How to Dye Lace Closure and Not Your Lace (Video Tutorial)
Hello, my dears! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to easily dye your lace closure without getting dye on the lace. This method takes about 1.5 hours. Watch the video or follow the steps and images below.
What you will need:
Gloves Hair clips Conditioner Hair coloring sticks Coloring brushes
Step 1: Pin Down Closure
Get your cork mannequin and tie a plastic bag around it so the paint you apply later doesn’t seep in. Take a pin and attach it to the mannequin.
Step 2: Add conditioner
Take your brush and squeeze a generous amount of conditioner onto the brush. Start at the top and apply conditioner to the entire tip. Try not to get conditioner on your hair.
Step 3: Coloring
Turn the clasp inside out and pin it back in place so it doesn’t move while dyeing. Put on your glove and start parting your hair and hold it in place with your clips. Place the color in the brush and at the bottom of the clasp, start sweeping the color onto the hair from root to tip. Be especially careful not to get too much paint on the tip. Even if you do, it will flush out, but this will help make the job easier.
Step 4: Comb
After applying the color, take a comb and comb the color through so the color coats each strand.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4
Continue coloring and comb the color all over the clasp to the front.

TRANSCRIPT Hey everyone, this is Breanna Rutter, author of over 14 hair care books and founder of howtoblackhair.com. In this tutorial I will teach you how to dye a lace closure. This lace closure is a Mrs. Rutter’s Virgin Extensions lace closure from MrsRutters.com. The materials you will need to dye your lace closure is a box of permanent hair dye. You will also need a tint brush, a bowl to store your hair color, hair clippers, 4 duckbill clips, a rat tail comb, a clean mascara wand, a pair of gloves and a trash bag. Once you have all the materials ready, I will walk you through dyeing a lace closure step by step. So now we are here with our prepared station. You should make sure you take your trash bag and drape it over the table or the area you will be working on so you don’t mess up your table or the surrounding floor. After that, you should make sure to prepare your hair dye so that you are ready to dye your cap and have all the materials handy. The clips will help you keep the hair separated while you work on dying the roots, and you’ll also want to make sure you have scissors nearby in case you need help developing your dye, as you’ll all have packets were able to cut them open. First of all I want to describe and tell you how important it is to make sure that you die this degree very, very carefully. Now when you dye a lace closure it is very important not to drip hair dye onto the lace for a number of reasons. One is because it actually stains the tip and when you’re ready to put the tip on it looks like you have a black scalp as opposed to a tan or tan looking scalp. So you just want to wipe off any excess color in your bowl and then start coloring the roots of your hair. Now I suggest you start about an eighth of an inch from the top and then work up a little closer when you’re comfortable, but the goal is to get as close to your roots as possible. As you can see there is a thin line of hair on the side where you want to make your parting thin enough this way you can saturate the hair without touching your top. So keep one of your hands that you should use with your less dominant hand to hold your lace closure and then you can use your dominant hand guiding you with your clean mascara wand to actually color your hair. So just use your dominant hand to slide the hair over it and then lightly brush the roots of the hair without touching the closure. so a bit of capped spacing is perfectly fine, if it helps you get closer to the roots you can also roll the mascara wand and then roll it back so your mascara wand is right on top of the hair root and then roll one way and then roll it back to lift it out again. If you drag a bit of hair with you now, that’s totally fine because you’re going to have to color all your hair anyway. But your main focus is to only focus on the roots of your hair and then roll your mascara wand back out so that that way you’re coloring the roots and not the ends. If you feel like you didn’t get close enough, that’s perfectly fine. It’s far better to go back in and get closer to dying the roots of your hair rather than getting too close and actually ruining your top, and remember if you do get any don’t dye your top at all. It is important that you start washing immediately. Apply shampoo to the area, rub with your fingers, and then rinse out the resulting stain. So when you are happy with the job you have done coloring the roots of your small section, part a new section of hair, keep the hair clipped and start doing the same. You want to color the inside of all of your parts without touching the top. When you are done coloring the roots of all the hair it is best to color the rest with your brush because now you don’t have to worry about the fact of the top anymore, all you have to do is, dye the rest of the hair hair. So after you’ve dyed the roots of your closure, you’ll find that the roots are naturally quite distinct from the rest of the hair, and to make sure you’re not soiling your tip closure or dripping dye, you’ll want to check the tip occasionally , while applying it with the mascara wand. So after you’ve attached each section individually, you’ll want to make sure you turn your tip over and see if you see any smudges. Well if you maybe get a few specks on the edge or maybe a few specks at the top through the lace that’s fine as long as it doesn’t get pushed into the lace and also if there is a lace that is trimmed and you might have those get new small stains on it, it’s perfectly fine. You just want to make sure that when you look at the lace, the section showing your part doesn’t have any color in that area. Now that we’ve colored all of the roots of the hair, start a section by working from the back strands of hair to the front strands of hair and then start coloring the rest of the hair with the brush. Now that you’re adding hair dye to your hair you want to make sure you don’t do this at the root, it’s unnecessary. You’ve already covered the root, and the point of doing that first is that you don’t accidentally get paint on the root of the actual fastener. So just start with the back section of some hair and start coloring the rest of the hair until you have covered all your hair. Always make sure to start at the ends and then work your way up to the roots. Also when you section the hair it doesn’t have to be neat, you just want to grab a very thin section so that when you apply the color you can actually fully saturate the hair. To ensure you are fully colored, a good tip is to open up your hair with your brush and then apply more hair color. After you have colored all of your hair, you should make sure that you let the hair process for the length of time that the package instructions state. This is usually between half an hour and an hour after processing your hair. When you actually wash your hair it is very important that the color does not come into contact with the tip. So when you rinse all of the color out of your hair, you want the water to run through the tip and then down the hair. This will prevent dyes from actually coming into contact with the lace. In fact, if you don’t submerge your lace tie in water, some of the dye will seep through the lace and stain the lace. So when you rinse, water needs to flow to the tip and down the hair shaft so the color doesn’t actually touch the tip. After rinsing the color out until clear or almost clear, continue shampooing and rinsing hair as usual, then allow to air dry to complete the look. As you can see, this is the end result of the fastener after it has been shampooed and air dried. As you can see the hair has turned out nice and even and check out the lace closure too! There aren’t any patches of black color on the cap, that’s why using my mascara wand technique is so important because you literally just part your hair wherever you want and then apply a little bit of color to your mascara that you want to color the Roots right where you like it. Once again it is very important that you do not leave stains in the lace as you will part and wear this lace for your desired style. You want to make sure this looks like your real scalp! They allow us to go from straight to wavy and back to natural without damaging our strands. And they protect our precious edges, allowing our hair to take a break from tension-laden styling. But let’s be honest: high quality fasteners and fronts don’t come cheap. When they rip, tear, or go bald, it’s a devastating feeling that hurts our pockets as much as it hurts our hearts. But fear not, there are many ways to bring them back to life! Whatever your clasp issues, we have the tips you need to revitalize and repair a lace clasp.

Thinning and balding tip

Maybe you accidentally pulled your hair slowly while styling it. Or you’ve only had the closure for a while and, like a man in his late 60s, he loses more and more hair as he ages. The trick is to create an illusion. Using a concealer that matches your scalp and a brown or black kohl pencil, fill in the gaps until you achieve the look you want. This tutorial will show you exactly how to do it:
Orange knots
Does your shutter look orange? Breath deep! That means you haven’t bleached your knots long enough to achieve a blonde hue, and fixing it is nothing short of a G-thang. First, shampoo your closure or forehead with a shampoo designed for blonde and silver hair. We recommend this one. This will help remove the brassy color of the orange and bring the knots back to a cooler tone. Bleach isn’t something to play with, so it would most likely destroy your knots if you reapplied it right away. Take a few days, drink water, bathe in coconut oil, glow, then come back and reapply the bleach. Leave it on for about 25 minutes at the beginning. When the time is up, rinse the bleach off a small section and check the tone. If the color is sufficient, go ahead and rinse off all of the bleach. If it’s still a bit orange, leave it on for another 20 minutes and check again.
About bleached knots
If you’ve bleached your knots to the point where the roots of your bangs or your forehead look blonde, don’t worry, this is another quick and easy fix. One of our favorite web gurus on YouTube, IvyDear, created a short tutorial on how to easily fix this error. Simply take black hair dye and use a mascara wand to gently sweep the dye over the roots of your closure. Watch Ivy’s video below for a visual tutorial:
Dyed tip
You successfully bleached your cap, but when you started dying the rest of the hair the color you wanted, you accidentally got some dye on the tip. What now? You have two options (well, three if you decide to buy a new cap): First, you can try to bleach the hair color by re-bleaching the knots on your cap. Depending on what type of dye you used (semi, demi, permanent) this may or may not work. Your next option is to remove the dye from the lace fabric with a fabric dye remover. Follow the directions carefully and you should be able to completely remove the paint from your tip.
