Samsung phones sold in the US are notoriously difficult to root. Samsung Knox makes rooting particularly troublesome, and it tends to break a lot of things if you manage to root. US users cannot even unlock the bootloader to even root their devices. However, every now and then developers find an exploit that allows us to root. For example, Snapdragon Galaxy S7, Snapdragon Galaxy S8, and Snapdragon Galaxy Note 8 could be rooted using exploits. The same developers behind the SamPWND exploit for the S8/Note 8 are back again with exploits that allow root access to Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 – although there is a catch.

The catch is that rooting the Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 requires a specific version of Android to be installed on the devices. Root is not available for the devices on the current firmware at this time. Currently, you can only root Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 if you are running Android 8.0 or 8.1 Oreo. These are two major versions of Android behind the current Android 10-based version. They also need to be running what’s called combo firmware – firmware that Samsung uses for testing at the factory. The combined firmware is the only reason why root is possible, but it also has its own limitation: flashing unfortunately limits the battery charge to a maximum of 80%. On the other hand, Samsung Knox still works (because you don’t unlock the bootloader), so apps like Secure Folder or Samsung Pay still work. Also, you can keep your warranty in countries where software modifications may void it.

Another unique feature of this rooting method for the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Note 9 is that it doesn’t use Magisk, which means this isn’t a systemless root. SuperSU is used instead. Since the bootloader is still locked, there’s no way to patch the boot image to make Magisk work. So, with SuperSU, we get a fully system-based rooting solution. It also means it unfortunately fails SafetyNet Attestation, meaning apps like Google Pay and Pokémon Go won’t work.

Also, TWRP is not available due to Safestrap causing a kernel panic. You’ll also need to use a specific key combination every time you start your phone to ensure that the write protection is disabled. Fortunately, you can install the Xposed Framework. This allows for a lot of functionality and customization given the plethora of modules out there. Although most custom ROMs cannot be flashed due to the locked bootloader, it is possible to install a GSI. The developers have already tested and booted an AOSP Android 9 Pie GSI on the Galaxy S9+ as shown below.

Rooting is Android’s equivalent of jailbreak, a means of unlocking the operating system so you can install unauthorized apps, delete unwanted bloatware, update the operating system, replace firmware, overclock (or underclock) the processor, customize everything, and so on.

Of course, for the average user, this sounds like a daunting process – and it can be. After all, “digging” into your smartphone’s core software might seem like a recipe for disaster. One wrong move and you could end up with a bricked handset.

Thankfully, there’s a utility that makes rooting a one-click affair: KingoRoot. It’s free and works – though not on all devices.

I originally tested Kingo on a Virgin Mobile Supreme and Asus Nexus 7; The process turned out to be quick and easy. I recently used it to root a OnePlus One and this time it was even easier – because one app did all the work.

However, I couldn’t get the utility to work on a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6. Your mileage may vary of course and I definitely recommend checking the compatibility list before proceeding. (Even if your device doesn’t have it installed, the utility might work with it.) Here’s how to get started.

The app version

The easiest way to use KingoRoot is to install the app version, which literally does the rooting process with just one tap.

In fact, the only complicated part is actually getting this app on your Android device. That’s because it’s not available on the Google Play Store; Instead, you need to download the KingoRoot APK and install it manually.

Ideally, just point your device’s phone to the KingoRoot Android page and download it directly. If for some reason this doesn’t work, or you’re working from your PC, download the APK and email it to yourself as an attachment. Then on your device, open this email and download this attachment .

However, to install it, you need to make sure that your device is set to allow apps from unknown sources. Here’s how to do it on most Android versions: Go to Settings, tap Security, scroll down to Unknown Sources and toggle the switch to the on position.

Now you can install KingoRoot. Then run the app, tap One Click Root and cross your fingers. If all goes well, your device should be rooted within about 60 seconds. (On my aforementioned Galaxy S6, the process hit 90 percent, then the phone crashed and restarted. Thankfully, no harm done.)

The desktop version

Kingo’s support pages suggested that I might have better luck with the Galaxy S6 if I tried the Windows version of KingoRoot. Here is that process:

Step 1: Download and install KingoRoot for Windows. Ensure that the “Install Yahoo powered Chromium browser” option remains unchecked, and then click Decline to prevent further adware intrusion.

Step 2: Enable USB debugging mode on your phone. If running Android 4.0 or 4.1, tap Settings, Developer Options and check the box for USB Debugging. (You may need to turn “Developer Options” to “On” before you can do this.) On Android 4.2, tap “Settings”, “About phone”, “Developer options” and then turn on “USB debugging”. Then tap “OK” to confirm the setting change.

On Android 4.3+ (including 5.0, although some 4.2 versions do the same), tap Settings, About phone, then scroll down to Build number. Tap it seven times. At this point, you should see the message “You are now a developer!”

Then tap Settings, About phone, Developer options, and then enable USB debugging.” Then tap OK to confirm the setting change.

Step 3: Run Android Root on your PC and then connect your phone using the USB sync cable. After a moment, the former should show a connection to the latter. You may see the message “Allow USB debugging?” on your device screen. pop up. Turn on Always allow from this computer, then tap OK.

Step 4: Click Root, then sit back and wait while the utility does its job. After a few minutes, my Galaxy S6 hit 70 percent, and then the phone crashed and restarted again. Again, your mileage can (and most likely will) vary.

How to unroot your Android phone to get your warranty and software updates

This guide will show you how to unroot an Android phone so you can send it in for repairs, for example, and it will also show you how to re-enable software updates, which are usually disabled once you’ve rooted the device.

Disclaimer: This process will ERASE ALL DATA on the device. So, make sure to back up the phone before proceeding. The steps here are all correct at the time of writing, but FlexiSPY is not responsible for any damage that may result from trying to unroot your Android device. Ultimately, unrooting an Android device is done at your own risk and responsibility.

What is needed to unroot an Android phone?

In order to unroot an Android phone, you need the Android phone you want to unroot physically in your hand and access to a PC.

Please understand that NOT ALL SAMSUNG ANDROID PHONES CAN BE UNROOTED.

These instructions were created with a Samsung Galaxy S4 – GT-I9505.

Why do you need to unroot an Android phone?

On many Android phones, rooting the device prevents you from receiving official software updates. It also triggers a counter buried deep in the Android software that powers the phone. Whenever you send your Android device in for repair, technicians can easily locate this counter and read the value to determine if the phone has been tampered with in any way.

To view your current device status, you have two options:

On the device itself, go to Settings > About device > Status and look at the Device Status option.

If Custom is displayed, it means the device has been modified in some way, e.g. B. has been rooted or you have installed a custom ROM.

The other way to view the status is to boot in download mode.

To do this, follow these steps:

Make sure the device is completely turned off

Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power and wait for the phone to turn on again.

Press volume up to enter download mode.

Note: If your Android phone doesn’t have a home button, just press and hold the volume up and power buttons until the phone boots up.

When the Android phone is in download mode, you will see similar information as shown below.

There are three things you need to pay special attention to to determine if you currently have lost your warranty or are using a hacked Android phone.

CURRENT BINARY: If Custom is displayed, you have a Custom ROM installed.

SYSTEM STATUS: If it says Custom again, you have rooted the phone.

KNOX WARRANTY VOID: When you try to root a Samsung Android phone, it sometimes triggers the Knox flag. SuperSU can sometimes bypass this, but if not, it will show 0x1, meaning Knox has tripped and your warranty is officially void.

Knox applies to Samsung Android phones only – NOW THERE IS NO WAY TO RESET THE KNOX COUNTER!!

Ideally, you need the details on your own Android phone just like above.

To unroot an Android phone, you need to do the following:

Reinstall the default firmware on the phone – THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON THE PHONE

– An additional step is required for Samsung-based Android phones.

Samsung-based Android phones Use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter and reset the device status to Normal for Samsung phones.

If you don’t want to raise the Knox flag and void your warranty on your Samsung Android device, you need to make sure to root your Android device at kernel level by using rooting tools like Towelroot, otherwise rooting- Use tools like CF-Auto. Root automatically raises the Knox flag.

However, Towelroot will not root all Android phones and neither will CF-Auto-Root, which is why we explained at the beginning of the article that NOT ALL SAMSUNG ANDROID PHONES CAN BE UNROOTED.

For your reference, several scenarios are given below as examples of permission to unroot:

You may be wondering if Knox is only applicable to Samsung based Android phones, how can the Samsung Galaxy S3 be permanently uprooted but not the Samsung Galaxy S5?

Samsung only introduced Knox in its 4.3.x OS updates, so any Samsung Android phones that cannot run that OS version for some reason will never get Knox installed and hence this increases the chance of running them successfully uproot.

Unfortunately, you cannot downgrade a Samsung Galaxy S5 to OS 4.2.x, for example, because the Android device can only run the OS versions that Samsung intended for that device, and the newer the Android device, the more current the OS version, that it can run.

You may also be wondering how two identical phones (the Samsung Galaxy S5 in the examples) with the same OS version result in one being able to be uprooted and one not. This is due to the rooting tool used to root the device as explained at the beginning of the article.

Towelroot does not change the heart of the Android OS while rooting, but CF-Auto-Root does, and it is the change of the heart of the Android OS software (the kernel) that triggers Knox.

So, if the Android phone you want to unroot meets any of the following criteria, then it’s time to unroot it.

The Samsung Android device is not running OS 4.3 or higher

The Samsung Android device is not running OS 4.3 or later, or Knox is not installed

Samsung Android device not running OS 4.3, has Knox installed but not rooted with CF auto root

For Samsung or other Android devices, the system status is set to Custom

Samsung or another Android device has been flashed with a custom ROM

Before proceeding with the unroot process, we strongly recommend you to fully back up the phone on your PC, which you can learn by reading the article here.

We will describe the unroot process separately for both Samsung and non-Samsung Android devices.

How to unroot a non-Samsung Android device

After backing up the phone, it’s time to flash the phone with a stock ROM. This will ERASE ALL DATA ON THE PHONE, which is why we asked you to make a backup first. We’ve already covered how to flash a stock ROM on an Android phone, so you can follow the steps in this article.

The above article for stock ROMs is for Samsung based Android phones. It may be more difficult for other manufacturers to go back to the stock ROM, so please use Google to research how to accomplish this task.

Once you have flashed the non-Samsung Android phone with the stock firmware, you need to root the phone again.

At this point in the article, you should hopefully have done the following:

Completely backup Android device to your PC.

Flashed back a stock ROM from the official manufacturer.

Phone rooted again.

Once the phone is rooted again and SuperSU is installed, simply use the Full Unroot option found in SuperSU.

Now that you’ve flashed a stock ROM on the non-Android phone and performed a full unroot of SuperSU, the phone is now unrooted.

How to unroot a Samsung based Android phone

Unrooting a Samsung Android phone requires an extra step compared to unrooting non-Samsung Android phones. Assuming you have backed up the Samsung Android phone and flashed the phone with a stock ROM, now you need to root the phone again. To learn more about the rooting process in detail and what it involves, please also read this article completely.

At this point in the article, you should have done the following:

Completely backup Android device to your PC.

Flashed back a stock ROM from the official manufacturer.

Phone rooted again.

After you’ve done all that, it’s time to reset the flash counter.

To do this, you need to install Triangle Away on your Android device, which you can get here.

Once you have Triangle Away installed on your Android phone, run it.

It will ask for root access – grant it.

It will then try to identify your phone – Triangle Away does not work with all Android phones.

If your phone is compatible, just open Triangle Away on your phone and it will ask for root access (that’s why we had to re-root Samsung Android phone).

Assuming the Samsung Android phone is supported, Triangle Away should be able to identify the correct model. Once you’ve confirmed this, the main screen should look similar.

All you have to do is tap on the Reset Flash Counter option and then follow the instructions for Triangle Away to complete the job.

Once you’ve done that, just do a full unroot with SuperSU.

Now that you have successfully performed a full unroot, you should find that you can update the phone to the latest available firmware by going to Settings > About phone > Software update.

Please remember that after upgrading to the latest OS version, you need to root the phone again if you want root access again.
