Step 1 – Point the remotes towards each other

Pressing buttons on the remote control is not perceived by the box

After each step, check whether pressing the buttons on the remote control is heard by the box.

1. Check that the remote control batteries are not dead. You can use the corresponding pointer in the settings next to a string of the respective remote control.

2. Switch the MAG500A off/on (unplug/plug in the power cord).

3. Try to connect the remote again:

Press and hold the standby power button on the top cover of the STB to complete the pairing process.

Put the remote in pairing mode (press and hold the OK and Home buttons until the LED flashes).

4. If the remote still does not connect, do the following:

You can control both your TV and Set Top Box (STB) from one remote control. To program the STB button on your remote to control both at the same time:

Turn on your TV and STB. Press and hold the OK and Fiber TV buttons at the same time, then release both. The red LED light will blink twice and stay on. Press 9 7 7 to make the red LED light blink twice and stay on. Press the button to make the red LED light blink 3 times and turn off.

Note: To reset your remote control so that the button only controls the set-top box, press 9 7 7 and OK.

Features and controls of a universal remote control for LG

Top Tip – our quick recommended fix

Before attempting any of the troubleshooting steps below, we recommend removing the batteries from the remote for about a minute. Then reinsert the batteries according to the polarity (+ and -). If the problem persists, continue with the troubleshooting suggestions below.

After each step, check the function of the remote control.

Check your TV

Make sure the buttons on your TV work. If this is the case, skip the steps below and troubleshoot the remote control instead. If the TV buttons don’t work, follow the instructions in this section.

Note: TV button locations may vary. Check the sides, back, front and top of your TV.

Check if the lamp (operation lamp/standby lamp) on the front or bottom of the TV is lit. Note: Depending on the model, the name, position and shape of the lamp vary. If the lamp is on or flashing red, continue to the next step.

If the lamp does not light, check the power supply or power cord to make sure it is not unplugged or loose. If there is no problem with the connection, continue to the next step. Disconnect external devices (external USB hard drive, devices connected with HDMI cable, etc.) and cables from the ports on the TV to determine if a connected device is causing the problem. Do not unplug the TV’s power cord.

If connections are complicated, make a note of them and make sure you can reconnect everything before you start disconnecting devices or cables.

If a specific device is connected and the lamp blinks, there may be a problem with the connected device.

If the TV buttons still don’t operate the TV, the TV may need service. Go to Product Repair.

Check your remote control

After each step, check the function of the remote control.

Press each button on the remote twice to ensure no buttons are stuck. Reset the remote control. Open the battery compartment cover and remove the batteries. Press and hold the power button for three seconds. Put the batteries back in and close the battery compartment cover. Clean the battery terminals with a cotton ball or soft cloth dipped in some rubbing alcohol. Replace old or dead batteries with new ones. Be sure to insert the batteries with + and – in the correct position.

Do not use a new battery and a used battery or batteries of different brands together.

Do not use a battery. Perform a power reset. If the problems are caused by an external factor such as B. network service, data transmission or connected devices, they can be solved by restarting the power supply. For Android TV models, see How do I power reset my Android TV article.

For other TV models, see How do I power reset my LCD/LED or Projection TV article. For Android TVs released in 2015 or later, the symptoms may improve if the remote control software is updated. If the problem persists, other troubleshooting options are available based on your remote control type. Note: The steps vary depending on whether your remote control is infrared (IR) or wireless. Most TV remotes are IR remotes. If your remote does not have the IR character, refer to the wireless or touchpad remote instructions. If your TV remote suddenly stopped working, broke, or disappeared into the airwaves, you might be wondering if you can use a universal remote with your TV to replace it. The good news is yes, you can use a universal remote with any TV sold today.

To replace your TV’s remote control, you could purchase a device-specific remote control from your TV manufacturer, but this could prove expensive and is actually unnecessary. There are numerous third-party replacement parts available online for specific brands, and since manufacturers rarely change the infrared (IR) commands for their TVs, a remote designed for a specific manufacturer will almost certainly work on any of their TVs.

But the easiest option might be to buy one of the best universal remotes and as these are not brand specific they should be compatible with any of the best TVs from any manufacturer and as an added bonus they can control other devices too. These universal remote controls are available from most physical electronics retailers as well as online stores.

Whichever universal remote you choose, most use a set of unique code numbers to identify the various commands for the device you’re trying to control. Therefore, the extent of the initial setup will largely depend on how many devices you intend to use with your new remote and how easy it is to find each code.

Universal remotes usually come with a list of these code numbers, although you can find them online as well. Whichever approach you take, once you’ve found the specific code for your TV, simply enter it into the controller. If the controller is designed for more than one entertainment device, you can also add the codes to control things like a Blu-ray player, soundbar, or AV receiver.

Some of the more expensive universal remotes, like Logitech’s Harmony range, use an online database of devices, so all you have to do is connect the remote to a PC and download the IR commands for whatever devices you want to control. But if that sounds cool, you’ll need to buy a Harmony remote quickly, as Logitech no longer makes them and supplies are limited.

If you’re thinking about buying a universal remote, be sure to consider the size and shape of the zapper itself, because you want something that’s comfortable to hold and easy to use. Also think about the size of the keys, their placement and whether they are self-illuminating, as the latter can be very useful in the dark.

In fact, you might even consider a new universal remote an upgrade compared to the lost or broken TV wand – they might have a better layout, for example. However, there’s one manufacturer where a universal remote might feel like a downgrade, and that’s LG.
