How old is too old to start corseting? How young is too young to start corseting?

This is a touchy subject. Since the corset isn’t an incredibly mainstream activity, no law in any country (to my knowledge) has legislated regarding a “safe” age for someone to wear a corset. Also, there are so many levels to “corseting” – do we talk about waist training every day? Just a few hours a day or 23/7? Is it light cuts or extreme tightening with much bigger cuts? Are you compressing the chest or just the waist? There are as many ways to wear a corset as there are to drink alcohol. Does this mean that there should be a “blanket law” for all corsets of all sizes for all people, like there are laws for alcohol consumption?

For the sake of simplicity, in this article I’m talking specifically about waist training and tight lacing – that’s waist reductions of 3 to 4 inches or more and corsets that are worn regularly, a few times a week or every day, with moderate pressure on the floating ribs. Furthermore, these are my opinions and only my opinions. I know some corset wearers and other “corset authorities” who have similar views to mine, and some who have different views. Be aware that this is my view and does not necessarily mean everyone has the same answer – nor does it supersede medical advice from a doctor.

How young is too young to start waist training/tight lacing?

I’ve had viewers from the age of 12 asking me if it was okay to start corseting. They promise me that they will go slow and be very patient etc. Each time I will tell them the same thing:

Waist training is a form of body modification. As such, it should follow more or less the same rules and guidelines as other forms of body modification. In North America, most legal tattoo and body piercing parlors require you to be at least 18 years old — that’s the age at which you are considered an adult and responsible for your own actions and what you do with your body. Before that age, you are not considered 100% responsible for your own body. Additionally, depending on the country you live in, you must be over the age of 18 to engage in risky activities such as smoking or drinking – for example 21 in America or allegedly 25 in India. I think corseting should be treated the same way.

Whenever someone asks me for waist training permission, I feel a little uncomfortable. First, I’m essentially “just a woman on the internet.” You and I are complete strangers and I cannot give you “permission” to do or not to do anything. If you are under the age of 18, you must ask your legal guardian for permission. In general, I tell these teens the same thing that most tattoo parlors will say: You should be at least 18 years old – OR 16 years old if you have parental or guardian consent. This is to protect everyone involved:

It’s designed to protect your body from anything that goes wrong during corseting, whether it’s from the bad decision of going too far/too fast with your reduction OR accidental injuries that weren’t the cause of bad decisions.

It is designed to protect your parents from being accused of neglecting your welfare should anything happen to you.

And it’s to protect my butt from being called a “bad role model for kids” because I’ve never claimed to be a role model for kids. I’m just as much a role model as Joe smoking a cigarette outside on his lunch break or Linda having a glass of wine at dinner. I’m an adult engaging in an adult activity and trying to mind my own business.

A lot of teens might want to say at this point, “Well, I guess it’s B.S. that I’d have to wait until I’m 18 because I’m so mature for my age and I’ve stopped gaining height and I went through puberty very young, etc. etc. etc. It doesn’t matter. It has nothing to do with maturity. It has nothing to do with how old you were when your period started. It has to do with your skeleton and the fact that ALL people’s skeletons as children are mostly made up of cartilage – which is much softer and weaker than bone, and your bones don’t fully mature until around the age of 25.

Is it true that girls wore corsets 200 years ago? Yes – in fact, both girls and boys wore corsets. At the time, it was believed that this promoted good posture and reduced the risk of skeletal deformities as the child grew.

Is it true that one can still imagine wearing back orthoses in 12-year-olds as a form of therapy for scoliosis or other congenital skeletal problems? Yes, and these braces can reduce the waist by several inches and also put pressure on the rib cage, much like a corset – and all under medical supervision! But that doesn’t mean that every old, off-the-peg corset is as safe and as effective (if you want a medical corset, you’ll need to go to a corset that specializes in it). True, the younger you start reducing and exercising your waist, the more malleable your ribs are and the easier it is to get them out of the way. But cartilage is much easier to bend and/or break compared to bone – and if there’s even the slightest risk of that happening, I don’t want you to take that risk.

If you’ve been tight-laced since you were 13 and you’re fine today, I’m happy for you. I hope this would be the norm and not the exception when other young teens/tweens choose to go against my testimony and start corseting at a young age. But I do not condone wearing corsets under the age of 18 and it is very unlikely that I will change my mind about this. foot down.

If you are under 18 and just like the look of corsets, then there are cheaper options (cheaper both in quality and price). These will not pull you in more than 1-2 inches, which is about the same reduction one might expect from her belt or skinny jeans. For someone just starting to wear corsets at 75, the magnitude of the reduction would be plausible and the health concerns would be quite different.

For mature women just starting out in waist training, I would say the biggest health concerns are osteoporosis or other osteolytic autoimmune diseases, since brittle bones mean your ribs are more likely to buckle under pressure. Also, if you have a vaginal or uterine prolapse, the increased intra-abdominal pressure from a brace can make the condition worse. Also watch out for high blood pressure, circulatory problems and – depending on certain medications – your activity level and whether you smoke cigarettes or not, you need to watch out for thrombosis.

Now that might sound scary, and a lot of people might read this and say, “Oh, a corset can cause all of this?!”

Don’t necessarily cause this. But exacerbate, quite possible. In many cases, the body may already have had a pre-existing condition and the corset can only exacerbate its symptoms. But it would be unfair to blame a corset for highlighting the problems you had in the first place. Wearing a corset has actually drawn attention to certain aspects of my own body (like dairy and gluten sensitivity and my asymmetrical hips) and made me seek help to fix those issues. Had I not noticed these through the use of braces, these may have remained underlying issues that could have taken years to detect and correct.

But you see, there are so many different factors that go into a person’s health that it really goes a lot further than age. A person can be healthier at 65 than at 20. But no matter your age, make sure your body is healthy and prepared for a brace.

Healthy and prepared.

Prepared, mature enough and grown and healthy, which preferably means no underlying health problems (unless your condition is one that your doctor thinks can be improved with a brace, such as an abdominal fracture or pain from a Disc prolapse).

So you want to wear a corset and make sure you take good care of it to prolong its lifespan. There are a few steps you can take during and immediately after wearing your corset to minimize wear and tear and the need for costly cleanings.

One of the most basic pieces of corset care advice is to wear your corset with another layer between it and your skin. This is because your sweat and the natural oils in your skin rub off onto the lining. Ultimately, there will be less wear and tear on the corset to avoid both the sweat and oils and the frequent cleanings that this will lead to.

How practical it is to wear a lining depends to a large extent on your outfit: Whether it’s a waist cincher or underbust band, you’re probably already wearing it as outerwear and therefore right at the forefront. (Note that the compression will wrinkle the underlying garment.) A sweetheart corset can be worn alone as a top. If you wear your corset as a foundation, the weather may not allow for an extra layer between it and your skin.

A mistake many corset wearers make is wearing their laces around their waist. This actually rubs down the fabric of the corset. On a similar note, when it’s time to take off your corset, always remember to loosen the laces before opening the busk.

If you find you need to replace the lacing yourself, you can purchase polyester ribbon at any fabric or craft store. Even if your corset wasn’t originally laced with ties, the polyester makes for a very strong lacing. Measure how long the original laces were and adjust if you felt they were too long or too short. However, it’s always easier to cut them shorter, so it’s safer to err on the “too long” side, otherwise your corset could become difficult to put on. Buy a ribbon that is at least 1/4 inch wide; 5/8″ or wider band provides a more voluptuous look but also adds significant bulk.

After removing your corset, let it air, breathe and relax. Drape it over a hanger or the back of a chair. The fibers relax back into shape and the fresh air is good for her scent. If you’re waist training or attending an event that requires wearing corsets for consecutive days, try alternating corsets. Like your bras or shoes, your corset will break down noticeably faster if you don’t give it a break. After all, the fabric, boning and laces are subjected to significant physical stress during wear.
