genesis

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, is one of the most famous. It describes how God created heaven, earth and human beings. Almost every Christian can quote at least one line from Genesis, but very many have never actually read the book. Genesis describes the creation and history of Adam and Eve (chapters 1–3). It contains the well-known description of the Fall, or Eve eating an apple from the forbidden tree of wisdom, and the story of Noah and the Ark (chapters 6–8). Genesis also contains God’s promises to Abraham (chapters 12, 15, and 17) and to Joseph, his cloak, and his dreams (37–50).

The gospels of Matthew and Luke are based on the gospel of Mark, all three together being easy to understand. However, the Gospel of John is a departure. The Gospel of John places Jesus primarily in Jerusalem ministry, not in Galilee.

The gospels are great books to read from beginning to end and give a sense that Jesus is alive in everything we do and not just a historical figure. The gospels help readers discover Jesus, learn about his miracles, and see how he lived his life. The book of Acts begins in Jerusalem and moves back and forth between there and Antioch and from Europe to Asia. The book ends with Paul in Rome. How to Build a Relationship with God

How great it is to know that you have God’s favor in your life. When you experience His bounty of blessings, you cannot afford to be ungrateful.

So how will you know if God is truly blessing you? How can you judge his loyalty over the years?

Signs that your blessings are coming

You can check out the following signs of God’s goodness and beautiful blessings in your life.

1. Your prayers will be answered.

Do you pray every day? If so, how often do you get dizzy when you realize your prayers have been answered? Answered prayers are certainly a sign that one is blessed. God listens to the prayers of his beloved children. But of course these prayers should be according to his will.

Praying according to God’s will means that you must ask for those who are not against His Word. Also, your motives must be pure and God-glorifying. I doubt God will hear your prayer to harm the people you have offended. But on the other hand, He will be pleased if you pray for those who persecute you instead.

2. You and your loved ones are healthy.

If you and everyone in your family are currently enjoying wellness, you are undoubtedly blessed. But unfortunately, the ongoing global health crisis has affected many people and many have lost loved ones as a result. That is why you should be so thankful to the Lord if you are all in good health today. It is one of the greatest blessings one could ever earnestly pray for.

3. You have a grateful heart.

Is it your habit to thank others for small things? Do you remember to thank God regularly for your life and daily blessings? Being a grateful person reflects a blessed life. It shows that you have so much to be grateful for every day – and you are aware of this favor. Therefore, a grateful heart is a sign that one is continually blessed.

But only as a reminder. You don’t have to be rich or famous or get anything you want to be thankful to the Lord. What makes a person grateful is a feeling of contentment.

4. Your needs are well taken care of.

If you and your family are allowed to eat at least three times a day, every day, you are blessed. Do you also have a house in which you feel safe, secure and comfortable? If so, then you are truly blessed. Even if you don’t have a large fortune but your needs are always met, it means that God does indeed care about you.

5. You get overflowing resources.

How much more when you are continually receiving more blessings than you need? Having resources in excess of your needs is a sign of blessing. Examples of overflowing blessings include being able to snack between meals and having extra money over and above your regular expenses.

6. You have the heart and the means to give to those in need.

In connection with number 5, you would know that you are blessed if you want to help others. If you can give to the poor without hesitation, it means you understand that your provision is from the Lord, so you don’t have to worry that you are lacking. You know you will lack for nothing because you have faith that God always provides for you. Also, giving becomes one of your ways to thank God for His goodness.

7. You are successful in everything you do.

If everything you do seems to be getting excellent, it means that God is blessing the works of your hands. Whether it’s at school, work, home, or in the community, others can see that everything you do is successful. If this is you, then you are truly blessed!

8. You receive favor wherever you go.

Being favored is another sign of being blessed of God. The first and foremost favor you have received from Him is the gift of eternal life through faith in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 says: “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Another example of being favored is when others support your plans or needs. For example, if you had to go home in freezing weather, you would get a free ride. Or you could have received a scholarship to college or been nominated for a professional promotion.

9. You are surrounded by people who guide you.

You are certainly blessed when God has surrounded you with loved ones to care for and guide you. They are your human guardian angels sent by the Lord to help you whenever you need it. God also uses them to correct you when you’ve made a mistake or to give you wise counsel whenever you have to make difficult decisions.

10. You have peace of mind.

One of the best blessings you can receive from God is peace of mind. Many people may have lots of money and other material things, but conflict, guilt, and frustration can also bombard them. Most of these people become so exhausted thinking about their life problems that they can hardly sleep.

So thank God if you can still sleep soundly at night and wake up refreshed and optimistic in the morning. Having a clear conscience and being at peace with those around you is a special blessing for which you should thank God.

11. Your life testimony encourages others.

God’s grace is one of the finest blessings that you must handle with the utmost care. His grace is why you can receive His mercy, forgiveness, and second chances. You may have screwed up a lot, but when you give your life to Christ, you will be covered by God’s grace.

One of the manifestations of grace in your life is your transformed life. For example, if you used to live a broken life, but are now healed and whole because of God’s love, your life glorifies Him. Or, if people used to know you as a troublemaker but now find you changed, your testimony will also bring glory to God.

12. You will witness his miracles.

Have you ever witnessed God’s miracles? Is it the sudden healing of a chronic illness? Or did someone just knock on your door to bring food when your family had nothing to eat? If you are a first-hand witness that God is a miracle worker, then you are truly blessed. He loves you so much that He even makes room for you when there seems to be no way.

Your life itself is a blessing

If you make a habit of counting all the good things you have in life, there is no way you can miss the truth that you are blessed. Just think of the air you breathe, the clean water you drink or the clothes that cover your body. These are small but precious blessings to be grateful for.

Also, the fact that you are alive today is proof that God is blessing you. He still has a purpose and a plan for your life. Most importantly, he loves you as his child. Therefore, do not waste your life. Instead, learn to appreciate it and live in a way that celebrates God’s goodness.

Getting closer to God is a phrase I hear a lot. As a believer, one may feel that one is no longer as close to God as one was before.

James 4:8-10, NKJV, says, “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Clean your hands, you sinner; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter turn to sorrow and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

This Bible verse tells us that as we draw near to God, he will draw near to us. The catch is that we cannot walk in sin and be close to God. He wants us to be pure in heart and mind and to be humble.

If you feel you are not close to God right now, you are not alone. I also experience this feeling. The good news is that the Bible tells us how to draw closer to God. Today I will show you how to get closer to God.

What does it mean to draw near to God?

Getting closer to God means you want to be in a close relationship with God. Jesus is the only way to the Father (John 14:6). It is the only way to draw near to God. God sent Jesus to be the mediator between God and man.

Choosing to make Jesus your personal Lord and Savior means you are committing your life to Him. We must have faith and know that we can draw closer to God through Jesus.

How to approach God

There are certain ways to get closer to God. I felt far from God several times during my walk, so I will share what helped me to get close to Him.

1. Receiving Jesus

Accepting Jesus into your life is the first step in drawing closer to the Lord. Without Jesus there is no access to God. The Bible tells us that God sent his only son to prepare a way for us.

“Jesus replied, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 NIV

This verse means that one has to go through Jesus to get to God. If you want to receive the salvation that is available through Jesus Christ, put your faith in Him (Acts 16:31), repent of your sins, and trust fully in His death as a sacrifice for your sins. He promises to send His Holy Spirit to those who receive Him.

Works will not save you (Eph. 2:8-9). Baptism is an important step in identifying with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. It shows dying and being buried with Christ. No baptism is required for salvation. The only thing required for salvation is faith in Jesus Christ.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved” Acts 16:31 ESV

Once you accept Jesus, you have access to draw closer to God. His Holy Spirit will lead you into God’s truth and convict you of your sin. When you repent of your sins, you can walk and grow with Jesus.

2. Study the Bible

Studying the Bible is essential if you want to draw closer to God. It is impossible to know our Creator if we do not know about Him.

2 Timothy 3:16, ESV, says, “All Scripture is breathed out of God, and useful for teaching, for correction, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

The Bible contains everything we need to know to navigate through life. I encourage you to get a good study Bible so you can study the Scriptures. There are Bible apps and free online Bible studies that can help you expand your knowledge. If you want to study a specific topic, you can benefit from a reading plan.

Make studying the Bible a priority and you will draw closer to the Lord.

3. Pray

Prayer is the way we communicate with God. Praying through Jesus will put you in communication with God. You can pray all day and ask as many questions as you like.

“Therefore I tell you what you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 NIV

Prayer does not have to be performed in any particular way. I try to set aside a specific time for prayer in a quiet environment because I want to hear from God. When there’s too much going on, I get distracted easily.

I also pray while doing the dishes, folding laundry, making dinner, etc. There is no right way to pray. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking you need to pray a certain way.

God is omnipresent. He is with you all the time and is available whenever you call him. Include Him in your life and you will grow in a closer relationship.

4. Worship and praise him

We are privileged to praise and worship God. God is our Creator and everything we have comes from Him. Acknowledging that a relationship with Jesus is personal allows us to see how powerful our God is.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell in it.” Psalm 24:1, NKJV

We should worship and praise God all the time. He is always good (Psalm 100:5) and worthy of our praise. One of my favorite ways of worshiping and praising him is through music.

Music just touches my soul and gets me deep in worship. I even find myself memorizing scriptures while listening to music.

Music will bring you closer to God. He created music and loves to hear its joyful sound (Psalm 98:4-6).

5. Trust him

When I decided to accept Jesus into my life, I found it difficult to trust Him. Only when I got closer to God could I rest in Him.

The Bible teaches that we must trust the Lord with all our hearts. If we really believe that he loves us and will do everything for our good, we will be able to trust him.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; submit to him in all your ways,

and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

You must examine your heart and ask God to reveal the truth about who you trust. I did this and found myself trusting myself.

Trusting yourself or anyone other than Jesus is a problem. The Lord is the only one who can make your paths straight. Your own flesh will make you stumble.

Learn to trust the Lord and know that you don’t have to understand everything. When you are close to God, you will trust that His understanding is sufficient. He works everything for our good (Romans 8:28) and knows what is best for us.

6. Have faith

To have faith we must know who God says we are. The Bible tells us that we have a goal (Jeremiah 29:11). He has plans for us and we have to trust that his plans are for the best of us.

If we don’t have faith, we risk falling into fear. Choosing faith over fear requires daily discipline. We must choose faith or we will walk down a dark empty road.

Faith brings you close to God because you believe what He says. Choosing to make him master of your life means you must bend your will to his. In my life he has proven again and again that his ways are better than mine. He always cares.

7. Get involved

As I made the decision to accept Christ, I felt the Holy Spirit telling me to get involved. I took the first step by attending a Bible study at my church.

I was so blessed by the ladies. It was my very first Bible study for women by Beth Moore. My growth in Christ grew through the fellowship of other women.

There are so many ways to get involved outside of Bible study groups. There are many ways to bless people and show them the love of Christ.

Personally, I like Bible study groups, but I know they’re not for everyone. Pray about how you can get involved. The Lord may urge you to start a Christian blog, a Christian podcast, or even a Christian YouTube channel. These are all great ways to share what God has done in your life.

Getting involved will help you draw closer to God by being a living testimony of His faithfulness.

What happens when you read the Bible everyday?

Reading the Bible on a regular and consistent basis has several benefits. First, the Bible shows us God’s character and provides us God’s revelation of himself to his people. In each section of the Bible, we see God’s holy, unchanging, faithful, gracious and loving character.

How to Build a Relationship with God

why are you reading the bible Or maybe I should ask the question, why don’t you read the Bible? As someone who teaches the Bible in both college and church contexts, it is clear that many Christians do not take their Bible reading seriously. In this blog post, I would like to briefly discuss some reasons why you should engage in the spiritual discipline of Bible reading regularly, how you can build the habit of regular Bible reading into your life, and some ways to approach the Bible

Why you should read the Bible regularly

What you read influences you. Think about how reading your newsfeed makes you feel. Reading the Bible regularly and consistently has several benefits. First, the Bible shows us God’s character and gives us God’s revelation of himself to his people. In every passage of the Bible we see God’s holy, unchanging, faithful, gracious and loving character.

Second, when it comes to the subject of Scripture, 2 Timothy 3:16–17 says that it is “profitable for teaching, for correction, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” The next verse goes on to say that this leads to completeness and endowment “to every good work” (ESV).

Third, regular reading of God’s Word realigns our thinking so we can mature, which is part of the Christian calling (Ephesians 4:14-16; Romans 12:1-2). Have you ever met a mature Christian who has not read the Bible regularly? These three things are really just the beginning, this list could contain dozens of reasons why you should read the Bible regularly.

How to incorporate regular Bible reading into your life

Reading the Bible is a spiritual discipline, which means we need to be disciplined in how we go about it. If you lack the desire to read the Bible, pray and ask God to give you a desire for His Word. Then build a time into your day to read the scriptures and make that time a priority. You should then find people who will put you in charge of a reading schedule. Maybe even start a reading schedule with someone.

The Right Approach to the Bible

While reading the Bible regularly is a good place to start, it is also important to approach the Bible properly. It is easy to get used to just focusing on application when reading the Bible. It is absolutely necessary for the Christian to apply the Bible to his life, but sometimes we can make applications that are forced or unintentional.

To avoid misapplying texts, it is good to read entire books of the Bible and try to understand the text both in the light of its immediate context and in the light of the whole book of the Bible. Always ask what the text says about the character and nature of God.

How to Build a Relationship with God

As we live in a culture increasingly inclined towards commerce, materialism and secularism, feeding the soul is not always easy.

The challenge of these days, when times are not propitious for spiritual growth, is to nurture, nourish, heal, restore and renew the soul. Here are 21 practical suggestions for building a stronger spiritual life.

1. Be a river, not a swamp.

The Bible says: “Out of the hearts of those who believe in me rivers of living water shall flow” (John 7:38, margin).* Remember that it is the mountain stream that carries fresh, life-giving water because it flows out . However, the swamp is stagnant and life-consuming. A swamp collects and retains water that finds its way. Don’t be the type of person who tries to accumulate a lot before letting a little flow through.

As Christians, we are to let blessings flow through us and to others. When we hoard and contain the blessings in our lives, we run the risk of becoming spiritually stagnant, emotionally distant, and intellectually cynical. Decide to break the dam and let blessings flow like a river. The freshness is in the flow.

2. Identify blessings.

Too often we go through life without noticing the good that is pouring into our lives. Try this spiritual practice for a week: At the end of the first day, identify a blessing you received from a family member. At the end of the second day, a blessing from a neighbor. Third day, from a friend. Fourth day, from a work colleague. Fifth day, by a stranger. Sixth day, from a child. On the seventh day, a blessing that came from an “enemy.”

3. Be like Moses – speak blessings.

One of the most beautiful and compassionate passages in the Bible contains these words of blessing spoken by Moses:

May the Lord bless and protect you.

May the Lord smile on you and have mercy on you.

May the Lord show you His favor and give you His peace

(Numbers 6:24-26).

Get creative with language and speak words that uplift, encourage, encourage and bless other people. As you build them up, your own spirit will become stronger.

4. Cultivate a prayer life together.

Extend the time you spend in prayer by praying with others. Some ways to do this include:

Let friends know you are always available for prayer.

Participate in regular prayer groups.

Participation in a prayer chain.

5. Take a step of faith.

Spiritual growth means taking a leap of faith from time to time. Instead of trying to put everything in order before you start something important, why not follow God’s leading and allow the plan to unfold? This means taking a step of faith and trusting that God will provide what is required for success.

6. Restore someone’s faith.

Take the time today to heal a wounded heart, be kind to someone who really needs a friend, or help collect pieces of a broken dream. Do everything you can today to radiate God’s unconditional love.

7. Be a grateful person.

Begin each day with a morning prayer of gratitude to God for the gift of a new day. Do this even if the coming day seems ominous. End each day with an evening prayer of thanksgiving to God for the gift of the previous hours. Do this even if you’ve had a very rough day.

8. Share the journey.

Meet another person who is striving to grow spiritually. Arrange to meet once a week for a set time to study and reflect on spiritual matters. A friend of mine who is a busy executive in Toronto, Ontario met another man for six months to study the Bible. “No matter how hectic our schedules were, we always met each week during our lunch break at a downtown church, who kindly provided a space for our meeting. Those were good months with a lot of spiritual growth happening,” he says.

9. Serving.

Look for ways to serve the community, especially chores that don’t promise a reward, like picking up trash on the streets. Read and reflect on Jesus’ actions in John 13:1-5.

10. Cultivate a little solitude.

“Loneliness makes us harder on ourselves and tenderer on others; in both respects it improves our character,” remarked the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. Spend some time away from the crowd and noise of life. Take a few minutes to be alone—just you and God. In stillness we turn our minds away from life’s problems and fix our thoughts on the Spirit of God.

11. Fasting and prayer.

The prayer associated with fasting was often performed by people in the Bible. Ezra 8:23 reports, “So we fasted and prayed earnestly that our God would provide for us, and he answered our prayer.” The next time you are asked to pray urgently for someone in trouble, you should join in your prayer combine some fasting.

12. Surrender your worries to God.

This is a clear teaching of Scripture: “Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you” (Psalm 55:22). Do this every time a concern arises.

13. Spread love wherever you go.

This is the advice of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who advised: “Spread love wherever you go: first of all in your own home. . . . Never let anyone come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s goodness; Kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.”

14. Keep track of your priorities.

Knowing what ultimately matters and what doesn’t. Remember the words of former President George Bush: “I have been blessed with a close and wonderful family, and I want to spend the rest of my life letting them know how much I love and appreciate them,” he said. “One of my main achievements that I’m still working on is being a big hit in the grandfather business. I want to be remembered for integrity, service and family.”

15. Strive for excellence.

The Bible tells us, “Whatever you do, do well” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). Be the best you can be no matter where in life God has placed you.

16. Use it or lose it.

God has generously endowed each of us with unique gifts and talents. Use them or you risk losing them. “Use your gifts faithfully, and they will increase; Practice what you know and you will advance to higher knowledge,” remarked the 19th-century poet Sir Edwin Arnold.

17. Meditate on Scripture.

The Bible is filled with verses of comfort, encouragement, and wisdom. Make a habit of reading and studying your Bible regularly and with discipline. Highlight verses that speak to you. Meditate on these words. Memorize a few passages so that you can recall them at a later time.

18. Be reliable.

Do what you say – whether it’s convenient or not. Fulfill all your commitments, big or small. Through your actions, show others that you are a person who can be trusted and relied on.

19. Ask God to bless you today.

A great way to grow in wonder and wonder is to ask God to turn your life into a blessing. Do this every morning before resuming your daily activities. Say a short, simple prayer like this: “Dear God, make my life this day a blessing to someone, somewhere.” Then pay close attention to each person you meet during the day, for God will honor your prayer, sometimes a surprising one Way.

20. Spend time in nature.

This was done by the psalmists, and they gathered spiritual lessons from their time in nature. “The heavens tell of the glory of God. Heaven shows its marvelous craftsmanship” (Psalm 19:1). “When I look up at the night sky and see the work of your fingers – the moon and stars you have set in place – what are mortals that you should think of us, mere men that you should care for us? ‘ (Psalm 8:3-4). “Mountains rose and valleys fell to the height you set. Then you have set a firm limit to the seas, so that they will never cover the earth again” (Psalm 104:8, 9).

21. Exercise your agency.

No matter what happens to you, you always have the freedom to choose. You can choose joy over despair. You can choose love over hate. You can choose forgiveness over revenge. You can choose growth over stagnation. Remember that a crisis can bring out the best in us or the worst in us. The choice is ours!

How do you stay close to God?

  6. Keep a reminder of God’s love.

How to Build a Relationship with God

Have you ever wondered how you can stay strong in your faith when everyone around you seems to be struggling? No one is perfect, and it is normal to stray from the path the Lord has laid out for you from time to time. What matters is how you respond to these challenges. If the people around you don’t keep their faith, you can still stay strong. Read on to learn more about standing tall and maintaining your relationship with God even when everyone around you is collapsing.

What happens when you draw near to God?

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” This Bible verse tells us that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. The catch here is that we can’t be walking in sin and be close to God. He wants us to have pure hearts, pure minds, and to be humble.

Please help our YouTube channel if you like our video. Let’s grow together!

Have you ever wondered how you can get closer to God?

It doesn’t matter who you are, at some point we all struggle with our beliefs. It can be a struggle with illness, a family or personal issue, or simply a gap in your relationship with God. It’s always good to reconnect.

So let’s take a look at some ideas on how to get closer to God spiritually by adopting some simple habits for spiritual growth.

In a previous post, How to Increase Your Faith in God, I mentioned several daily habits we can adopt to put God first in our lives. This is our opportunity to delve deeper into those habits.

If you don’t incorporate these daily habits into your life, you may find a crack in the armor of your growing relationship with God. I encourage you to take a good look at your life, add the missing things and find ways to draw closer to God.

Make sure you grab your checklist (below) of tips to increase your faith from this post. ⤵️

How do I get closer to God?

The list below contains 15 daily activities you can do to draw closer to God. Have you ever thought of describing your relationship with Jesus? What kind of activities would you be doing if you were right with him when he planted his first church?

As you incorporate these activities into your life (except for the first one, as you learned from Jesus Himself), you will find your relationship with God growing.

One last thing before we get into the details: Joining your local New Testament church is the best way to get closer to God.

After accepting Jesus as your Savior, the next step in obedience is to be baptized into a true New Testament church. By true I mean one that follows all of Jesus’ teachings.

It is not enough to choose any old church. Make sure the teachings are consistent with the Bible. That’s more important than a feel-good church that offers a basketball court and parties on weekends (but that’s a topic for another blog post.)

Subsequent baptism and membership in a true church will align you with the will of God. After all, that’s our goal, isn’t it?

Open your Bible

One of the best ways to draw closer to God is to open the Bible each day. It doesn’t matter if you’re just reading your Bible, doing a Bible study, or doing daily devotions, spending time in God’s Word will bring you closer to the Lord.

The Bible is God’s manual. If you don’t know what’s in there, you’ll never understand how to successfully play the game of life by God’s rules. It’s no surprise that you will find tons of Bible verses to help you get closer to God. You can find some of them scattered throughout this post.

There are great Bible studies. I love praying the promises of God and Bible Study Methods: 7 Ways in 7 Days.

I don’t know about you, but I long to hear my Heavenly Father say, “Well done, but a good and faithful servant.” Be sure to pray first, though. I personally want God to open my heart before I start digging into His Word!

Pray

“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV. There you have it, Paul’s instructions on how to draw closer to God. talk to god Prayer is a gift. Praise Him, thank Him, ask Him on behalf of others and for yourself. Prayer is simply speaking to God through His Son Jesus Christ.

Even if you don’t know what to say or if your heart is too heavy to put into words, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us when this happens, for He knows our hearts, always.

A great way to build your prayer life is to create a custom war binder or prayer journal, which is a notebook with different sections that document your walk with God. A war binder is a miniature version of the room made famous in the War Room movie. If you haven’t seen the film yet, take the time to watch it. It will encourage you as you draw closer to the Lord.

Romans 8:26 KJV tells us that the Spirit helps even our infirmities: for we do not know what to pray for, how we should; but the Spirit itself intercedes for us with inexpressible groans.

fellowship with other Christians

We can have fellowship with our worldly friends who are likely to lead us away from God, or we can have fellowship with other Christians who understand God and His policies. These friends encourage us to draw closer to the Lord. These truly are the best friends you will ever have because they look out for your best interests, heart and soul.

be humble

If you think you have more control over your life than God, you’d better think again. God has a plan for your life. Our job is to follow God’s will and live by that plan. This does not mean that we are puppets and cannot set goals.

We are given the privilege and curse of free will. It’s a privilege because it gives us choice. But it’s a curse because when we make a bad choice, we reap the consequences of that choice. Your best plan is to seek God’s will for your life and humble yourself before Him. Let him guide you.

serve others

Jesus was a servant. He invites us to humble ourselves and also to serve others.

Matthew 23:11-12 KJV But the greatest among you shall be your servant. And he who exalts himself is humbled; and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done by contention or boasting; but in humility each should value the other above himself.

If we want a closer relationship with God, we must obey His commandments and not put other gods before Him and love others as ourselves. We serve others as we obey His second commandment. Doing one’s will through service means following Scripture to draw closer to God.

I suggest that you encourage others whenever you can. Check out 9 quick and easy benefits of kindness for some of the earthly rewards of your ministry.

Confess your sins and repent of your bad habits

If you have unrepentant sins in your life, the Lord will not listen to your prayers. So confess, friends, and turn from these sins. I have a friend who recently had cancer. She always asked for prayer. But as she did, she added, “But repent first, I want God to answer those prayers.”

Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you from hearing.

We want to get closer to God spiritually, so confess your sins and repent or turn away from them.

love others

We all show love in our lives. There is love for your spouse, your children and your friends and then there is agape love. This love demonstrates God’s immeasurable, matchless love for human beings.

Jesus showed agape love when he gave himself on Calvary’s cross as a ransom for all mankind. He showed love to people who hated him, and he wants us to show that kind of love to others. It’s easy to love those who love us. But it’s important to love those who don’t love.

Luke 6:27-28 But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who harm you.

Love everyone, always! It’s not just a slogan, it’s an imperative.

Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and most important commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Show gratitude

We owe so much in our lives. Where do these blessings come from? From God of course! Part of our prayer life should be thanking the Lord for all the many blessings He has given us.

I’m not talking about the stuff we have. Of course we are grateful for our families, our home and our health. But recognize our freedoms and privileges, the air we breathe, nature beautiful to our eyes, and most importantly, the salvation of our souls.

It’s the things we can’t see that we sometimes neglect and take for granted. If you need help thinking of things to be grateful for, here’s a great list to jog your memory. There’s even a printable 40-day gratitude calendar if you need one. Gratitude A to Z: Things to be thankful for.

Be kind everywhere

It’s so important to show kindness. Remember what most people call the Golden Rule? As Jesus put it in his Sermon on the Mount:

Matthew 7:12 Therefore whatever you want men to do to you, do to them also; for this is the law and the prophets.

My friend AnnMarie Anderson from Busy Blessed Women recently wrote a blog post titled Why Does Kindness Matter? It answers a lot of questions and I highly recommend you check it out.

As a big fan of passing it on, I’ve made a mega list of 105 best random acts of kindness, also with a printable version, to give you tons of ideas on how to show that kindness. So show people the love of God that you have in your heart and be kind to everyone you meet. It’s a great habit for spiritual growth.

Don’t judge or criticize others

Matthew 7:1-5 says it best, again when Jesus delivered his Sermon on the Mount.

Do not judge, lest you be judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and with what measure you measure, it will be measured back to you. And why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the log in your own eye? Or how will you say to your brother: Let me take the speck out of your eye; and behold, there is a beam in your own eye? You hypocrite, first pull the log out of your own eye; and then you will see clearly how you cast the speck out of your brother’s eye.

I guess I can’t add much more to that, can I? Jesus is the one we should listen to, right? If you are looking for ways to establish a spiritual connection with God, then follow the words highlighted in red from the greatest manual ever written, God’s Holy Word.

Stay connected to God

How do you get closer to God spiritually? Include Him in absolutely everything you do. Are you struggling with work? Take it to God! Is your 2 year old having fun? Pray for it!

Trying to decide which car to buy or struggling to pay your bills? Include the Lord in all your decisions. Talk to him all day. Pray about everything. Praise Him, thank Him, ask for help and guidance.

Truly, in everything you do, you should ask the Lord for input. Stay connected to God and He will stay connected to you. It’s really quite simple. As you know, I’ve been through some pretty tough times. I gave more tips on habits for spiritual growth in How to Approach God After Tragedy.

Share God’s Word

The great commission given to all New Testament churches comes from Matthew 28:19, which says:

Therefore go and teach all nations and baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

The very first word that Jesus says to us is Go! These are Jesus’ words. He doesn’t want us to sit around and hide His Word in our hearts.

Our job as Christians is to share the good news with others. If you got a great deal on shoes, you would tell anyone who would listen. Well, saving our souls and protecting them from eternal damnation is the best business of our lives.

Why would you hide that? I know our friends and family are the worst listeners, but you have to try. We don’t have to save them, that’s up to Jesus, but we just have to be the messenger.

Believe God’s word

How can you get closer to God spiritually if you don’t trust Him? God’s Word is His instruction manual for life. These are God’s words breathed into the 40+ men who wrote the Bible. Over the course of 1500 years, the 66 books of the Bible were written. Look for different scriptures to draw closer to God. I guarantee you will find dozens on every page of the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that “All Scripture is given by inspiration from God, and is useful for teaching, for correction, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for all good deeds.

This verse tells us the how and why of the Bible. But the most important part is faith. You just have to believe that God is who he says he is. Go back to the original post, How to Strengthen Your Faith in God When You Are Struggling with Faith.

I understand that it can be difficult to just trust someone you can’t see or touch. But you know He exists based on the evidence around you. Consider the Biblical definition of faith.

Hebrews 11:1 But faith is the substance of what is hoped for, the proof of things not seen.

Believe in God and trust Him with everything, and there is no greater habit for spiritual growth.

Do God’s word

Is it enough just to read God’s Word or to listen to the sermon? Not at all! You must act on the instructions you give us. In other words, you must “do” God’s Word.

James 1:22 KJV says that we should be their doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves.

There are many action words that we are asked to follow in our teaching manual, the Bible. Walk, do, believe, trust, preach, love, bless, pray and so on and so forth. So what should we do with these action words? We just do what it tells us.

Some of this is easy and some is hard, but God will lift you up and help you get the job done. Another action word you need is trust. Connecting with God means you trust Him. If you trust him, he will help you. So keep busy, go and do!

How to Build a Relationship with God

We have an innate desire to love and be loved. That’s why personal relationships are important to us and we sacrifice our time and energy to keep them healthy. Effective two-way communication and service fuel our relationships with family, friends, and co-workers. The same applies to a relationship with God.

A relationship with God is different from our relationship with the people in our lives. For example, these people seem easier to reach. While we may not be speaking face-to-face with God, we can all have a deeper, more loving connection with Him than with anyone else.

Talk to him through daily prayer

The best way to establish and maintain a relationship with anyone, including God, is through communication, and we use prayer to communicate with God.

God wants to hear from you and He is always ready to listen to you. He wants to hear about your day, He wants to hear what you’re grateful for, and He wants to hear how He can help you.

Gordon B. Hinckley said, “Never assume you can do it alone. They need the Lord’s help. Never hesitate to get on your knees and talk to Him in a private place. What a wonderful and wonderful thing prayer is. Remember. We can actually talk to our Heavenly Father.”

Read the Scriptures

Quality talks are not one-way. Everyone takes the time to talk and listen. Are you ready to listen to God’s answers to your prayers?

Richard G. Scott described his experience of receiving guidance from God:

When faced with a very difficult matter, this is how I try to understand what to do. I am fasting. I pray to find and understand helpful scriptures. This process is cyclical. I start reading a scripture; I ponder what the verse means and pray for inspiration. Then I ponder and pray to know if I’ve caught everything the Lord wants of me. Often more impressions come with a better understanding of the teachings.

Do you wonder if what you are feeling or hearing is from God or from your own mind? You can trust that everything that leads you to draw closer to Jesus Christ and to live as He taught comes from God.

serve others

One of the best ways to express your love for God is through service to others. If that sounds contradictory, remember that God is a heavenly Father who cares about His children. He is grateful when we share his love with one another.

This story of a group of men who spent years helping a woman in need might inspire you to get in touch too. The men didn’t want to help at first, but over time they found that selflessness made more than just God happy—it made them happy.
