’s start with something you’d better avoid.
Isopropyl alcohol:
Isopropyl alcohol is commonly used as a cleaning solution and is a boon for many applications. Unfortunately, we have found that this is not the case with squonk bottles. In our experience, the flavor of isopropyl alcohol lingers on the silicone even after a thorough rinse, and you certainly don’t want it getting into your e-liquid.
Now for the good stuff!
Everclear:
Everclear is a 190% spirit that we’ve found to be particularly good for cleaning squonk bottles. Simply submerge your heavily used bottles in a spirit-filled Tupperware, close the lid and let soak for 2-5 hours.
After soaking, rinse the bottles thoroughly with warm water and then allow them to air dry. We have found this method to make bottles as good as new even after going through this process more than once.
The only downside to this method is that Everclear is quite hard to find due to excessive demand at the time of writing. So if you don’t already have one, this might be difficult.
Boiling water:
The boiling water method is our favorite because it’s essentially free and can be repeated as many times as you like with minimal effort.
Place all affected bottles in a large ceramic mug, boil water with a kettle and carefully fill the mug. Be sure to fill each bottle with boiling water. Let the bottles soak for 10 minutes and then repeat the process 3-5 times depending on how dirty the bottles are. Then allow the bottles to air dry, which usually takes less than an hour. You don’t even have to worry about rinsing!
We find this method works just as well as Everclear with no obvious downsides. In some extreme cases, e.g. B. if bottles are exposed to sunlight or filled with e-liquid for a long time, these methods will not work. If that’s the case, unfortunately, it’s time to find some new bottles.
However, if your bottles haven’t passed the point of no return, you should now be able to keep your squonk mods fresh for much longer.
5 EASY WAYS TO CLEAN A SQUONK BOTTLE
Sometimes (e.g. when you want to switch flavors in your squonker) you may find that a trace of the previous liquid contaminates your vape. Occasionally you might notice a slightly off-beat or “open” taste that might completely ruin that bottle of premium (and expensive!) e-juice you saved for a “treat”. This is something that drives me completely nuts and I’ve really stopped the rage at squonking more than twice and reached for an RTA or Dripper instead.
Why is this? am i just crazy Well, yes, but that’s not entirely to blame. You see, there are tons of reasons why your vape just isn’t right, from old liquids and bacteria trapped in your 510 and squonk tubes to “sucking back” (oo-er) microscopic ones cotton fibers into your bottle. The list is as long as your arm. Most of the time, though, and through no fault of our own, e-liquid can just make your bottles smell. Usually pretty much like the e-liquid inside. And no matter how many times you rinse them under the tap, sometimes it seems like it’s never going to go away. Call Red Astaire and Heisenberg here.
NO PANIC !!
A rage quit and squonk flounce is really not necessary. Just try these simple methods below. While none are 100% guaranteed (some liquids just never go away), each gives you the best chance of extending the life of your bottles, hopefully saving you money and a lot of gritting along the way.
OPERATION: SQUONK CLEAN
1: dish soap and warm water
Yes. It is obvious. But you’d be surprised how many people just don’t care. A thorough washing up session every three days is the first line of defense to keep those odors at bay. While our Goldilocks squonk bottles are manufactured to FDA and LFGB certification standards (so leaching is not a concern), we recommend giving your bottles a thorough scrubbing (perhaps with a small bottle brush) with dish soap and warm water every three days. then a damn good rinse under the faucet. Let them air dry in a well-ventilated place and your bottles will stay fresher longer than if you didn’t. Fact.
2: White Vinegar
The next level up the odor removal scale is the staple everyone should have, the magic stuff known to experts as “white vinegar.” This stuff is great for cleaning all kinds of things, and squonk bottles are definitely no exception. Simply fill your bottle (or a container if you’re making several) 3/4 full with the vinegar and top up with warm to hot water. Soak or leave overnight, then rinse and wash as above. In most cases, this is enough to restore your squonk or squonk refill to its original, fresh-tasting shine and pleasure.
3: bicarbonate / baking soda
Again, this method is relatively easy and quick to use if you’re using something you may already have in your household. Simply mix a solution of baking/bicarbonate (2-3 teaspoons per cup) with warm water, fill or soak your bottles overnight. Again, unless you like the taste of bicarb, wash, rinse and air dry until well done. This is especially handy if you don’t have either of the last two method ingredients on hand.
4: vodka/ isopropyl alcohol
Pure alcohols are proven disinfectants, with isopropyl (particularly when mixed 70/30% with distilled water) being a particularly effective cleaning and disinfecting solution (p8-13; https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/ PDF/rr/rr5116.pdf ).
If you don’t have isopropyl handy, cheaper vodka will do, both of which are capable of dispelling stubborn odors. Simply wash, rinse and fill or soak your squonk bottles with the alcohol of your choice (definitely don’t drink the isopropyl) and let it work wonders overnight. Then wash, rinse and dry as above. Easy.
5: Sterilizing liquids and tablets for baby bottles / dentures
An excellent way to sanitize and clean your squonk tubes and bottles, but be sure to wash and rinse thoroughly at the end. Simply fill a container with the required amount of pills/liquid (per manufacturer’s instructions) and soak your squonk items in it for the length of time indicated on the labels. As always, wash, rinse and dry thoroughly before use and before long you’ll be #squonklyfe popping again.
I have found prosthetic tablets to be a great “travel option” when going to Expos and Vapefest as they are small, portable and really easy to acquire. You never have to get caught in a socially awkward squonk-based scenario ever again.
Aside from the above best practices, there are a few other links field ideas that people swear by such as: B. Mouthwash mixed with 3 teaspoons of English mustard. An interesting combination, and maybe a good idea for a liquid, but I think I’ll stick with the Milton or Sterident tablets for now….
But sometimes, after all of the above, a bottle just doesn’t come back to its luster. At this point we have to say goodbye and move on. But when it comes to new bottles I like to play it safe and want something that will at least give me a head start.
