Try different media
Pencil drawings are just the tip of the iceberg. Try charcoal, pastels, pencils, markers, crayons and Conte crayons. Experiment and mix media to find what brings out your best drawings.
Draw daily and at the right time
Don’t just wait until Inktober to get started. Find the time of day when you have the most creative energy and don’t waver from it. After the first week it will become routine.
Commit to a drawing series online
Tumblr and Instagram, among other platforms, offer daily drawing challenges (think Inktober, but year-round). Joining one of these and posting your drawings will increase your accountability and motivation. Not only do set themes give you direction and just the right amount of constraints to work within, you’ll also join a creative community that shares feedback.

Wavy Christmas Lights
Step 1: Draw a tangled line
To draw these wavy lights you first need to draw a tangled line like this one. Make them as big or small as you like.
Step 2: Draw the lightbulbs
Once you’ve drawn a wavy, confused line, now it’s time to draw the lightbulbs.
You need to draw to small lines first and draw a larger circle shape. Now make sure you come full circle. Keep drawing the lightbulbs wherever you think they look best until you reach the end of the line.
You can also go ahead and draw them on the tangled lines to make this drawing look better.
Step 3: Add details
Now that you’ve drawn all of the lightbulbs, it’s time to make them glow. All you have to do is draw at least three petals around the bulbs.
This way it looks like the lights are on and glowing brightly. However, you only have to add this detail if you want to.
These Christmas lights look great even without those extra details.
Step 4: Color the drawing
Here comes the fun part – it’s time to color the drawing. I used a brush pen to color in these Christmas lights, but you can use a crayon or colored pencil, or even color them in.
Use bright colors like red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and pink when coloring them.
You can also just use two colors like yellow and green, but I found that if you dye them different colors, they look a lot happier.

Christmas lights garland
Step 1: Draw three curves
To draw this simple garland you need to draw and connect three curves. Then you want to draw small squares on either side of the curves.
Step 2: Add the lightbulbs
Now that you’ve drawn the basic shapes, it’s time to draw the spheres. You can do this by drawing a kind of petal shape. Make sure the top of the globe is slightly pointed.

Step 3: Complete the lightbulbs
Complete the drawing of the lightbulbs until you reach the end. Another great idea to try is to draw smaller lightbulbs in between the ones you draw if you want the drawing to be more detailed.
Step 4: Add smaller ovals
When you’ve drawn all of the lightbulbs, add this tiny feature to them by drawing little ovals inside the lightbulbs.
Step 5: Color
Color in your Christmas light drawing using yellow, blue, red, orange and green tones. And you’re done!
fairy lights
Step 1: Draw the lines
Drawing this Christmas fairy lights is actually pretty easy! Start by drawing a slightly curved line at an angle. Then, on the other side, draw parallel lines going down.
Next, draw small black squares on each of the lines, making sure you leave quite a bit of space between them.
Step 2: Attach the lightbulbs
Next you need to draw the light bulbs. You can do this by drawing a small circle around the small black squares you drew earlier. Go down each line by finishing the balls for each of the black squares.
Step 3: Color the bulbs
I always find coloring the most valuable part of a drawing. They can bring your design and creation to life, so to speak. It definitely makes a simple drawing stand out when you color it in with bright and bold colors like this drawing, don’t you agree?

Christmas lights are often used to decorate Christmas trees, as well as the exteriors of houses, shrubs and trees outdoors. Where did the tradition of illuminating houses and trees with tiny lights come from?
The Christmas tree was popularized by European royalty in the early 19th century. Before the invention of the electric lightbulb, small candles were used on Christmas trees – such candles are still preferred in some regions.
This illumination is intended to symbolize Christ as “the light of the world”. However, this custom was observed much earlier in religious celebrations across Europe.

Evergreens were used to decorate the home as these seemed to have an almost supernatural ability to thrive during the cold, dark winter.
Candles and fires were lit in hopes of reviving the “dying” sun. These two ancient customs have been combined in the modern Christmas tree.
By the early 20th century, strings of electric lights had become common Christmas tree decorations, and these began migrating to front yards across America in the 1950s and 1960s.
The houses were decorated to resemble decorated gingerbread houses. The custom soon spread to other countries. Depending on the location, these may be referred to as string lights, fairy lights, Christmas lights, Italian lights, or mini lights.

Easy Drawing Christmas Lights – Step 2 2. Enclose small shapes, each like a rounded rectangle, on top of the top wire. Then use a curved line to enclose a teardrop shape above each rectangle. These form the first of the bulbs. Include a small oval in each bulb to represent the luster of the glass.
Easy Drawing Christmas Lights – Step 3 3. Enclose small rectangular shapes along the bottom of the top wire. Then place an inverted teardrop shape underneath each one. Finally, enclose a small oval in each onion.
Easy Christmas Lights Drawing – Step 4 4. Draw many short lines descending from the second wire. Enclose a small circle below each, followed by a much larger circle. Texture each ornament with small dots.
Easy Drawing Christmas Lights – Step 5 5. Draw a long, curving, rippling line, doubling again and crossing many times. This will form another string of lights, one not yet suspended.
Easy Christmas Lights Drawing – Step 6 6. Enclose small rounded rectangular shapes along the strand. Depending on their position, they enclose a pointed oval structure at the top or bottom, which forms the small tubers.
Easy Drawing Christmas Lights – Step 7 7. Continue drawing lightbulbs along the strand, first enclosing a small rounded rectangular shape, then a pointed oval. Don’t forget to draw a small oval in each onion to indicate their shine.
Adding More Detail to Your Christmas Lights Image – Step 8 8. Continue drawing more lightbulbs along the strand, first with a rounded rectangle, then a pointed oval, and finally a small oval inside.
Complete the Outline of Your Christmas Lights Drawing – Step 9 9. Complete your Christmas lights by drawing lightbulbs to the end of the strand.
Color in your Christmas lights Color in your Christmas lights. Many Christmas lights used to be either white or red and green. Today, blue is a popular color. Fairy lights also come in colors that match other holidays—for example, orange or purple for Halloween; Red, White, and Blue for Independence Day; green for St. Patrick’s Day; and green and purple for Mardi Gras.
