The Fire TV Cube also has an Alexa smart speaker built into its base, so if you don’t already own an Amazon Echo, you’re basically getting 2 purchases in one.

Google Chromecast Ultra The Chromecast uses the “dongle” approach like the Fire Stick, rather than being a standalone unit like the Fire TV Box. It’s a slightly larger design than the Fire Stick and they’ve used it to include an Ethernet port.

The Ethernet port comes in handy when you’ve grown out of 1080P resolution, as Chromecast supports all 4K and HDR video formats with Google TV. It is also compatible with Google Home for voice commands.

Unlike previous versions, the Chromecast with Google TV has its own remote control. This is a step up from having to control everything from your phone or tablet using the Google Home app and integrations with supported third-party apps.

Apple TV 4K Let me start this section by saying that I’m biased towards the Apple TV sets from the start. They are unnecessarily expensive and will likely be phased out soon.

The features you pay for that come with the Apple TV devices are gradually becoming available with all other popular streaming devices via Apple’s downloadable apps. Among these features is being able to stream many media from your iOS devices including from your iTunes library. Many smart TVs now come with Apple AirPlay 2 support, and the Fire TV and Roku were recently announced to have Apple TV apps.

You can do almost everything (down to streaming from the most popular media services) that the other popular devices do. It also has Siri built in, just like Fire TV has Alexa and Google Chromecast has Google Home.

That being said, and simply put, this is an option that I’ll have to explain to you, but it’s not recommended.

Roku Premiere This is another easy-to-use, simple solution like the Fire Stick. However, the Roku design is somewhat flawed.

The device itself is a small, lightweight box that uses dangling cables – one that goes to the TV’s HDMI port and one that acts as a power cord. The HDMI cable does not usually allow itself to be laid flat on your TV stand as it is so light that it dangles from the cable itself. There’s an included adhesive strip that sticks it in place, but when you move it there’s another problem.

However, the Roku Premiere has a great user interface. Some may like the interaction better than other streaming media devices. You have about as many apps available as Fire TV, but Fire TV wipes them out in the gaming apps department.

The remote control isn’t quite as good as the Fire TV remote either. It uses IR technology, so you need direct line of sight to control the Roku. In this case you cannot hide the box behind your TV. There’s the option (for quite a bit of a price hike) to get the Roku Premiere Plus, which solves this problem.

How do I know if my TV is HD? Today your TV is most likely HD, especially if you have a flat screen. An HDTV is simply any TV that displays a screen resolution of 720p or higher. As of 2018, they account for 85% of all televisions in use. One way to tell if your TV is an HD TV is to look up your model number online. A simple Google search for the model number will usually take you to the manufacturer’s specs page for your TV. You should be able to find the model number on the back of the TV itself. If the resolution is at least 720p (1280 x 720), you have an HD TV.

Sanyo was founded when Toshio Iue, Konosuke Matsushita’s brother-in-law and also a former Matsushita employee, borrowed an unused Matsushita machine in 1947 and used it to make bicycle generator lamps. Sanyo was founded in 1949; In 1952 it manufactured Japan’s first plastic radio and in 1954 Japan’s first pulsator washing machine.[4] The company’s name means three oceans in Japanese and refers to the founder’s ambition to sell its products worldwide across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Sanyo in America[ edit ]

In 1969, Howard Ladd became Executive Vice President and COO of Sanyo Corporation. Ladd introduced the Sanyo brand to the United States in 1970. The goal of selling Sanyo products worldwide was realized in the late 1970s after Sanyo introduced home audio equipment, car stereos and other consumer electronics to the North American market. The company launched an extensive television advertising campaign.

Ladd negotiated a purchase of audio equipment maker Fisher Electronics by Sanyo in May 1977. Under Ladd’s leadership, Fisher Corporation grew into a multi-million dollar consumer electronics company under Sanyo. The new, profitable Fisher Corporation moved its headquarters from New York to Ladd’s Los Angeles. Ladd was named President and CEO of the combined Sanyo/Fisher Corporation in 1977 and served until 1987.

Ladd was instrumental in promoting quadraphonic sound audio equipment for the American market at Sanyo, producing 4-channel audio equipment in both SQ and Matrix formats. He said: “We make all kinds of Quadsonic devices because that’s the business we’re in… let the consumer buy the kind of software they prefer and we provide them with the hardware , on which he can play it.”

Sanyo experienced tremendous growth during Ladd’s tenure in the 1970s; Annual sales increased from US$71.4 million (equivalent to US$462,537,947 in 2021) in 1972 to US$855 million (equivalent to US$3,552,176,020 in 2021) in 1978.[8 ]

After a fairly slow sales line in their own V-Cord video format, Sanyo adopted Sony’s Betamax videocassette format around 1977 with initial success, including SuperBeta and Beta Hi-Fi models. From about 1984 the production was switched completely to VHS.

In 1976, Sanyo expanded its North American presence with the purchase of Whirlpool Corporation’s television business, Warwick Electronics, which made televisions for Sears.

In 1986, Sanyo’s U.S. subsidiary merged with Fisher to form Sanyo Fisher (U.S.A.) Corporation (later renamed Sanyo Fisher Company). The mergers made the overall organization more efficient, but also resulted in the departure of certain key executives, including Ladd, who had first introduced the Sanyo name to the United States in the early 1970s.

In 1982, Sanyo began selling the MBC-1000 series of CP/M computers.[13] In 1983[14] it introduced the MBC-550 PC, the cheapest IBM PC compatible PC at the time,[15] but its lack of compatibility drove Sanyo out of the market and no subsequent models were released.

Corporate culture of the 1990s[ edit ]

A 1992 article on “Sanyo Style” described that Sanyo employs an extensive socialization process for new employees to help them become accustomed to Sanyo’s corporate culture.[16] New employees complete a five-month course in which they eat together and sleep in a lodging. They learn everything from basic job requirements to company expectations for personal grooming and the appropriate way to dress for their colleagues and supervisors.

Technically, Sanyo has good relations with Sony and supported the Betamax video format from its invention until the mid-1980s (the best-selling VCR in the UK was the Sanyo VTC5000 in 1983) while also producing the VHS video format for Fisher brands in the early 1980s and later was an early adopter of the highly successful Video8 camcorder format. More recently, however, Sanyo decided against supporting Sony’s format, the Blu-ray Disc, and instead supported Toshiba’s HD DVD. However, this was ultimately unsuccessful as Sony’s Blu-ray triumphed.[17]

In North America, Sanyo exclusively manufactured CDMA cellphones for the Sprint PCS brand in the United States and for Bell Mobility in Canada.

Acquisition[ edit ]

The 2004 Chūetsu earthquake severely damaged Sanyo’s semiconductor factory, and as a result, Sanyo recorded a huge financial loss for that year. Fiscal 2005 financial results recorded a net profit loss of 205 billion yen. In the same year, the company announced a restructuring plan called the Sanyo Evolution Project, which launched a new corporate vision to transform the company into an environmental company and invest in strong products such as rechargeable batteries, solar photovoltaic, air conditioning, hybrid car batteries and key consumer electronics like the Xacti camera, projectors and mobile phones.

Sanyo showed signs of recovery after reporting positive operating income of 2.6 billion yen. Sanyo remains the world’s leading manufacturer of rechargeable batteries. Recent product innovations in this area include the Eneloop Low Self-Discharge NiMH battery, a “hybrid” rechargeable NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) battery that uses cells straight out of the box without an initial charge cycle, unlike typical NiMH cells can hold a charge significantly longer than batteries using standard NiMH battery designs. The Eneloop line competes with similar products like Rayovac’s Hybrid Rechargeable line.

On November 24, 2006, Sanyo announced heavy losses and job cuts.[18]

Tomoyo Nonaka, a former NHK spokeswoman who was appointed to chair the company, resigned in March 2007.[19] The President, Toshimasa Iue, also resigned in April of the same year; Effective April 2007, Seiichiro Sano was appointed President of the Company. In October 2007, Sanyo canceled a ¥110 billion sale of its semiconductor business, blaming the global credit crunch for the decision and stating that after considering its other options, it decided to keep the business and develop it as part of its portfolio. [20]

Sanyo’s three-year restructuring project

In 2008, Kyocera acquired Sanyo’s mobile phone division.[21]

On November 2, 2008, Sanyo and Panasonic announced that they had agreed on the main terms of a proposed acquisition that would make Sanyo a subsidiary of Panasonic.[22] They became a subsidiary of Panasonic on December 21, 2009.[5]

In 2010, Sanyo sold its semiconductor operations to ON Semiconductor.[23]

On July 29, 2010, Panasonic entered into an agreement to acquire the remaining interest in Panasonic Electric Works and Sanyo stock for US$9.4 billion.

By March 2012, parent company Panasonic plans to end the Sanyo brand, but it will remain on some products where the Sanyo brand still has value to consumers.[26]

In August 2013, American multinational manufacturer Whirlpool Corporation bought a 51 percent controlling stake in Chinese company Hefei Royalstar Sanyo, a 2000 joint venture between Japan’s Sanyo and Chinese state-owned investment company Hefei, for US$552 million.[27 ]

The Sanyo HIT (Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin Layer) solar cell consists of a monothin crystalline silicon wafer surrounded by ultra-thin amorphous silicon layers.[28]

Sanyo Energy opened its solar panel assembly plants in Hungary and Mexico in 2004 and produced $213 million worth of solar panels in 2006. In 2007, Sanyo completed a new unit at its solar panel plant in Hungary, which should triple its annual capacity to 720,000 units by 2008.[29]

The Dorog plant, outside of Budapest, will be Sanyo Electric’s largest solar module manufacturing facility in the world.[29]

In late September 2008, Sanyo announced its decision to establish a manufacturing facility for solar bars and wafers (the building blocks for silicon solar cells) in Inagi, Japan. The facility was commissioned in October 2009 and is expected to reach full production capacity of 70 megawatts (MW) of solar wafers per year by April 2010. Sanyo and Nippon Oil decided to form a joint venture named Sanyo Eneos Solar Co., Ltd. to set up ., for the production and sale of thin-film solar modules. The new joint venture initially started production and sales on a scale of 80 MW while gradually expanding its production capacity. For this joint project, Sanyo relied on its solar cell technologies based on the technology acquired through the development of the HIT solar cell.[30]

Sanyo is also responsible for building the Solar Ark.

Rechargeable batteries[ edit ]

Sanyo pioneered the manufacture of nickel-cadmium batteries in 1964, nickel-metal hydride (NiMh) batteries in 1990, lithium-ion batteries in 1994, and lithium-polymer batteries in 1999.[31] In 2000, it acquired Toshiba’s NiMh business, including the Takasaki factory.[32] Since Panasonic acquired Sanyo, ownership of the Takasaki factory has been transferred to FDK Corporation.[33] [Better source needed]

Batteries for electric vehicles[ edit ]

Sanyo supplies NiMh batteries to Honda, Ford, Volkswagen and PSA Peugeot Citroen. Sanyo is developing NiMH batteries for hybrid electric vehicles with the Volkswagen Group, while their lithium-ion batteries for plug-in HEVs will also be found in vehicles in the Suzuki fleet.[34]

Sanyo planned to increase monthly production of NiMH batteries for hybrid vehicles from 1 million units to up to 2.5 million by the end of fiscal 2005.[35]

Panasonic reintroduced the Sanyo brand in India with the launch of the Sanyo LED TV range on August 8, 2016.[36] On July 11, 2017, Sanyo unveiled its range of Smart TVs on Amazon Prime Day.
