Need help.. Bees in my wood pile

Two things I found… First, one night I snuck onto a ground nest in the daylilies. Turned on the flashlight to locate it. I thought it was ok. As soon as the light hit the guard bees, they came after me. It was 50 meters before I had enough sanity to drop the flashlight. You will fly in the dark! I once again emphasized this when insulating an attic. Something kept pinging from my clamp light. I looked back and saw the nest in a gable chimney behind me. They flew past me and attacked the light.

The other thing involves putting bee spray or gas into the hole. If you take a mason jar and screw it into the bottom over the hole after spraying, the sun will heat the air in the jar and push the steam deeper into the hole when the sun comes out.

Honey Bees in Wood Pile — Home Sweet Bees

Honey bees in the woodpile

It’s cold and possibly snowing again so here’s one of the bee rescues that David Draker and I completed a few years ago. The caller worked at a company in the St James Industrial Park and noticed bees flying around one of their piles of scrap wood telling us a swarm had moved in.

It looked relatively quiet when we arrived, but we were there early in the morning, before the sun was up very long and before anything had warmed up, including us.

As we checked the woodpile, a few small faces appeared.

OT: YIPES! Bees in the wood pile

Dominic in Buck’s County PA

> So this afternoon I’m cleaning up around the old woodpile before mowing the lawn when I notice some big weeds growing behind the logs. So I climb into the woodpile and start pulling. Then I hear this strange buzzing. Like a bunch of little chainsaws….or maybe….BEES!! Before I can even get out of there, one nails me just behind the knee and another on the thigh. I let out a mighty YELP and tumbled like a ninja on a double mocha espresso.

It seems that a hive of those nasty little “ground” bees (I don’t know or don’t care what their real names are) made a hive in one of the Osage logs I have. These bees are smaller than the regular honey bees. I usually see them building a nest in a hole in the ground. I usually leave bees alone and vice versa. But these guys just invaded my personal space and caused me pain. So IT’S GOING!!

I walk to the garage and mutter to myself, “Well, they wanted a war, they got a war!” Armed with some long-range wasp spray, I set about flooding (from a safe distance) the area I think I see them coming from. I get spray for about 30 seconds and the can dies on me (note to self: should have bought a new spray can after using wasp spray to kill carpenter bees).

So off to the hardware store where I buy some spray. I water the area and go inside to wait until all the little *#^%@ are dead. I come out later and see the death toll isn’t quite what I expected. In fact, there seem to be MORE of these little winged assassins flying around. This leads me to believe that I didn’t get the main stick or not.

Does anyone have any recommendations (besides burning the woodpile)? Does anyone know of a readily available spray that will MURDER those little &*#())@ (because I’m way too mad just to kill them!) and prevent them from coming back?

See you,

Dominik
