You’ll either end up with a HR consultation or, worse, your own advertising could be silently blocked.

The Company and your employer may collect data on a computer you own with a court order or workplace policy permitting the monitoring of an employee’s computer on Company premises. However, you are protected by law from unauthorized searches of personal property.
You see that your employer has a legal advantage over monitoring your computer. They can legally monitor you for the sake of their business secrecy and to maintain productivity.
In addition, if your employer gives you a computer for your business purpose, you can be sure that it has some kind of surveillance software installed on it. It is designed to ensure that you work as expected during working hours, and securely delete or modify the data if necessary.

You can now work from home as it is the only custom amid the pandemic. However, the rise of remote working has led companies to increase the use of monitoring software. Your employer uses it to evaluate your productivity.

Here are some ways your employer can monitor your device and its activities:
1. Device Management Software
The most common method for employers to track employee activity on a computer is through the use of device management software.
Device management software is typically installed on an employer-supplied device. If you’re using an employer’s device, look for installed software with your company’s name on it.
If so, rest assured that your company is watching you. This software is for security purposes. For example, if the device is stolen, your employer can erase the data on the device.
But sometimes the software gets polished with a feature to track your activities on it.

2. Employee tracking and management software
Just like device management software, rest assured that a piece of software called employee tracking or management by human resources can track your activities on the PC.
For example, if you have software like VeriClock and HubStars installed on your PC, your employer can track your activity on your computer.
3. Online business communication platform
Business communication platforms like Microsoft Teams can track your activities within the app.
If you use a work account to use Microsoft Teams, your company can track your activities in Teams. Additionally, they can intercept your calls, meetings, and video chats in Teams. Workplace accounts allow IT admins to enable commands to intercept your activities in Microsoft Teams.
4. Project and task management software
If your employer’s laptop has project and task management software installed, it’s safe to assume that your employer is tracking your movements on that device.
For example, Controlio, Teramind, and DeskTime are some software programs that employers use to monitor projects and tasks and help them monitor your activities on your official device.
5. Productivity Monitoring Software
Finally, if your laptop has software like Veriato Cerebral, Activ Trak, Interguard, and Stuff-Cop installed, your employer can use it to track your activity.

How to make sure your employer monitors your computer
Knowing what software your employer can now use to track your activity, what if you don’t have any of them installed on your work laptop but you still feel like you’re being watched?
Well, that’s what I’m going to cover in this section.
If you can’t find any of the above software, your employer made it secretly so you can’t find it easily. But you’re in luck; I have prepared some methods for you to make sure if you are being tracked. Follow them to find out the answer.

Here are the methods to determine if your employer is monitoring your computer:
1. Look for suspicious apps in Application Manager
If you want to find the software that tracks your activities on behalf of your employer, you must first check the list of your installed applications. If you see an unknown app, we’ll look for it.
Follow these steps to check your installed applications list on Windows 10:
Press Win + R keys to open Run command box.
Type control in the box and press Enter.
Click Programs and Features.
You will see a list of your installed app. Find the one that seems unfamiliar or suspicious to you. Google the app and see if it is a monitoring app.
2. Look for suspicious background processes
If the monitoring app is embedded in your device’s system file, you will not find it in your device’s application list. You need to keep digging and looking for suspicious background processes.
Follow these steps to open the background processes list on Windows:
Right-click on the taskbar.
Click Task Manager.
Scroll down and look for suspicious processes.
If you see processes other than your apps and Windows system, search for them on Google to learn more about them.

3. Check data usage for suspicious activity
If you have a suspicious monitoring app installed on your device, it needs to connect to the internet in order to forward the data about your activities to your employer.
So, checking your device’s data usage is an efficient way to find out.
Follow the steps below to open the data usage settings on your PC and find out the app:
Press Win + I keys to go to Settings.
Click Network & Internet .
Click Data Usage to view total data usage for the last 30 days.
Click the Usage Details option to view network data usage for installed applications.
If you see an unknown or suspicious app in the list, you can assume that it is the scammer who is providing data about your device activities to your employer.
4. Look for suspicious programs
If you know what you are looking for, you will find it faster. So if you want to find a monitoring software that is deeply embedded in your system files and cannot be detected with a mere list check, we need to search more diligently.
We must look for an app that is not categorized as a surveillance application and distinguishable from them.
The most common tracking softwares are VNC, RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, LogMeIn and GoToMyPC. These programs allow employers to see the desktop, run applications, change settings, and access employee data as if they were sitting in front of their devices.
This software is not usually referred to as spyware, but as tools for IT administrators to manage large numbers of computers.
Follow the first two methods to verify their presence on your device. If you can’t find anything, look for it in your C: drive.
Follow these steps to check for suspicious app folders on Windows:
Press Win + R to open the Run command box.
Type C:\Programs in the box and press Enter.
Look for folders with the name of the above software.
Repeat the steps for the C:\Program Files (x86) folder.

5. Check the firewall settings
Suppose you’ve already tried the previous methods and found nothing, but you’re still pretty suspicious that someone is monitoring you. In this case, you need to check the computer’s ports through your PC’s firewall settings.
Don’t worry if you don’t know the process. It’s pretty easy. Ports are virtual data connections that computers use to exchange information. If you have spy software installed on your system, a port should be open to allow data transfer.
Press Win + R keys to open Run command box.
Type control in the box and press Enter.
Click Windows Firewall.
On the left side of the box, click Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall.
Go through the list and see if there is a program called VNC , Remote Control or something else suspicious.

What to do if your employer is monitoring your device
Now I will show you what to do if you have monitoring software installed on your device. Because any change will set off an alert with your employer or your office’s IT admins, you can’t delete it or disrupt network access.
At worst, removing the monitoring software can cost you your job.
So you will not do anything with the software as its sole purpose is to track your activities during working hours to see if you are productive.
But now that you’ve spotted the mole, I’ll show you some customs that you must follow to avoid any awkwardness with your employer regarding the spying app. I list them below.

So, never search for new Netflix movies or other personal activities on your official device.
3. Do not bring official devices to in-person meetings
Laptops these days have GPS and they are pretty accurate. If you don’t want your employer to know about your little trip to the restaurant during office hours, don’t bring them with you.
Your employer can easily track your locations through the tracking software installed on your official device. It doesn’t matter if it’s not connected to Wi-Fi. It saves the location in another way and forwards it to your employer.
4. Don’t store your passwords on official devices
Hopefully you understand this point after reading the previous actions if you have any monitoring app installed on your office computer.
Since your employer can access everything on your official device, storing your passwords on it is foolish. They can be easily compromised. So never store your passwords on your official device. Also, never use them for social media use.
5. Do not connect personal devices to the office network
Network monitoring software is installed on most official networks.
For example, SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor, Datadog Network Performance Monitor, ManageEngine OpManager, etc. Employers use these tools to monitor the network activities of the devices connected to the office network.
You can recognize which website you are visiting on your device. So beware of browsing Instagram on your device while connected to the office network.
6. Do not look for jobs on official devices or networks
Finally, never look for job offers on your official devices or while connected to an office network, unless you are trying to characterize yourself as a traitor.
