There’s a funny iPhone “glitch” that’s been around for a few years that will probably never be fixed in the traditional sense, since it’s actually designed to be a feature of some kind. If you delete the number of someone you texted with and delete the text message thread, their number will still appear once you start typing the letters of their name in the Messages app.

Here is an example.

If you delete my number from your phone, it would disappear from your contacts. If you even entered my full name in your contacts, nothing would show up.

However, this is not the case in the Messages app. Every time you typed “Na” or “Nat” or “Nath” depending on how many times we’ve texted and how many contacts you have, my name eventually popped up at the top. My name and number would be right there in case you want to text me.

Here’s what it looks like with this fake contact I created (and then deleted): “Dun Du Dun”.

The reason has to do with an Apple feature called Recents. Recent saves the information of people you’ve recently interacted with, even if you’ve deleted their number. To remove someone from Recents, click the blue “I” icon next to the number, scroll down, and tap Remove from Recents.

I don’t think anyone could describe this as an intuitive process as Apple gives you no indication that Recents is why that damn number keeps popping up. But in fairness, it’s easy to see why Apple doesn’t think this is such a big deal. Your iPhone is simply giving you as much information as possible to try to connect you with the right person.

The problem is that deleting someone’s number often doesn’t just mean, “Well, I don’t really have room for you in my contacts.” It’s more like, “I seriously don’t want to contact you anymore.”

And my iPhone gives in to all my worst tendencies by allowing me to text that person.

To test the difference, I had my friend set her iPhone to Do Not Disturb for a text and then blocked me for a second text. When I texted her while she had Do Not Disturb turned on, I received an immediate delivery notification, even though she didn’t receive the text until after she turned Do Not Disturb off.

For the blocked iMessage, my text looked like it had been sent, but I didn’t get any confirmation whatsoever. it just sat there. So I have to conclude that if someone has Do Not Disturb mode enabled, you’ll still get delivery notifications for your messages, but not if you’ve been blocked.

5. Call on iPhone goes straight to voicemail

However, since there may be other reasons why a call you make from your phone rings once and goes straight to voicemail, it’s best to combine this step with the iMessage test to be more secure, that you have been blocked.

But how many of us have actually stopped to think about what that online status actually means? Well, today we’re going to set the record straight. Does being online on WhatsApp mean they are talking to someone?

This is the most common assumption when dealing with online status. The online status on WhatsApp shows that the user is currently using the app. This means the app is running in the foreground and has an active internet connection. However, this does not necessarily mean that the user is chatting with someone.

The online status is displayed even if the user has left WhatsApp on and their screen is on. Even if the user is simply on the chats page and scrolls through various chats, the user is displayed online.

Is WhatsApp online status correct?

WhatsApp online status is actually pretty accurate. The app only shows a user online when they are actively using the app. If you close the app or even minimize it to open another app, you will go offline on WhatsApp.

That being said, it takes a few seconds for the app to reflect the change. Typically this is in the 2-3 second range after the person closes the app. So they can appear online if they just closed the app 2-3 seconds before.

Can you appear online on WhatsApp when you’re not?

Not really. As mentioned above, WhatsApp takes a few seconds to reflect your status on the app. Therefore, you may appear online for a few seconds after closing the app. However, there is no way to stay online for a long time without actively having the app running in the foreground.

Who can see if I’m online on WhatsApp?

While WhatsApp lets you choose the audience for your “last seen” notification, there is no way to turn off your “online status” on WhatsApp. Your online status is visible to anyone you add to your contacts. This includes not only WhatsApp contacts but also your phone contacts as WhatsApp is synced with your phone contact list.

Users you haven’t added yet can only see your online status if they’ve messaged you. If a user sends you a message and you don’t block them (WhatsApp gives you the option to block a message from an unknown number), they can see your online status in the app.

Well, if you think you hide your online status completely, you can’t with WhatsApp. As mentioned above, there is no way to hide your online status. However, what you can do is turn off your read receipts as well as Last Seen. Turning off your read receipts means users won’t be able to see blue ticks when they’ve read their messages. Well, there’s a trick you can use if you don’t want to notify the person by opening their chat. This allows you to check if a person is online and even see when they were last seen on the app.

To check someone’s online status without opening their chat, launch the WhatsApp app and find the chat in the list. Long press their chat now. Tap on the three dots that appear in the top right corner and select “View Contact”.

Does WhatsApp show online status in the background?
