A Method Insane: Effectively Drying Air-Dried Clay

I’ve discussed techniques for sculpting with air-dried clay, but in this post I want to address the very popular question, “How long does it take for air-dried clay to dry?”.

If the slow drying time of artists’ clay like Creative Paperclay has kept you from using it as a serious sculpting medium, don’t despair: there is a solution!

The quickest and most effective way to dry Creative Paperclay (and it can be applied to clays similar to La Doll) is to bake it in a standard oven. game changer.

Creative Paperclay is non-toxic and, unlike polymer clay, does not produce fumes during baking. However, due to the paper base, you must be careful not to singe it. It’s also only possible to bake a sculpture if you have NOT used things like styrofoam as anchor material.

To Bake Air Dried Clay:

Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. This prevents the clay from sticking and keeps the tray clean. Place your sculpture on the baking sheet. Keep in mind that the tray will be the hottest item in the kiln, so I try to keep as little clay as possible actually on the tray to prevent warping. Place the sheet in a cold oven and turn it on to the lowest setting (about 200-250°F). Do not put the clay in an already hot oven as it is likely to crack. The baking time depends on the size and thickness of your sculpture. A small 5 inch sculpture generally takes about 15 minutes, while a larger one will require repeated baking. I never run the kiln for more than 20-25 minutes at a time to prevent the clay from burning. Best Technique: After 15-20 minutes, turn off the oven and allow the sculpture to cool and harden in the oven. If the kiln has cooled down by then and the sculpture isn’t dry yet, I turn on the kiln for another round. Be careful when taking your sculpture out of the oven, especially when it’s still warm. Allowing it to cool completely will help you tell if it’s really dry and prevent new clay you add from cracking.
