If you’re having trouble figuring out how to overwrite a line in your document, then you’ve come to the right place.

Back then, files were forwarded and printed out to be filled out. After that, they are sent back to complete the document processing cycle. Among the different types of documents, forms are the main cause of this back and forth transfer of files.

With today’s technology, we no longer need to print out documents just to fill them out. With MS Word we can insert your name, address and other information directly into your document. Filling out forms in word processing format requires users to be able to enter text across blank lines.

Now there are about three ways to overwrite a line in MS Word.

3 ways to type over a line in MS Word

Using an underlined tab stop

Using a line tool

Using a table cell

We’ll walk you through each step of these methods. You can rest assured that the steps in this guide are relatively easy to follow since we wrote it for beginners. So don’t be intimidated at all.

Using an underlined tab to allow users to overwrite a line in your document would be the simplest of the three methods. This is because you only need to use one common text formatting feature. On the other hand, the other two methods use objects like the line and table tools. You’ll find that these two methods are easier to format and more flexible in terms of layout.

Let’s start!

Why would you overwrite a line in MS Word?

In most cases, forms are filled out electronically, eliminating the need for printing. In this case, you need to make sure your lines are intact when others overwrite them. A common mistake is when users try to fill out your form and the text doesn’t get written across the line, it actually gets truncated.

For this reason, learning to get the override lines right is a crucial part of form creation. You will find that overwriting a line in MS Word is an essential skill, especially if you edit electronic forms on a daily basis. Well, here are a few situations where overriding a line is most useful. You will want to overwrite a line when:

You want to create an electronically fillable form.

You want to create a form template that has room for changes and revisions.

You want to fill out forms in word processing format.

You want to create a survey or quiz that requires respondents to enter their answers.

These situations are just general examples, which means you don’t have to follow them strictly. We suspect that you will discover other reasons when using this feature in the future.

With that in mind, here is everything you need to know about how to overwrite a line in MS Word.

Method 1: Overwrite a line with an underlined tab space

As mentioned above, this method is the most basic of the three. In this method, you will learn how to use a text formatting tool so other users can overwrite a line in your document.

Here’s how you can do that.

Step 1: Open a Word document.

Before anything else, we need to open a Word file. Feel free to use your own personal document where you need to overwrite a line. Otherwise, you can always create a new document to follow us step by step. Fill it out with a form or a related format.

Step 2: Use the Tab key.

Once your document is ready, move your cursor to where you want to start typing across the line. Then press the Tab key several times to create enough space. Now select the tabs you just created.

Step 3: Use the underline tool.

After selecting the tab area, go to the Home tab and click the Underline button in the Font group. Alternatively, you can just press Ctrl + U.

Note that the Underline button offers multiple styles for your underline. A straight line is the default format for forms.

Congratulations! You can now start overwriting a line in MS Word. If you want to edit the spacing around the text above the line, you can jump to the Editing and Deleting Text Above a Line in MS Word section.

Method 2: Tap over a line with the line tool

In this method, we will walk you through the steps on how to use the line tool to overwrite a line in MS Word. The line tool is one of the many shape tools you can find in the Illustration group. You will learn how to properly place them around the text to outline the gaps to be filled.

Here’s how you can use the line tool.

Step 1: Open an MS Word document.

First, we need to open a Word document. If you don’t have one yet, feel free to create a new file. Otherwise, you can choose to use your own personal document. Don’t worry about messing it up as changes can easily be undone with this tool. Just press the CTRL + Z keys on your keyboard to undo the steps.

Step 2: Draw a line.

After your document is open, go to the Insert menu and click the Shapes dropdown menu. From there select the line tool that is in the very first row of the selection.

Click and drag the mouse to start drawing the line. Press Shift to ensure the line stays completely straight.

Once the line is drawn, you can still resize it and edit its length. Just click on the line and drag the ends to move it. You should place your line just below the main text line.

Congratulations on using the line tool to overwrite a line in MS Word!

Method 3: Overwrite a row using a table cell

Another way to overwrite a row is to insert a table. If you are creating a document that has a lot of blank lines to fill in, you can also create it using a table. This way the layout of the labels and blank lines will look nicer and more professional.

Here’s how you can use a table cell to overwrite a row.

Step 1: Open an MS Word file.

The first thing we need to do is open a Word document. For this method, it’s best to create a new blank document so you can figure out later what table layout you want to use. This way you can just copy and paste the finished spreadsheet into your document instead of creating it there from scratch.

Step 2: Insert a table.

Go to the Insert menu and click the Table button. For this example we will create a 4×3 table to allow for six labels with corresponding rows.

This is where you want to enter the captions. Also, we need to adjust the column width a bit so that we have enough space to overwrite the rows. By default, columns and rows are evenly spaced.

Step 3: Edit the cell borders.

Select the entire table by clicking the four arrows icon in the top right corner of the table.

Go to the “Design” tab and click on the “Frame” dropdown menu. Now select No border from the options.

Click any cell in the second column. Then click the Margins button again and choose Bottom Margin. Repeat this process for the other cells.

Note that you must do this for each cell individually, since the borders of one cell can also be the borders of another cell.

Voila! You just used a table to overwrite a row in MS Word.

Edit and delete text above a line in MS Word

In some cases you may need to edit or delete text above a line in MS Word. This is usually when you need to revise or omit some parts of your form.

Editing and deleting underlined tabs

To edit the underlined tab spacing we used for Method 1, simply press Tab to add more tabs or Backspace to shorten the line. Select the entire tab range and press Delete to remove them all at once.

Edit and delete the line shape

Click on the line and drag the circles on the edge to shorten or lengthen the line. Otherwise, press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete the line.

Additionally, you can go to the Format tab to further customize your line.

Editing and deleting bottom borders

If you used the third method, just go to the Format tab after selecting your spreadsheet. Select the cells you want to edit. Then click the “Borders” button and choose “No Borders” to erase the bottom borders of the table cells.

Conclusion

We have finally come to the end of this article. Hopefully we helped you figure out how to overwrite a line in MS Word. Before we let you go, allow us to give you a quick recap of what we discussed today.

There are a number of reasons why you might want to overwrite a line in MS Word. The most common situation is when you want to prepare a document that will be filled out electronically by others. In this guide, we have shown you three methods to overwrite a line in MS Word. All are equally useful and easy to use. The first method allows us to use MS Word’s Underline text formatting feature. On the other hand, the second and third methods use the line and table tools, respectively.

We hope you found this article helpful!

Study Tip of the Day: Using MS Word Notebook View

BRA

When we take notes in class, we often use Microsoft Word. However, since we are not familiar with all aspects of MS Word, we often don’t use this powerful tool.

An example of how taking notes can become a lot more useful is when using MS Word’s “Notebook Layout” view. It’s very easy to do and can improve your ability to take good notes and learn from those notes more productively.

When you open a new document in Word, go to the top of your page and click View. Choose Notebook Layout.

When you do this, you get a nice rendering of a notebook page with a top border labeled “Title” and the date and time already added. You’ll also see virtual “dividers” to help you organize your notes.

As you start typing in this layout view, you’ll notice that your text is preceded by a bullet. Enter a subject such as “There are four ways to start a paragraph.” Press Enter and then Tab. The next level of text is also automatically bulleted, but you’ll notice that the original subject’s bullet has become an arrow that you can click to open and close the sub-points under the subject.

Now enter four periods with a line break underneath, for example “Story”, “Question/Statement”, “Quote” and “In Medias Res.”

Now that you have that list, go back to “Story”, press an extra Enter key, then another tab and type in “Tell a story to pique the reader’s interest”.

You’ll see that not only is the next level bulleted, but the bullet before “Story” has also become an arrow, which you can use to collapse text.

How does this help you? Well, if you’re following an instructor who first outlines the points they want to cover and then fills in the outline (like many college professors do), you can easily follow them using Word’s notebook layout. When it comes to learning, you can collapse points you want to hide from yourself, quiz yourself, and then view the answers in your own notes.

In the home menu you can also select “Scribble” to draw a picture, you can insert a table and rearrange your notes easily. You can also set up a notification in Outlook Tasks to add something to your calendar and notify you, e.g. B. “Quiz in English”.

Because there are tabs, you can make notes for more than one class in layout view. The View menu lets you play with the look of your notes, you can choose different colored tabs for the dividers, you can name the dividers, and you can change page numbers.

The third section lets you add audio notes to your page, for example if you want to record your algebra teacher’s explanation of an equation you just can’t crack.

I highly recommend playing with the “notebook layout” before you come to class, as you’ll want to implement as many features as possible when you come to class.

(Make sure to post your great notes on the class WIKI too!!)
