Shell Drawing: Getting Started
Hello again. If you are reading this article, you may have seen some of my other tutorials as well. I’m having a blast making these and I really hope they help some people out there. In this article, I will provide step-by-step instructions on how to draw a seashell. This shell also has a large and beautiful pearl in the center.
I’ve tried to make this as simple as possible and I hope I’ve succeeded here. This is a bit more complicated than some of my previous tutorials so it may take a little longer to draw this. There are more steps than usual, but drawing shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes max.
Step 1. Draw the top of the clam shell.

This shell will open if you haven’t noticed in the colored image above. Draw the top of the conch shell as if it were open. The opening of the shell very beautiful; It has many curves and a unique design.

Next, draw the rest of the first half of the shell. So that I can later draw a shell in the middle, notice that I didn’t draw the entire bottom of the shell.

With both shell parts drawn, it’s time to add some of the interior details of the shells. When the shells close, it’s almost like a mouth opening and closing. Imagine the inside of the shell as if it were the palate of a human or animal. Well, this is obviously nothing like a person’s mouth, but the concept is somewhat similar.

Next, draw some lines at the mouth of the shells. This would also be considered an additional detail.
Step 7. Draw a base for the bottom shell.

For some reason, an opened seashell reminds me of a jewelry box or a music box to me. Notice in this step that I’ve drawn a “base” of sorts for the bottom shell.
Step 8. Draw the pearl.

We are nearly there! Now it’s time to draw in the actual bead. Remember when I mentioned that where the shells meet (in the middle) shouldn’t be fully drawn? Now we see why that is. I left room for the bead to be pulled into the center of the shell. Draw the spherical object at the location of the sample drawing.

In this final step, we’ll just focus on the details. If you look at the picture above you can see all the extra lines I’ve included around the openings of each shell. After that last step, that’s pretty much it! Thank you for reading this tutorial and I hope you try it yourself at least once.

How to Draw a Seashell – Step by Step Guide
A visit to the sea would not be complete without taking home some of the beautiful seashells that dot the shore.
Shells are a hard, protective outer layer created by animals that live in the sea. Typically, the shells used to be part of the bodies of sea creatures.
The shell has clear intricate patterns on its surface and dazzling colors, so we think drawing a shell would be fun and exciting!
We have created a step by step guide on how to draw a seashell simplified with 9 easy instructions and simple illustrations.

How to Draw a Shell – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
Drawing a seashell is really easy! Begin by drawing an inverted, vertical teardrop shape. This creates the center of the shell.
Remember that the pointed end of the figure should be at the bottom while the rounded edge should be at the top.
Step 2 – Draw the middle part of the shell
From this point everything is simple and it’s all about repetition, with slight changes in terms of size and angle of course.
Draw the second inverted water drop shape of the shell.
Make it a little smaller than the first one, draw it on the left side and make it appear behind the first one just as shown in the picture.
Step 3 – Draw another layer on the right side
Similar to the previous step, let’s draw another waterdrop figure. To make your drawing symmetrical, make sure to add this layer on the right side this time.
As you can see in the image above, the shell’s layers are gradually fanning out.
Step 4 – Next, draw the fourth layer of the shell
In this step, we’ll simply repeat the same process and draw another inverted teardrop shape on the far left.
Again, it should appear behind the previous one.
Step 5 – Then draw the fifth layer of the shell
Repeat the previous step on the opposite side.
At this point you should now have five layers of shell making up the clam.
Step 6 – Draw the leftmost layer of the shell
Here we draw another section of the shell.
Remember that this layer is on the far left and should be slightly smaller compared to the other layers of the shell.
Your shell drawing is almost complete – keep going!
Step 7 – Draw the right plane of the shell
This is another iteration. This makes it look symmetrical by adding another smaller waterdrop-like shape on the right side.
After completing this step, all seven layers (one in the center and three on each side) of the shell should be complete.
Step 8 – Draw the lower left part of the shell
In this step we will create the hinge at the bottom of the shell.
Simply draw a horizontal curved line that connects directly to the left side of the shell’s pointed underside.
Step 9 – Now finish the structure of the shell
Repeat the previous step on the opposite side to complete the shell’s hinges. This is the part that supports the clam when opening or closing.
Try to make this figure identical to the first one we drew in the previous one. This will help keep the shell symmetrical.
Now it’s finally time to make your shell look a lot more realistic by adding colors! This is most likely the most awaited step because it’s the place to show off your artistic skills!
As you can see in the image above, we used a mix of the tan and cream colors. You can color your shell similar to ours or customize the colors. Either way, we’re sure the colors will turn out perfect!

5 tips to make your seashell drawing even better!
You have a wonderful seashell drawing, but we’re going to show you how to make it even more stunning! Seashells are really beautiful to look at and they come in many different colors and textures.
We left the surface of this shell drawing pretty smooth and blank, but feel free to add some texture detail with some simple lines.
There are so many textures you could add to this one and it will make such a big difference!
We mentioned that seashells can come in many different shapes and sizes, and now that you’ve completed these, you can try designing a few more around them.
If you have some shells that you could use to help you then these would be the perfect models! Otherwise, you could look up some images of different bowls online to help you design those extra bowls.
You could add this shell to a collection of different shells, but there are other background settings that you could depict.
For example, this shell could be lying on a sandy beach surrounded by small crabs, seaweed and sea waves.
These are a few beachy elements you could add to this seashell drawing, but what others can you think of?
Another way to make this shell sketch even better would be to add some pretty colors. We’ve kept the colors muted for this example, but feel free to make it as colorful as you like!
Choosing colors is only part of the fun, though. You can also experiment with different art tools and mediums to achieve the colors you want for this beautiful drawing.
Finally, you could make this drawing even better by changing, adding, or removing certain details. You could change the shape of the shell a bit or add some nicks and cracks.
Another idea would be to have some small pieces of seaweed or other sea objects on it to make it look more weathered. What other little details could you do?
