The legal requirements for brakes

Before you can use a tow truck, you must have brakes. They are required for legal tow truck use in all 50 states of the United States and Canada. There’s no way around it; Brakes are a must on any type of tow truck. If you ever want to sell your dolly in the future, brakes will make the sale easier. About 8 out of 10 tow trucks sold are sold with brakes.

Tow truck with disc brakes

If you decide to use disc brakes, you should know that these brakes can be used in a hydraulic system. Disc brakes have the following advantages:

4 times more efficient than drum brakes

Cool faster than drum brakes

Significantly lighter than drum brakes

Doesn’t need to be adjusted

Resistance to brake fade

A moving part

Longer lifespan

Easily replaceable friction linings

Easily accessible caliper for cleaning

Can self-adjust to prevent uneven braking

Rust, dirt and water do not affect braking

Less sensitive to premature blocking

Lower cost of ownership over the life of the tow truck with brakes

No scheduled maintenance required (changing brake fluid or adjusting brake shoes)

Braking is proportional even at low speeds

If you choose electric brakes, the system can be programmed to apply the correct brake pressure based on the total weight of the load being towed

More stopping power

When comparing trailer brakes for cars, disc brakes have more stopping power than traditional padded brakes. This means they have more power to effectively stop heavy loads. So if you are towing a large truck behind your RV you shouldn’t have to worry about it stopping at the same time as the RV.

The pressure is applied evenly

If you dig deeper into the comparison between disc brakes and drum brakes, you will find that disc brakes apply pressure more evenly than drum brakes. What does that mean? When pressure is applied to brake rotors, it is done evenly so the rotors don’t wear out unevenly. At the same time, these brakes ensure that each wheel feels the same pressure. Having each wheel experience the same pressure will prevent the dolly from tipping over.

Repair, replacement and cleaning are a breeze

You will find that disc brakes for a tow truck are a breeze to repair, replace or clean. Because the system is one piece, the caliper, you don’t have to worry about disassembling multiple parts to clean or repair another part. A disc brake system is very easy to inspect and can be removed and reinstalled on the car trailer in minutes. On top of that, you put far less stress on the towing vehicle’s brakes than if you were to use drum brakes on the towing vehicle

Tow truck with drum brakes

Not sure if disc brakes are the best option for your tow truck with brakes? Let’s examine drum brakes for your tow truck. Drum brakes are an older type of brake compared to disc brakes. Drum brakes have many disadvantages compared to disc brakes for a tow truck with brakes. Some of the disadvantages of choosing drum brakes over disc brakes are as follows:

Brake fade occurs more frequently (losing their effectiveness or stopping power)

Vibration when braking due to deformation of the drums

Retain more water than disc brakes

Drum brakes are still a popular towbar option because they cost less than disc brakes. The reason for this is that they cost less and are lighter. Drum brakes cost a lot more money, time, and effort to maintain, repair, or replace. If you only need to replace one spring, this involves removing the wheel, hub, cap and gasket. In addition, you will likely need to repackage the bearings as well.

Even though a drum brake system is a cheaper system to start with, in the long run you will end up spending more money on this type of system than if you choose disc brakes for your trailer with brakes.

Why can’t you back up with a tow dolly?

You should never attempt to back up a vehicle on a tow dolly — while it’s possible, it’s not safe and can damage both vehicles. If you need to back up, the only safe option is to detach the two vehicles and back them up individually. Four-wheels-up is the final towing option.

Towing a vehicle can be stressful. Pulling the weight of another vehicle changes the way your own car, truck or SUV feels and behaves. You may even need to make some modifications to your vehicle in order to safely tow another one. Perhaps the most stressful of all towing maneuvers for the driver is reversing a towed vehicle.

When towing a vehicle, there are a few things to keep in mind. One of the most important is visibility. You may need to fit larger side mirrors to your vehicle to improve your line of sight. Mirrors play a crucial role when you need to back up – you need to have a clear line of sight around both sides of the vehicle being towed.

It is also important to ensure that the vehicle performing the towing can handle the load. This includes reading the owner’s manual to make sure you’re not exceeding the tow weight limit. You should also make sure that trailer equipment is properly installed.

There are three main ways to tow a vehicle:

Four-wheel towing, toad or dinghy towing, is a towing method in which all four wheels of the towed vehicle are on the ground. This towing method is popular with recreational vehicle (RV) owners who often tow a vehicle behind their RV when traveling. This type of towing requires a trailer hitch and hitch. Dinghy towing doesn’t work well on some vehicles – consult your owner’s manual before attempting to toad your car.

Tow truck lifting the two front tires off the road. The rear tires of the towed vehicle are still in contact with the ground. A tow truck cannot be used on most mid- or rear-engine vehicles. Before using a tow truck, you should become familiar with the tow truck. Some vehicles work well with a dolly that lifts the two front tires off the road. The rear tires of the towed vehicle are still in contact with the ground. A tow truck cannot be used on most mid- or rear-engine vehicles. Before using a dolly, you should familiarize yourself with the dolly’s towing capacity. You should never attempt to secure a vehicle on a tow truck – while it is possible, it is not safe and can damage both vehicles. If you need to back up, the only safe option is to separate the two vehicles and back them up individually.

Four-wheel drive is the last towing option. With this option, you actually tow a trailer. The towed vehicle sits on the trailer so none of its own wheels touch the ground. Tow trailers weigh more than tow trucks, but backing up a tow truck isn’t as difficult as it is a tow truck.

We’re going to take a look at how to reverse when towing a vehicle using either the four wheels up method or the four wheels down method. Because backing up with a tow truck can be dangerous, we won’t cover that option in this article. It’s best to heed the advice of tow truck experts – avoid situations that require you to back up. If you need to back up, do so with each vehicle individually.

Let’s look at the physics involved in reversing a towed vehicle.

Will a tow dolly damage my car?

A tow dolly is designed to protect your car from wear and tear on the highway, but that’s not their only advantage. Additional security reinforcements like safety chains, tire straps, and our very own galvanized disc brakes make driving a tow dolly much safer and more enjoyable.

Are tow trucks safe?

Before we dive into our tow truck safety tips, let’s first address a common question from consumers – how safe is a tow truck?

If you’ve ever wondered whether or not tow trucks are a safe method of vehicle transportation, we’re here to clear the air once and for all – tow trucks are completely safe and secure. In fact, car tow trucks are a safer mode of transportation compared to traditional towing on the slab. A tow truck is designed to protect your car from wear and tear on the highway, but that’s not their only benefit. Additional safety reinforcements such as safety chains, tire straps and our own zinc plated disc brakes make driving a tow truck much safer and more enjoyable.

At Car Tow Dolly we design our tow trucks to be 100% safe and easy to navigate during assembly, loading and use. The reinforcements of our safety chains, wheel belts and galvanized disc brakes are just some of the features that make our tow truck the best of its kind.

Six steps for tow truck safety

Before you hit the road, it’s important to feel comfortable and safe transporting your car on your tow truck – and nothing offers quite as much peace of mind as the safety of the tow truck. By taking a few extra safety precautions, you and your tow truck will be ready for your next adventure.

Examine the Wheels Just like the wheels of your car and RV, tow truck wheels are critical to getting to your destination. If your tires appear flat or worn, be sure to replace them before hitting the road. Our car tow truck tires are designed to get the distance, but like everything else they are subject to annual wear and tear. If your wheels look ready to ride, we still recommend packing a spare tire in case of an accident. You never go anywhere without a spare tire for your car – and that goes for your dolly too. Check Wheel Straps As one of the key components that attaches your car to your dolly, wheel straps are an essential part of safe transportation. However, that doesn’t mean they’re indestructible. If you find that your straps are loose or frayed too often, it’s time to replace them with brand new wheel straps. As an extra precaution when traveling, pack two extra straps. Secure the Towbar The towbar is critical to safely transporting your vehicle. If your tow truck is not securely attached to your RV, you could be risking a mishap or an accident on the freeway. Double checking your connection is a simple task that guarantees the safety of you and others. Check the lighting system Just as with your car and RV, a lighting system ensures safe tow truck trips. Brake lights and turn signals help other drivers see your destination, so it’s important to plug in your tow truck’s lights and make sure they’re working properly. Loading Dolly-Approved Vehicles Every tow truck has its limitations. As a rule of thumb, tow trucks are designed to haul vehicles within a certain weight and size limit. Be sure to load a car that is compatible with these restrictions. Inspect other parts of the tow truck Before you set off, make a thorough inspection of your tow truck and its other parts. Check the condition of the brakes, the security of the tow truck’s safety chains, and other important features of your truck. Our maintenance package is a great way to keep your tow truck in pristine condition – and at an incredible price!

Once you’ve checked out your entire tow truck, you’re good to go!

Tips on driving tow trucks safely

Another essential part of tow dolly safety has nothing to do with the dolly – it’s all about your driving! As easy as it is to step on the gas, there are certain traffic rules you must follow when towing your vehicle. Otherwise you will encounter difficulties when driving a car!

Follow or go below the speed limit. Obeying the speed limit is essential, so don’t take any chances by speeding on the highway. Depending on the gradient or the weather, it is sometimes even better to go slightly below the speed limit. For more information, see our blog How Fast Can I Drive a Car Tow Truck?

Take turns carefully. Sharp turns can be difficult in your car, let alone a trailer hitch RV. It is best to approach these more difficult corners with caution, leaving a reasonable distance between yourself and other vehicles.

Leave Adequate Distance from Your Vehicle Due to the heavy weight you will be carrying in your vehicle, it is important to leave enough space in front of you and other vehicles on the road. This gives you enough time and space to step on the brakes.

Inspect Your Dolly at Stops If you notice anything unusual while driving, take the time to stop and inspect your dolly and your car. Making sure everything is safe and working properly protects you and other drivers. You can always fix the problem at a rest stop or campsite!

Transporting your car on our idler pulley tow truck or galvanized disc brake tow truck is incredibly safe, but it’s always best to exercise extra caution on the road. In the end, you will feel safer and happier during your travels!

Towing dolly trailers

What is a dolly trailer?

A dolly trailer, tow dolly or car dolly is a two wheel trailer that only lifts the front wheels of your car. When you tow a vehicle with a car transporter, the rear wheels of the car stay on the ground.

Whether this option is suitable for your car depends on the make and model, weight, length and ground clearance. Dollies are not designed for every type of car.

The pros and cons of using a tow truck

advantages

It’s cheaper.

It’s perfect for short trips.

You can stay with your car at any time.

Disadvantages

Not suitable for heavier vehicles.

Not suitable for longer distances.

Increased wear.

Setting up takes a long time.

Increased gas consumption.

There are security concerns.

What cars can be towed on a dolly?

What cars can be towed is a reasonable question. Let’s see if we can answer them.

Tow trucks are designed for front wheel vehicles. Your vehicle should also have a “curb weight” of 5000 pounds or less. The best way to find out whether you can tow your car with a car transporter is to consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

It is possible to tow a rear-wheel drive vehicle on a tow truck, but you must disconnect and remove the driveshaft or you will damage the transmission.

What are common problems when towing dollies?

A dolly is easy to stow and cheaper to buy or rent than any other pulling option. However, it has its own pitfalls.

weight restrictions

You cannot carry as much weight with a car dolly as you can with a trailer. Normally, a front- or four-wheel drive car cannot exceed 3,450 pounds. A rear-wheel drive car must not weigh more than 3,900 pounds.

According to a report released by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the average car weight tips the scales at more than 4,000 pounds, meaning there will be many car owners who won’t be able to use a tow truck to move their car. Let us give you some examples:

Ford Mustang: 3,700 pounds

Dodge Charger: 4160 pounds

Jeep Grand Cherokee: 5100 pounds

Mercedes Benz E Class: 3800 pounds

Chevrolet Silverado: 4800 pounds

Cadillac Escalade: 5800 pounds

Toyota Highlander: 4508 pounds

Some of the vehicles that are too heavy for a dolly are SUVs and older steel frame cars.

Can you tow a truck with a car dolly?

The simple answer is no. A truck is far too heavy to be pulled with a dolly. Tow trucks are designed to carry no more than 3,450 lbs or 3,900 lbs if the vehicle is rear wheel drive.

scope

Clearance can be an issue when considering towing with a dolly. For example, if your car is long in the front, low to the ground, or has ground effects, some of the car’s components may drag on the ground.

If you attempt to tow such a car, you run the risk of damaging the bumpers, body kit, and undercarriage parts such as deep transmission pans.

maneuverability

Compared to a car trailer, a dolly is very difficult to maneuver. When you tow a trailer, all four wheels of your vehicle are off the ground so you can back it up if necessary. This is not the case with a tow truck. Reversing a tow truck is nearly impossible, which can be a problem if you need to reverse to drop your vehicle in the right place at your final destination.

connection procedure

Hitching a car to a tow truck is also more complicated than loading a vehicle onto a trailer. When using a dolly you need to keep two wheels on the ground and the drive wheels need extra security to ensure the car stays on the dolly.

To keep the car in place, you cannot lock your vehicle’s wheels or use the emergency brake like you would with a trailer.

If you want to tow a rear wheel drive car, you need to take out the drive shaft and put it forward on the tow truck because of the front clearance issues.

wear and tear

When you tow a car with a dolly, two wheels remain on the ground, resulting in higher wear on those tires. The longer you use the dolly, the greater the wear and tear as more weight is placed on the tires when one end of the car is lifted.

How much does a car dolly cost?

The cost of a car dolly trailer ranges from $2,000 to $4,500. Actual price will depend on features such as the materials used, the dolly’s towing capacity and the type of brakes. This is a considerable expense for a one-off trip, but there is the option of renting it.

How much does it cost to rent a car scooter?

The typical cost of renting a dolly is between $40 and $60 per day. The price depends on several factors, e.g. B. the location, whether it is a one-way trip and whether the dolly is picked up and dropped off at the same place.

Companies that rent tow trucks include U-Haul, Budget Truck Rental, and Penske Truck Rental. Aside from U-Haul, most dolly rental companies only allow you to use the dolly behind one of their rental vehicles. It is not common for you to be allowed to pull behind your car with a rental dolly.

How to tow a car with a dolly

If you use a tow truck, you need to properly hook up your car before you start towing. If you want to know how to tow a vehicle on a dolly you have to follow the following steps:

1. Connect the dolly

To tow a dolly you need a ball hitch and a trailer light socket on the towing vehicle. Not all trailer light sockets are created equal, so make sure the dolly and lights match your car. If they don’t match, you need an adapter. Tow truck rentals usually offer this, or you can buy one from your local auto parts store.

When attaching the dolly, make sure you have the correct hitch and that it is the correct size. Then connect the lights and make sure they match your tow vehicle.

Park the dolly as close as possible safely and reasonably in front of the car you wish to tow. Try to get it on a flat, level floor. Leave the dolly in park and engage the parking brake.

Your dolly should be equipped with nets, straps, chains or a combination of all three. These are the key to securing your vehicle to the dolly. Lay these out so that you can wrap them around the tires if necessary.

If the dolly you are using comes with clamp or magnet taillights, make sure they are out of the way. Also, keep the connection for your car’s lights safe.

Ask a friend to help you while driving the vehicle onto the dolly. They can guide you when you’re driving very slowly and make sure you’re as centered as possible. When your car is in the correct position, apply the parking brake, shift into park, or both.

Now you can wrap the nets around the tires and fasten them. Alternatively, if you use chains or straps, wrap them around your axle. There may be a hook you can use, or you can attach it directly to your car’s towing eye or D-ring.

Never reverse your car onto the dolly. Before you drive, make sure your vehicle is well centered and strapped in securely.

2. Connect the lights

Tow trucks usually have a built-in light. However, some have a second set of lights that you magnetically attach to your towed vehicle or clip to the bumper. Use a thin layer of plastic or fabric to avoid damaging your paintwork.

Your dolly can also have a connection to use your tow vehicle’s lights. Your owner’s manual should have details on where and how to connect it to your towed car’s electrical system.

Before you drive, check all lights to make sure they are working properly. Also check all fasteners to make sure they are tight.

3. Disconnect the axle

If you are towing a rear or four wheel drive vehicle, you will need to disconnect the rear axle. To do this, you must first find the point under it where the driveshaft connects to the differential.

Once you’ve found it, you’ll need to look for the U-joint that holds the driveshaft to the differential case.

Then secure the drive shaft to the chassis of the towed vehicle using a rubber strap or belt.

Now you can remove the four screws on the U-joint and slide the drive shaft as far as you can to adjust the ratchet strap or cord.

How fast can you drive a dolly?

The maximum speed you can go when towing a car with a dolly is 55 MPH. Staying in the right two lanes is important, even on a multi-lane highway.

Is a dolly suitable for long distances?

Tow trucks are ideal for shorter distances, for example within a state. They’re a cheaper option, and you can expect less wear and tear than you would on a long-distance trip.

Using a tow truck for a long distance is not a good option. It will subject your car to a lot of wear and tear, especially the rear wheels of the vehicle. Towing an elevated vehicle long distances can also compromise the structural integrity of your car.

Are car scooters safe?

A major problem with car dollies is the so-called trailer swing. This is a fishtail motion that occurs when driving at high speeds. It’s also a leading cause of towing accidents and something that’s more likely to happen when you’re driving in inclement weather. Driving in bad weather is dangerous as the roads become slippery and it is more difficult to control the vehicle.

A car trailer is a safer option as you are loading the entire vehicle onto the trailer.

You may have noticed that we have mentioned using a trailer several times throughout this article. Let’s see if this is a viable alternative to using a tow truck.

Tow truck vs. tow trailer

A car trailer is more expensive than a tow truck, but your vehicle will wear out less. A trailer is also safer to tow, and you can use it to haul a variety of vehicles.

What is the difference between a tow truck and a car trailer?

With a car trailer, you load the entire vehicle onto the trailer and take it piggyback to your desired location. It can be hard work for the vehicle doing the towing, but for the vehicle being towed, it’s a walk in the park.

How easy is a car trailer to operate?

There is a learning curve for both a dolly and a trailer, but a trailer is easier to handle. First of all, loading and unloading is much easier. A car trailer is easier to transport than a tow truck. However, it takes practice to pull something behind your vehicle.

Car trailer wear and tear

From a wear perspective, a trailer is better than a dolly. This is because the vehicle you are towing never makes ground contact. Your odometer never changes, your tires don’t lose or tread, and your drivetrain remains untouched.

However, you must consider the additional load on the towing vehicle. And because a trailer weighs a lot more than a dolly, it can match or even exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity, causing additional stress.

Pros and cons of a car trailer

advantages

door to door service

Safe option.

No wear and tear on your vehicle.

Disadvantages

Towing a trailer requires skill and practice.

It can get more expensive when you factor in other costs like lodging, meals, and extra gas.

Tow truck vs. flat towing

Flat towing, also known as four-down or dinghy towing, involves attaching a tow bar to an appropriate car, SUV, or pickup truck and allowing the vehicle to roll on its own four tires behind the towing vehicle.

advantages

The equipment needed usually costs less than a tow truck.

Fast connection and disconnection by one person.

No additional storage is required at the final destination.

Disadvantages

Does not work on all vehicles due to powertrain limitations.

Can cause towing vehicle front tires to deflect over time.

Most flat tow dinghies cannot be backed more than a few feet.

Not suitable for long distances.

We are left with one final option to consider, and that is booking a car transport service.

Tow truck vs. car transport

We’ve already taken a close look at using a tow truck, but to understand if auto transport is the better option, you need to understand the differences between these two options.

how they work

A tow truck tows a vehicle by lifting the two front wheels of the car while keeping the rear wheels on the ground.

With a car transport company, your vehicle will be picked up from outside your home and loaded onto a car transport trailer. No wheels of your car will touch the ground and it will be safely transported to your desired destination.

vehicle compatibility

Tow trucks are intended for towing front-wheel drive vehicles. All-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive vehicles can be transported, but the driveshaft must be disconnected. There is also a weight limit for a tow truck. Front-wheel drive vehicles must weigh less than 3,450 pounds and rear-wheel drive vehicles less than 3,900 pounds.

There are no such restrictions on car transportation. A car transport company can move vehicles of all shapes, sizes and weights. Heavy cars, long, short and modified vehicles are no problem for a car transport provider like SGT Auto Transport.

Easy setup

Hitching a vehicle to a dolly is a complex undertaking, especially if you are brand new. You must also ensure that the drive wheels are extra secured to reduce the risk of accidents. Towing a vehicle with rear wheels is problematic due to the front clearance issue.

When it comes to car transportation, minimal effort is required on your part. The transport company loads and unloads the car. All you have to do is check your vehicle before loading and upon delivery to make sure everything is in order.

maneuverability

We have already explained that maneuvering a tow truck is very difficult. If you need to reverse to drop off the towed vehicle, you will find it very difficult.

This problem does not exist for car transporters. Vehicles are loaded onto the carrier and the experienced driver has no trouble reversing and maneuvering the trailer.

Costs

A tow truck is an affordable option, especially if you’re thinking about renting one. However, there are other costs to consider. Along the way, the cost of fuel, accommodation, food and drinks must be taken into account. Don’t forget to include the cost of additional wear and tear in the bill as well.

Add up all of these additional costs and the total cost is comparable to booking a car transport service.

wear and tear

When you tow a car with a dolly, the rear wheels are on the ground and carry more weight because the front wheels are lifted. Over time, this means there is some risk of additional wear and tear.

Clearance issues are another consideration as some vehicles are low to the ground or long at the front. This could mean some components being swept along when towed, causing damage to bumpers, undercarriage parts and body kits.

When a car is loaded onto a trailer, there is minimal risk of wear and tear on your tyres. When you choose an open trailer, your vehicle is exposed to the elements, but the risk of damage is virtually non-existent.

security issues

Trailer sway is a serious problem and one of the main problems with a car dolly. It is a risk when driving at high speed and in bad weather when the roads become very slippery.

Car transport, on the other hand, is a much safer option. Your vehicle will be securely attached to a car transport trailer. You can also travel to your final destination much more safely. Why not sit back and relax on a train, plane or bus knowing that your car will be safely transported to its final destination?

speed issues

Transit times are very different if you compare a tow truck to a car transport. When towing a dolly, you must maintain a below-average speed to ensure the safety of yourself, the towing vehicle, and other road users.

In contrast, a car transport provider can be a bit faster. There are some limitations on the speed a car transport trailer can go, but they are not as low as a tow truck.

Auto Transport Options

Choose car transport and you will be presented with several options to consider. Depending on your needs, a car transport company can customize their service to meet your requirements.

If your car is a standard model, open car transport is suitable. On the other hand, if your vehicle is high-end, unique, customized, classic, vintage or modified, closed car transport is a better option.

If time is of the essence, you may wish to book a guaranteed pickup or express car transport service.

Discounts are also available for certain customers, such as military and snowbirds.

DIY wheel dollies

Hi everyone, I’ve been looking into wheel dollies and anything that looked cheap looked cheap, you know what. So I thought I’d make my own. I mainly wanted them to place a ’59 Corvette that I will be restoring on so I can move it more easily. I started by finding roles that would work well. That seems to be the limiting factor. I found a guy on ebay who sells all kinds of reels and emailed him. He made me a deal for sixteen of them. They are very hard wearing yet have nice non-marring wheels. They have grease nipples on the axle and on the raceway. Then I decided to use 3/4″ plywood for the platform. I cut 12″ x 18″ pieces and glued two together with construction glue and nailed them with my trim nailer. After that, I drilled the holes and attached the casters with the at boltsonline.com. The amount I needed for this made ordering online cheaper than buying locally. In hindsight, I wish I had screwed the plywood together right after gluing them together as the screws hold the plywood together much more tightly I also think it would work better to make plywood a little larger – maybe 18 x 24. Also, it may make sense to add a 2 x 2 to each end to keep the wheel centered Cost was about 170 for rolls and 47 for hardware (with shipping on both) Here are some photos:
