Orìṣà devotees strive to attain Ase through iwa-pele, gentle and good character, and in return they experience alignment with the Ori, which others would describe as inner peace and contentment with life. Ase is divine energy coming from Olodumare, the creator deity, and manifested through Olorun, who rules the heavens and is associated with the sun. Life could not exist without the sun, just as life cannot exist without some degree of ash. AwakenIng to Your Divine Self: What is Ori Consciousness?
When I was about 12 years old, I began to realize that I had superpowers. At least that’s what I called her. I found that I knew things before they happened and that I could make things happen if I put my mind to them. I could also ask for things and they would fall into my lap. I was baptized that year but I wasn’t very religious. I somehow knew there was something else. Somewhere deep I had decided that I would become a Christ… A goddess on earth… So I began these “conversations with God” which began with a request to know God beyond the scriptures and translations, dogmas and interpretations of other peoples. I wanted to know from direct experience… and so the conversations began… or rather, the insights began. Before they could happen, I had to first learn how God speaks…and how to listen. This started with dreams that developed into meditations and visions. I also found that my spirit loves songs and communicates messages to me through songs… It gave a whole new twist to the idea of an angel choir. I started waking up to music messages. Part of the music was popular music. Some I had never heard of in my life. That’s when I began to see that God was within me… Or at least there was a piece of God radiating within me…like…like the ocean is huge, if I take a glass of seawater and put it in a glass, it would be of the same quality, just not the same quality. So when I heard the concept of ori, the concept of the divine self in Ifa, I immediately knew what that was. I had long established a connection.
The difference between the brain, the personality and the ori
However, one of the things I had to learn was the difference between my personality and my divine self. Personality is all the different ways your unique self expresses itself in the world. It is shaped by culture, experiences, gender, race, religion, sometimes past lives, environment, even the constellations. Since the soul is a soul encased in matter, matter…your body is not separate from everything around it. It has a nature as it is connected to nature. All of these things shape personality… what you like or dislike, whether you’re more of a leader, or whether you like soccer or dancing. Personality makes you unique… Personality also has stages of development, because the most basic part of personality are your instincts. The instinctive self is found in what we know as the reptilian brain. It is located at the back of the head where the small groove is just above the middle of the neck. This is the earliest part of the human body to evolve and the oldest part of the brain. Sometimes it is referred to our animal nature because animals act on instincts. It allows us to be in touch with nature and also has a survival mechanism that keeps us safe… The part that says there’s a lion… RUN! It’s the part that’s starving and saying, “I have to eat!” It’s our survival mechanism, so it’s important in that way. Part of our development requires that we grow beyond our instinctive reactions and use our full intelligence to make conscious choices. In Ifa the occiput of the head is also associated with Esu, the divine messenger between heaven and earth. It is the connection between the head and the body. Esu presents us with choices and also transmits messages, just like the brain does. Our ability to decipher and differentiate these decisions and messages internally and externally allows us to grow. So Esu is not cheating on us… Esu is challenging our animal selves to function on a higher level by increasing our perception and consciousness. This is true character development.
Other parts of the brain give us a sense of rhythm, help us analyze things, and send and receive electrical messages between parts of the body. They say that we actually only use 5 or 10% of the brain, so there’s plenty of room for us to become the superhumans we’re meant to be. Then there’s the endocrine system, which also sends messages… only chemical ones. There we have the pineal gland which helps with visions, the pituitary gland which is the master gland and tells the other glands what and when to have things like menstruation and hair growth on the chest. Our hormones and emotions are tied to this system, so it affects our personality as well. So it is important to understand that while the personality is a complete machine and has a purpose, it is NOT your divine self. It is not your Ori when it is said that he seeks his guidance. The personality is knowledgeable based on their experiences and other factors…but not where your divine wisdom comes from. Your divine wisdom from your Ori is a spiritual ability, not a physical one. It is an extension of your soul/spirit body. Your Ori is that part of you that is still connected to the spiritual world you came from before entering this body to live here on earth. It’s not tied to likes or dislikes. It doesn’t matter what religion you practice. It’s about yours… it’s about spiritual development… the experience of living for yourself. This part contains the blueprint…the plans for your life experience. It’s the part that knew you’d have the kind of parents you had… and started that life-changing event as you grew up. It’s the part of you that you prayed to when you needed help…and it’s the part that answered your prayers many times…even when it said no.
It knows what it takes to get you through this life…successfully.
The multidimensional. Itself It can be confusing to understand that who you are is not one dimensional. You are not just your personality. That you are a multidimensional being, existing simultaneously between worlds… But if you think about your dream self, maybe it makes more sense. If you dream… who is the actor or you in the dream? Who do you experience… when you fight dragons in a dream? It is clearly not your awakened self. Still, it seems to have a mind of its own… in a world of its own. So it is also a part of your multidimensional self. That said, if you want to connect with your Ori and receive guidance, you need to be aware that it may not respond the way you envision it…or because you want it to, because while it is you…it is sooo much more than the little self imagine. One of my experiences with my Ori happened when I simply asked it to show me who it was. I’d heard all sorts of descriptions of Ori…but they were concepts…not real experiences. Having had experiences in the past, I wanted to further comprehend it… So I had a “dream”. I call it that, but I was actually lucid…and aware of the experience as it happened. I first saw a woman with a child on her lap. Next to her was a vertical tube with 3 lightbulbs on it. There was a swirling purple and white light that snaked or escalated through the tube to the top bulb where it burst into a huge glowing star. It was pure light… Brilliant, but it didn’t hurt my eyes… I knew right away that this was my Ori… I was totally immersed in it…. And then my personality started to kick in as I tried to flood it with questions about its nature and my origins. She…yes, she (had a female voice) interrupted me by saying she wasn’t used to speaking to me like that…with words…. Then the conversation became purely telepathic. I can only describe it as pure telepathy… or ideas… but no words… no formal language. She conveyed a question about how I felt my life was going? Even as I tried, I became aware that a purer part of me was responding… honestly… but not entirely under my conscious direction. I replied that I’m learning a lot and what I think I’m taking away from this life experience. It wasn’t at all what my personality would have said…I would have asked why I was being financially challenged? Or why patriarchy/racism is allowed to exist? Instead, my pure self was interested in my evolution…as a soul. Race and gender were just experiences… as was my financial status. These were social constructs, but not soul truths. They were purely dependent on physical body experience. They were the classroom set up to learn from experience.
I then also heard a man’s voice. More support from her than directly but clearly. He had a sense of humor, but I can’t remember exactly what he said. What stuck with me was the impression that now I know…. And I was sent back and I woke up in my body and was fully aware of the experience with my Ori. Much more came out of this experience and other Ori experiences, but that’s for another blog. What I wanted to reiterate is that the concept of Ori is very real…not just an idea. I can’t say that everyone has had the same experience as me. I can say that it is not a vain plight to seek full connection. It will not immediately make you a sage without problems. You still have that body and that personality in that environment. It’s something you have to deal with in this reality… and it’s still affecting you. But also realize…there is something more…much greater than just what you see on this plane of existence. So avoid getting too attached to your body.
