When people ask you what your zodiac sign is, chances are your sun sign is falling out of your mouth. It’s certainly the easiest to figure out: All you need to know is your birthday – you don’t have to rely on birth certificates or a family member’s memory to determine your birth time like you do to determine the rest of your astrological placements.

Although astrology in general has been practiced for thousands of generations, horoscopes as we know them today, with your sun sign as the primary hallmark, have only been the norm since the 1930s when British astrologer R.H. Naylor began publishing predictions for the royal family based on their birth charts in the newspaper. Readers were curious about their own astrological predictions, so Naylor simplified his readings for them by focusing on sun signs. In the 1970s, queer and feminist newspapers began publishing a similar horoscope format, and prominent astrologer Linda Goodman brought the importance of identifying only with your sun sign into the mainstream in 1968 with her popular book Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs.

However, reading a horoscope just for your sun sign will only give you a glimpse of the most important people or facets of your life. Your sun sign — determined by the position of the sun on the day you were born — may be an important part of who you are, but it doesn’t always fully represent you. Your rising sign, on the other hand, does.

Knowing your birth time is crucial for your rising sign as it helps determine which sign was on the eastern horizon at that moment – down to the minute. Also known as your Ascendant, it represents the integration of all things that make up your horoscope and your life. The rising sign is about your identity and your perspective on the world, unlike the sun sign, which governs the issues denoted by the house in which you have Leo in your horoscope. Because of this, you may find that the horoscope resonates even more for your ascendant.

The chart rotation method

When astrologers – like me – write horoscopes, we create what is called a sunrise chart with a zodiac wheel that looks like a circle divided into 12 sections to represent each zodiac sign and the 12 houses and planets.
